2010 Net54 NCAA Tournament bracket contest

2 Attachment(s)
You can enter the annual Net54 NCAA Tournament bracket contest here:

http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/en/group?groupID=12092

The name of our group on ESPN.com is: Net54

The password is: cardboard

ESPN.com's groups allow you to create more than one entry, but for this contest, one entry per person, please. (If you don't already have an EPSN.com account, you'll need to create one before you can join the NET54 tournament group. This is a pretty painless procedure and takes little time at all.)

There is no money involved in this pool, though the top three finishers will receive prizes.

First place: The winner gets custody of the Hal Chase "traveling trophy," pictured below and currently held by 2009 contest winner Rhett Yeakley. Winner agrees to take good care of the card for a year, promises to not try to sell it on eBay or the B/S/T and vows to mail it to next year's winner.

First-place winnner also gets his choice of one of the three other cards pictured below: 1921 Exhibits Steve O'Neil, 1928 Yuengling's George Uhle or 1933 DeLong Lon Warneke.

Second place: Choice of one of the two remaining cards

Third place: The remaining card

(Only the Chase card needs to be passed on in 2011.)

You can create your entry at any time and make your picks shortly after the pairings/brackets are announced tonight. Changes can be made to your picks until the tournament starts.

If you have any trouble registering/entering or have any questions, feel free to e-mail or PM me.

Good luck!

Thanks, Rob!

Thanks, Rob, for putting the bracket together. The prizes are a classy gesture. I suppose I should also put in a shameless plug for MSU. Go Green!:D

Thanks for coordinating; all signed up!

Jacklitsch 03-14-2010 12:07 PM

I'll ask again, as I did in the first thread, may we have up to three entries? I know one can but may we?

T206DK 03-14-2010 01:02 PM

It looks like some people have created 4-5 entries. Is that being allowed

Steve,

I wasn't ignoring your question in the other thread; I just never saw it. Sorry about that.

I see that someone has indeed created five entries. When I set up the group, I read that the most entries one can have is three. There was no way to change that setting, so I figured we'd allow it. If you could limit the number of entries, I think most people would agree that one per person is the way to go. But we can't. The fact someone has created five is bothersome, but I'm not sure what we can do about that.

Suggestions welcome.

rhettyeakley 03-14-2010 02:10 PM

I've never been a big fan of multiple entries for the same person in these types of pools.

It doesn't look like anyone else has really done more than one entry so maybe we could just say only one entry to be filled out per person?

The extra entries can just sit there with no selections being made and would therefore be irrelevent (I would contact the guy so he is on board with that idea though).

That sounds like a good plan, Rhett. I'll update the rules above and notify anyone who appears to have more than one entry.

So just to be clear: One entry per person.

Thanks, Rob

Jacklitsch 03-14-2010 02:47 PM

Each entry has a number assigned. Just make entry number 1 the official entry. The others are for fun.

Only one pick per person is the perfect way to go. Make a decision and stick to it! Better watch out :) I called the last 14 vs. 3 upset in the tournament and I guarantee at least 1 or 2 will take place this go around :) University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff: 2010 National Champs.

One entry person is the way we're doing it (Post No. 9).

Not really an issue, anyway, because it doesn't appear there are any multiple entries currently in the pool.

Good luck.

magic1313 03-14-2010 05:37 PM

I was the one with multiple entries as I didn't know the limit. I have removed all but one entry. Sorry folks.

No problem at all.

Very generous of Rob to offer those three cards. Classy gesture.

Forgive the bump. Just want to make sure anyone who's interested knows about the Net54 NCAA Tournament pool.

Also, please forgive the "harassing" quote by ... Gandhi.

Don't let it chase you away.

barrysloate 03-16-2010 08:20 AM

Quick question for the NCAA trivia buffs: when was the last time the Tarheels missed the tournament? Thank you.

ChiefBenderForever 03-16-2010 09:03 AM

Great question Barry ! Without cheating I would guess 1977 but probably way off.

So you find "Don't miss the boat, be sure to quote." harassing?

What a world you must live in, Frank.

Good luck with your bracket.

Early in the start of this decade - 2001 maybe? They were under .500 one year, when Matt Doherty was coaching there...

tbob 03-16-2010 11:27 AM

I think Chris is right, it hasn't been that long ago. Now Arizona didn't make it for the first time in 25 years. I think I read where the last time UCLA, UNC and UConn all failed to make the tourney was 1966.

Thanks guys. I didn't realize NC missed it as recently as 2001. It is strange to see North Carolina and Connecticut in the N.I.T., since each won the National Championship within the last several years.

Frank, if I thought it was offensive, I never would have used it as a signature line in the first place. Somehow, you find it offensive -- and harassing. Quite frankly (pun intended), I think that's an issue that's yours. The fact we're even discussing it borders on comical. (Be thankful no one finds your Stengel avatar offensive or you'd have to swap it for a photo of a different ball card.)

And please spare me the "peace" reference. You and I both know how hypocritical you're being with that mention.

As I posted before, good luck with your bracket and the NCAA Tournament pool, which is why this thread was started. I've about reached the end addressing what you find to be harassing.

Supposedly, so it's been told, Festus Wakefield of Dogbite, Kentucky and Clem DeWolf of Buttwipe, Ohio got into a tavern scrap one day back in 1812. Clem owned that he liked a good slab of moose meat with his ale and Festus replied that across the river in Kaintuck real men ate their moose raw and picked their teeth with the antlers. When the dust cleared Festus had only one ear and Clem was minus an eyeball. They've been at it ever since. Peace out, guys. This shit is getting tiresome.

Um, I'm new to this forum, so I've just kind of hung back and laughed at the hysterical ravings of you Frank. But now its getting really old.

You don't like it that Rob is an enthusiastic fan of graded cards, it drives you nuts that Rob is sarcastic, and now you find "offensive" the closing lines of his signature. Seriously, it makes me laugh to write this out.

The fact is, I'm not sarcastic, I like both raw and graded cards, and I don't like closing lines either. Any closing lines, they all get old if you ask me. But I'm not getting "offended" about it and hijacking threads in some sort of stupid campaign to end them. I hope I don't get on your bad list, because I'm sure I'll end up saying something stupid, wrongheaded, uncool, or sarcastic at some point too....

The fact is, we all think things are annoying to us, but you got to live with it man! That is part of what makes a forum interesting, all sorts of people with ideas that we often totally disagree with. I mean you got to stand up and denounce racism or someone attacking someone else's religion or something seriously heinous, but this isn't remotely the case here.

So please chill out!

"People,I just want to say,you know,can we all get along?"-Rodney King,1992 L.A. Riots........:D

Just messin' around.............On another note-I don't know crap about college basketball, but I'd love to win one of those cards.I picked up a Division 1 Men's Championship Tournament sheet from a casino, and it has the teams shown, with a breakdown chart of how the winner of the first round goes to the second round, winner of that game goes to the regionals,so on and so on.

Dumb question-next to the team names are numbers-example:
1 Kansas
16 Lehigh

8 UNLV
9 Northern Iowa

Can someone tell me what the #'s mean?
I sure would appreciate it.

Thanks,Clayton

FrankWakefield 03-16-2010 04:38 PM

Anthony S. 03-16-2010 04:39 PM

Clayton,

The numbers next to the school names are their "seeds" in the particular region in which they're competing. Kansas is the top seed in the Midwest so they're the "1" seed. Lehigh is the bottom seed in the Midwest Region, thus they're the "16" seed, and Kansas will likely use them to floss their teeth.

Four Regions, so four #1 seeds, four #2 seeds, etc.

p.s. Cal will likely go out like a mafia hit in the first round. And I will sob.

Section103 03-16-2010 04:41 PM

Clayton,

The teams are seeded much like a tennis tournament. #1 indicates the highest seed (best) within that quarter-region. #16 indicates the worst. No #16 has ever beaten a #1 in tournament history (back in the 80's, they didnt have that many teams). If you went straight #1s (chalk), that would be your "most likely scenario", but it also doesnt happen very often, as upsets win out here and there.

teetwoohsix 03-16-2010 04:42 PM

Thanks Anthony, now it all makes sense!!Good luck in the contest, now I can sign up myself.
Sincerely,Clayton

Edit to add a thanks to you also Rich, just read your post :D

barrysloate 03-16-2010 04:52 PM

On a mathematical note: all the pairs of seeds in the first round add up to 17 (1 vs 16, 5 vs. 12, 8 vs. 9, etc.)

If there are no upsets all the pairs in the second round will add up to 9 (1 vs 8, 4 vs. 5, etc.) If you see a pair in the second round with a total greater than 9, that means one of the lower seeds upset a higher seed in the first round.

If pairs in the third round add up to 5, there were no upsets. If in the fourth round they add up to 3 (1 vs.2), there were no upsets.

After the final four it's every man for himself.

I'm ok with grading cards, and folks liking them. I do get troubled when collectors think that slabbed is the ONLY way to go. There's a distinction. A significant one. I was ok with great finds ending with grading, so long as it wasn't that it couldn't be a great find unless it ended with grading.

And this isn't about slabbed or raw cards.

It is about the constant shots. If it is over, then he quits with the repetitive jabs, the boat/quote. He's run off several folks. I'm not going.

I'm not an idiot... I add to the forum. I identified the Quality Photo Shop pictures of the Cincinnati Reds, no one else here offered that. Rob's not an idiot. I don't put a slam in on him on every one of my posts. It's time for him to stop. The folks he chased away can't chime in with support, they're long gone, to the detriment of the board.

Frank, you definitely add to the forum, and in my opinion, so does Rob. I'm too new to know the history of it all, all I'm saying is that it seems to me that you have to pick your battles, and that this is one thing that you should let slide...

I got the Huskies going to the Sweet 16 !

Disclosure: I am a Washington alum.

ChiefBenderForever 03-16-2010 06:06 PM

I guess I missed the boat. Go Tarheels !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cliftons8 03-16-2010 08:30 PM

I am also one of those who had multiple entries, however I only signed in for one on Rob's tourny. My son and I filled out a couple of brackets last night, and those have been brought over to Rob's site. How can I undo this? Also, if I fill out more brackets on ESPN will they automatically show up in Rob's pool?

Thanks,
Mike

I am trying to delete my entries with no luck. Can someone offer help?

You can move your other entries to any other group very easy, just chick on the one you want to move and right under your avitar/name there is a bar that has Create Join. Just join something else. PM me if you need anything on this

GrayGhost 03-17-2010 09:42 AM

I just entered. I want to win!!! it has my name twice, but only one sheet was filled out as you can see by looking.

I'll take the traveling trophy, or any other prize. My college BB knowledge is limited at best, but maybe I'll get lucky..haha.

cliftons8 03-17-2010 07:07 PM

John,
Thanks for you help. I think I got it fixed

Mike

Rob D. 03-18-2010 05:53 AM

Final bump as a reminder you have a few hours later to create an entry (and if you previously created an entry, to fill out your bracket).

I seem to recall, I could be wrong, but last year the Final Four was made up of all four #1 seeds.
