1949 Indians team issued photos: real or not?

Posted By: Chris Counts
I recently picked up a couple '49 Indians photos (Doby and Lemon). I've never owned one, but their stock is very thin and the paper seems too bright white for something nearly 60 years old. Also, it is my understanding that they came on a relatively thick stock. Has this set been faked? Does it come on different stocks? Any information anyone can offer is appreciated ...

Posted By: leon
I am not sure why but I have a full set of these in their original envelope. I have the '50 issue also. They are on heavy paper stock. It wouldn't surprise me if they look real nice as the ones I have are in almost mint condition. I am not sure about fakes but I think full sets can be picked up for under $200 so not sure of the ROI on it.....I am unaware, though there could be, authorized reprint type sets....regards

btw, the paper stock of mine is creamy colored....very nice, showing the aging....

Posted By: Rob D.
Hi Chris,

These did not come on thick stock. Very thin. And it's not uncommon to find them in "ultra high grade" (sorry) -- primarily because they were issued in envelopes and are often found in very clean condition. As Leon mentioned, they're typically a cream color, but there are some sets from the early to mid 1950s that are more white.

There was a set (1948) reprinted in the early 1990s, but they are smaller than the original 6 x 9 size.

If you can post a scan, I think it would be pretty easy to tell.

These sell for just a few dollars each usually, so I don't see a huge upside for reprinting them.

Hope this helps.

Rob
