Rick Monday saving the American Flag hand drawn baseball

I’m a sucker for George Sosnak, but I decided to branch out. I had an autographed Rick Monday ball with the caption “God Bless America”. I know this artist named Jose Ceja, he is The Baseball Artist on Instagram. I commissioned him to depict the moment Monday stole the flag from the two flag burners at Dodger Stadium back in 1976. Here are the amazing results.

If you want to contact him I’ll post a photo of his business card as well

Cool ball...

I remember watching that game. Sadly, I don't know if that incident would play out the same in today's game.

I sure hope so, but it's a much different world these days. :o

Great job by the artist. I was out of Country when this happened and it was years later before I even heard of it. I have to believe there might be a player or two (can't thing of any off hand) that would do the same today.

I would hope that several players would rush the field to stop something like that today. David Ortiz would have in his day, Barry Bonds would not.

LeBron would run out there like a man possessed to save it if he saw that the flag was about to be burned... the Chinese flag that is.

A month after the incident, the Cubs had a "Rick Monday Day" back home at Wrigley.

From the Net: The next month, the Dodgers presented Monday with the flag he saved during “Rick Monday Day” on May 4, 1976. Monday says he still has that flag in his collection of baseball memorabilia.

Here's a button from that day...

Wow, Andy...

That's gotta be a rare one. Never seen one of those until now.

Great piece!

Thanks Mark,

I got lucky on a BIN. I really don't go for too many post 60's buttons but figured I had to make an exception for this one considering the reason for the honor. If you want a great article that is a pretty long read, here's a link:

https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/3...dodger-stadium

In addition to Monday, it also dives into the tragic lives of both the protester and the photographer who snapped the classic photo...

Wow, great article... I learned a lot. Seems impossible that was 44 years ago.

Thanks for posting it, Andy!
