52 Topps Front Color Variations

Sorting through my 52T set and ran across a color variation on the Ray Boone. One green front and the other olive, both black backs. I was oblivious to this variation and the few other front color variations within the set. I recently bought a large 52 lot and have been comparing/upgrading as I go.

I’m sure most are already aware of this variation, but figured I’d post just in case others were not aware.

There is a thread about all sorts of 1952 Topps variations including Boone, Crandall and Feller color variations.

Its a serious rabbit hole!

Border breaks, gray backs, etc etc

Part of the fun

Huggins and Scott Super set checklist from a few years back. Many are recurrung print defects, and there have been additional discoveries since it sold

Sorry to go OT, but that is one heck of a set....I felt like it's hammer price was a bargain 7 years ago when it sold. I wonder what this same set would bring in today's market? Two to three times what it sold for 7 years ago?

ALR-bishop 09-14-2020 11:00 AM

It lists 4 versions of the Boone, two different for both red and black backs

Here is an old thread. It mentions two other possible color background variants....Feller and Crandal. I have seen and have Feller cards where the horizontal front "slats" are clear or greatly faded. I have yet to see an orange Crandall, even theough it has been listed or rumoured in several publications, including the Gilkeson variations compendium, and in the H&S Super set. Anyone have one they can post...orange, not faded red

Thanks for the references to info guys! And wow, that master set referenced is amazing!

I knew about these, but still have never seen a orange Crandall. I have seen lighter or darker red but the difference is negligible. I have a Feller with faint slats or clear ones, but have never seen one in hand where the slats are not at least slightly present

Yeah fuzzy vs distinct slats would be correct. Any other color variations beyond the ones I posted?

I recently just discovered this variation as well and have been looking for a decent copy ever since.
If you have one that you are looking to move, please PM me.

Thanks. :)

Dave -- the Super set does list a lot of other variants most of which are easy to run down. They are recurring print defects for the most part. Some are background color variants, including

26 Irvin B brown/tan
54 Kiely B orange/beige
200 Houk white/pink
225 Baumholtz brown/tan

I have been able to run down the other print defects listed in the Super set checklist I posted above plus a few extras. Still short on the gray backs and doubt I will further pursue them

I am still undecided on what I'm doing with my main 52 set. But, if I do decide to part ways, I'll give you a crack at what I have. I'll be posting all my duplicates this weekend on here, which is roughly 210 low numbers. I'll try posting images of all, as they're currently in binder pages. Haven't checked through for these variations yet, so i may have more.

I just won this one the other night. Took a chance on the GAI grading, especially since it didn't read 1st graded, but I trusted the sellers comments, and it looked good to me.

Great find! Very nice presenting card!

Still debating whether to crack it when I receive it or leave it alone?

I'll likely have a month before I get it to decide but that scratch on the case bothers me, plus I'd like to measure it accurately by laying it on top/beside another 52.

HRBAKER 09-30-2020 12:27 AM

It's got a slight diamond cut to it.
I think that's a good sign in re to possible trimming.

From side to side, the angles seem to match and this cards borders still have a lot of meat to them. I’d guess it’s not trimmed.

My other variation is very similar as it is also diamond cut.

To me, this new card doesn't look like it has been trimmed, but with the tiniest amount the card doctor's seem to be able to remove, I'll never know until it is in hand freed from its case.

I agree, but I guess I am bias at this point. :)
