Re: 1928 Star Player Candy Cards

Posted By: David Smith
Hello,

I have 16 different 1928 Star Player Candy cards. All were bought at a paper show about 10 years ago. The 16 are; L A Blue, Guy Bush, Owen Carroll, Elwood English, Ira Flagstead, Sam Gray, Willie Kamm, Bob Meusel, Ed Morgan, Buddy Myer, William Regan, Wally Schang, Joe Sewell, Tris Speaker, Al Thomas and Harold Traynor.

I didn't know what they were and had to go to the car and check the big SCD price guide. The problem with that is, I think there was a Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig also but when I came back, those two cards were gone. Oh well, (SNIFF SNIFF) I have over 20% of the set and added a new player (Myer) to the checklist.

My question now is, how many players ARE in the set?? 72 was a nice number (printed sheets of 12 or 24) but my Myer card makes 73 cards in the set. 75 would be the next logical number but WHO might the two missing players be??

Posted By: Anonymous
David,

I appreciate the info. I would have e-mailed you privately, but I did not know your address. You must have the largest Star Player Candy collection going. I only have two from 1928 (Cochrane and Coffman) and Gehrig from 1929. Correct me if I am wrong, but I could of sworn there are football players also in the set. I have never seen any, but read it somewhere. Are you working the set? Any interest in trading?

Let me know

Will

Re: 1928 Star Player Candy Cards

Posted By: David Smith
Yes, I guess you could say I am working on the set. However, with very few cards showing up anywhere and my lack of funds right now, adding to the set is at a standstill.

Yes, the SCD big book says there are Star Player Candy football cards but I have never seen any. The dealer I bought my baseball cards from had a Shotwell's Candy Red Grange card and I also bought it. So, as far as SPC football cards, he either had already sold any he had or never had any to begin with.

Posted By: David Smith
Hello,

Thank you to everyone who (so far) has shared their pictures of their SPC cards.

Ok, the info I have on the cards origin (not much).

I bought the cards at a paper show about 10 years ago. The dealer said his father had collected them when he was a kid. The cards came from a Mid-Western state (I forget the actual city name-too bad) and so because of the rarity, I am assuming these are a regional issue. The dealer did not know (or I did not ask) how the cards were issued.

As I said earlier, I think there was a Ruth and Gehrig but they were gone by the time I returned to his table. The dealer did not have any football players and I have never seen any SPC football cards.

I will post a scan of all 16 cards I own shortly.

Thanks again for sharing and I hope I have added some knowledge to the hobby.

David

Posted By: David Smith
Jay, are you saying that you have over 60 different 1928 Star Player Candy cards and need only 6 commons to complete the set?? If so, where and how did you get all of them and do you have any uncatalogued cards??

I am still trying to figure out how many cards are in the set because 72 was a nice round number but then my Buddy Myers card made 73 and that doesn't seem right as far as a number goes for a complete set.

Re: 1928 Star Player Candy Cards

Posted By: Joe Tocco
There is an obscure 1928 football set I've always seen referred to as "Anonymous Candy." It's ridiculously rare... one of those sets that when you ask if they have any, dealers laugh. SGC has graded 15 different, all of which are in Carl Lamendola's incredible collection. PSA has graded none. Here's one of Carl's, stolen from his SGC registry:

Looks familiar, eh?

SGC has a checklist of 36 football players. I don't know what their source is for the checklist. Carl has been helpful to me in the past on vintage football sets; I can point him to this thread to see if he can shed more light, if y'all are interested.

Joe

Posted By: Carl Lamendola
Here is what I know about Star Player Candy Football, a.k.a, Anonymous Candy Football. I spilt the first lot from Mastro's auction with another collector.
Subsequently, searching on Ebay I found three more. It turns out he was a baker from the Midwest who consigned the orginal group to the Mastro auction along with numerous 1930's Goudey Baseball in NM/M condition. A few auctions ago, I ended up asking for a scans of the new group of football cards. I contacted my friend and told him there were some new ones, and he identified them as very similar to the 1928 Baseball Star Player Candy. That's where the SGC Checklist came from ...Hope that helps
