Is there ANY chance this T206 Matty Dark Cap gets a 2 from PSA?

If the chance is less than 50% then I'll likely just sell it raw. Note the rounded corners, some chipping on the right side and corner and the stain/residue down the back. No creasing and, in my opinion, a beautiful, unblemished picture.

Matty's name technically falls off the bottom edge a bit, so it should also get an MC qualifier. Take that into consideration, too.

I think a 2(MC) or a 1.5(MC) would be possible. What's actually interesting, is that according to PSA, a 1.5(MC) counts for more points in the Set Registry than a 2(MC). And since 1.5 Fair is a "full grade", it can get assigned a qualifier and they still intend to give out MCs and MKs while minimizing the others.

Quote:

Bonus Points and Deductions
Some sets may have bonus points assigned to certain items within a set.

Additionally, the following point deductions are taken for Qualifiers. For example, if your card or ticket is graded PSA 9Q, the grade calculation in the Registry will be 7.

9Q = -2
8Q = -2
7Q = -2
6Q = -2
5Q = -2
4Q = -2
3Q = -1
2Q = -1
1Q & 1.5Q = no deduction

Thanks both. I hadn't appreciated the MC possibility, but of course you're both right. A 1.5(MC) (despite the additional points...odd) doesn't quite seem worth it to me, and my guess is that is where it will land. If I end up going that route I'll certainly update this thread (what...six months from now?) with the outcome!

Another vote for probably 1.5 MC.

Though personally, I would catalog this as a 2 in my spreadsheet myself.

Why are you slabbing it? To sell?

No, I'd slab it to keep it, but only if it is PSA 2 or above. If it comes in below that I would sell it (so if the expectation is that I won't get a 2 then I'd likely just sell it raw).

Why let PSA dictate things? If you like the card you should keep it, IMO. And it would be fine ungraded.

I agree...perhaps if you decide to keep it raw, you just might eventually convert to the raw, dark side of the hobby. Nice looking card.

Here is my Matty that came with the first group of 5 prewar cards I acquired, and after all these years/decades he has still resisted hard plastic.

I could have posted this in the Favorite Card thread, but Matty decided he would have more impact here.

They used to say half grades can't have qualifiers. I haven't submitted in a while. Is a 1.5 with a qualifier new?

As for the card, the front looks like a 2 or 3 but the back damage may downgrade to a 1. Hard to say. If I submit, it's a 1 for sure though.

In my opinion that back stain/residue mark would keep it out of a 2 slab.

Great looking card regardless.

I agree with the 1.5 voters

A 1.5 is straight "Fair," and 2.5 on up are "plus" grades. A plus grade has to exceed the base grade, which means no qualifiers.

Correct, despite the .5, it's FAIR, not FAIR+.

Here's an example from 10 years ago.

Personal preference, I guess. It's not so much needing PSA to dictate things rather the end result (a slabbed card) physically fits into my collection, conforms to the rest of my collection, allows me to update my spreadsheet with the info, etc. The organizing, completing, tracking, upgrading is a big draw for me. I can understand how others could view that as detracting from collecting and enjoying cards, but for me it enhances it.

Then send it in and see what happens, if you must have a slab, you can always decide to sell it. I think it's relatively unlikely but not impossible you'll get your 2.

Luke 12-10-2022 08:09 PM

I would bet on 1.5 but I think 2 is possible. It's got great eye appeal regardless.

I see, well if that's always been the case I guess I just never noticed. Appreciate the info!
