Posted By: Hal Lewis
Am I a sucker for the hype...

or is this really "considered" a rare T206 back:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5158875572&ssPage Name=STRK:MEWN:IT

???

BUT FOR for the "factory designation"... this card would be one of THE MOST COMMON backs in the set.

The factory designation, however, is seen even LESS OFTEN than a "blank back" or a "Lenox."

!!!

So ... my question is ... do "factory designations" really COUNT??
Posted By: Hal Lewis
Andy:

Is it possible that this is only because a lot of people are not even LOOKING at the factory designation on their "common" Piedmont cards...

so more of these will show up if and when people go back and start looking through their cards??

Just curious.

Posted By: andy becker
...well hal, you know ANYTHING is possible .
it ain't happening, piedmont factory 42 was only issued in the weaning days of t206. available only in the 350-460 series. they are rare. if i were to venture a guess...maybe 250 to 1. regular peidmont vs factory 42.
Posted By: Lee Behrens
You see these backs on occasion on ebay without the owner knowling. I have not seen one for sale for a while and most of the time they are not a bargain any more. Beat up ones have been going ofr $80-$100. I personally have 2 SGC 50 and a really nice Schaeffer that is getting sent in for grading right now.

Lee

Posted By: JimB
I believe these are pretty scarce, but a rare factory number adds very little extra appeal to me personally. What is cool about the different backs to me is the artwork, so a miniscule factory 42 instead of factory 25 doesn't do much for me. Just one man's opinion.
Jim

Posted By: tbob
Other than with a handful of collectors, the backs may be rare but not have that great a premium. There may be 10-15 collectors who fight amongst each other for them but the rest of the tobacco card collecting world could probably care less. For example, look at the T213 Coupon set. A common in exmt from that set should be selling, based on rarity for 20x the price of a T206 with the same front, but it doesn't.
A Baltimore News card should sell for 30x the price of an E94 with the same front, but they don't.
As long as the demand exists for the 42 backs, you'll always have a small group who will drive up the value but to most tobacco card collectors, they could care less.
That being said, it is still a great card, congrats on the pickup, Hal.

Posted By: JimB
I agree with TBob, that it will probably always have appeal among a certain group of back collectors and that it is with a Cobb front adds quite a bit. I think it would be a cool addition to a collection of Cobbs with a variety of backs. Since Hal already has the rarest of all (Ty Cobb back), he is well on his way to an interesting collection of T206 Cobbs.
JimB

Posted By: Hal Lewis
Sweet!

Hey Brian -- You wanna trade? I've already got a Red Cobb (as you know)... so I would throw in some cash to make up for the 1 grade difference and be able to have a different Cobb card instead of two with the same front.

Just wondering. Hoping you need a Red one.

But then again ... you probably have 32 of them!

Posted By: john/z28jd
Dont feel bad Jim,i have 630 cards without a pied factory 42,but im looking into getting a Lajoie, batting one for a great price. The reason i never got one is simple.I dont like paying that much extra just for a factory number being different. The reason i might get the Lajoie is that the guy isnt charging anything extra for the back over a regular piedmont and he knows its tougher[he knew it before i told him too].I guess ill just have to live with 2 Lajoie batting poses

Posted By: Mark
Don't worry, there are other red Cobbs with factory 42 backs out there. A year or so ago, I bought one on ebay for around $425. The seller was unaware of the rare back. Just a few weeks later, I sold it on ebay, pushing the rare back to see what it would bring. It went for right at $625. That doesn't mean, of course, that it would always bring that much of a premium. Mine wasn't as nice as the one on this thread, and it was ungraded. Over the last three or four years I have won three factory 42 backs on ebay, all sellers being unaware of the back variation. Even so, it is an extremely difficult back. It just doesn't stand out like a Drum back or a Uzit, and therefore people are less aware of it and less likely to notice when they see one. The other three were a portrait of Seymour, Chase with the blue background, and a very nice Jennings dancing for joy.

Posted By: john/z28jd
Hal anyone can but in if they want. The guy will be set up at fort washington in march and hes bringing the card.He doesnt sell anywhere else besides there,so if someone sees the Lajoie batting in vg+ with a fact 42 back for $160 before i get there, they can buy the card.

One warning tho,my rottweiler really wants the card so youll have to explain it to him after you bought it
