Need Help Identifying This Series

Any ideas?

They came in a lot of 1920's Strip Cards but they aren't like any strip cards I've ever seen as they are shorter, thicker and wider than most strip issues. Blank backs, but one does display an ink transfer on back.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Nice to see, I don't recall seeing a Corbett before. A McGovern (yours looks like a blue tint and this one looks black and white) and a Fitzsimmons (yours looks b/w, this one looks blue) were on eBay a few years ago. As I recall, none of us knew what they were. I did not bid and do not own these, just showing them from the archive.

I wasn't clear they were cards, rather than cuts or something, but as you describe them as thicker than strip cards that seems to settle that issue. I have never handled one.

So, I don't know, but there's a little bit of the history at least on whatever these are. I'd love to know more out of curiosity.

EDIT: I would also note that at the time I did not think their style indicated period production to the fighters careers. Found with 1920's strip cards fits a lot better. No solid proof, but these don't look like C. 1900 items to me.

Thanks,

Looks like they are scarce then but no designation as to what they are. They do appear hand cut.

I'm in agreement that they don't seem like period to the fighters turn of the century careers.

I think anonymous strip cards that came in multiple tints (3 or 4?). I don't thnk an intact strip has surfaced.

I have been trying to run them down for years. Or, rather the McGovern and Fitzsimmons. They are in the most recent edition of my book (America's Great Boxing Cards) at p. 144. The examples I have seen appear to be machine cut and the one I got to examine in person under a microscope was photo-engraved. I've never seen the Corbett before. My guess is pre-1910 which would be consistent with the fighters and the printing technique. They are a very fortunate acquisition: you might go 20 years without finding even a single card. Getting three, that's a find.
