Best 4-Some of Players in a World Series

Can any come up with some good ones?

1926
Ruth, Gehrig, Hornsby, Alexander

1951
DiMaggio, Mantle, Berra, Mays

More Modern Day 1976
Bench, Morgan, Rose, Munson

I'm gonna say one of these 3 are the best, but that's just off the top of my head.

"a lil' help?"

Aquarian Sports Cards 12-01-2020 06:58 PM

1969 Robinson, Robinson, Palmer, Seaver

1966 Robinson, Robinson, Palmer, Koufax, Drysdale who are you leaving off?

1970 Robinson, Robinson, Palmer, Bench, Rose and leaving off HOF'er Perez you can choose the other one who doesn't make the cut.

1971 (seeing a theme yet?) Robinson, Robinson, Palmer and Clemente (leaving off Maz and Stargell)

1975 (beats 1976 easily) Bench, Rose, Morgan, Fisk, Yaz all ahead of Munson and you still have to cut one.

1980 Schmidt, Carlton, Rose, Brett

1996 Boggs, Jeter, Rivera, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Jones, pick 4! and that's leaving off some of the best players not in the Hall McGriff, Cone, Pettite. Sick star power that year.

rats60 12-01-2020 07:48 PM

1909 Wagner, Cobb, Crawford, Clarke

1915 Ruth, Speaker, Alexander, Hooper

1936-37 Gehrig, DiMaggio, Ott, Hubbell

1942 Musial, DiMaggio, Dickey, Slaughter

1946 Williams, Musial, Doerr, Skaughter

clydepepper 12-01-2020 07:57 PM

How about 1929 with:

Cochrane
Foxx
Grove
Hornsby

Also Hartnett and Simmons

cammb 12-02-2020 12:29 PM

In 2003 ESPN voted this the greatest world series and I agree.

1991 World Series.

Puckett
Morris
Smoltz
Twins Infield

'91 was one of the best ever for sure, the only one negative I have with that is it was played in a Dome.

Trivia - 40 times has a WS gone 7 games.

So I think there are 40 to choose from to determine the best. 'Cuz to be the best it has to go 7. And winning in the bottom of the 9th or extra would probably also be a requirement of best ever so that would whittle those 40 down to a handful.

1924, 1960, 1991, 1997 and 2001 all ended with a walk off hit in game 7. 1960 was the only one with a walk off home run.

1960 had the best game 7 of the 5 with a back and forth 10-9 win for the Pirates. For the overall World Series it would have to be 2001. In game 4 the Yankees scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th to tie and won in extras. In game 5 the Yankees again scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th to tie and won in extras. In game 7 the Dbacks scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th off Mariano Rivera to win the World Series.

I'll see that pitching heavy suggestion and raise you to the 2001 World Series: Clemens, Big Unit, Schilling and Rivera. No room for Jeter, Mussina, etc.

AGuinness 12-02-2020 02:56 PM

2004 Red Sox have a pretty good foursome all by themselves in Big Papi, Schilling, Pedro and Manny. Although at least one wouldn't make the cut for this exercise because of that guy named Albert... Cardinals also had Rolen, Larry Walker and Yadi on that team.

That's the year that Rivera blew the save and was credited with a loss in game 7, right?

Just want to make sure I'm thinking about the same year.

1981 Dodgers!

Fernando Valenzuela, Steve Garvey, Dusty Baker, Davey Lopes

Maybe not the best ever, but good enough to beat the Yankees. And in my book that's good enough.

Aquarian Sports Cards 12-02-2020 06:44 PM

Team was loaded with Hall of Very Good type guys and you left off the best players Ron Cey and Reggie Smith, by WAR had the best career of all of those guys!

Mark 12-02-2020 06:48 PM

Moe started us out with some good ones. The 1926 and 1951 series were loaded with big WAR players. The 1929 series is a great suggestion, as are the 1909, 1915, 1937, 1975, and 1996 series. In my opinion, if the 1928 Athletics had made it to the series, they and the 28 Cards would be the best, hands down: Cobb, Speaker, Eddie Collins, Alexander, Grove, Simmons, etc.

chas 12-02-2020 06:48 PM

1934-35 Tigers

Gehringer
Greenberg
Cochrane
Goslin

Yes! The broken bat! And three years before he walked Millar, let Dave Roberts steal second and gave up a hit through his legs by Bill Mueller to start the greatest comeback on sports history! Good times :)

AGuinness 12-02-2020 06:54 PM

Speaking of the Red Sox, 1946 could include Teddy, Doerr, Musial and Slaughter, while the 1967 classic featured Brock, Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton and Yaz.

Yes, ended a possible 4 championships in a row. That was when I devoted myself to rooting against the Evil Empire.

I forgot about the pitching in that one. Definitely no room for position players that year.

On the other end, the 2008 World Series between the Phillies and Rays features no foreseeable HOF members of either team.

The downturn of Ryan Howard was drastic.

Pujols would bump Schilling from that list. Although his sock could stay.

You could put Nolan Ryan there as well.
