1986 Topps Roger Clemens Blue Streak Error

Just bought one of these beauties. I had been looking for one for a long time.
Any body else have one? I only know of one other person with one.

Blue Streak

Yes, I do. Also have the 86 Seaver with the same defect. Will post both later. I have seen both on eBay from time to time

Awesome Al, I have never seen the Seaver. Do you remember what the Clemens errors sold for? I paid $20 for the one I got.

ALR-bishop 09-17-2013 08:00 PM

Seaver

I got them a long time ago, but did not pay much for either

Nice pick up Ben

So I'm guessing that on the uncut sheets for '86 that Seaver was upside down directly above Clemens and that this is an "error" similar to the '90 Topps Frank Thomas NNOF error.

ALR-bishop 09-19-2013 06:02 PM

Blue streak

Good point Chris. We need someone with an uncut sheet

There is six card uncut Topps 1986 panel on ebid and the Clemons and Seaver are together upside down

Great find. Looks like there should be some Terry Puhl cards with some blue on the upper left side. Now I need to add that to my list.:D

4reals 09-25-2013 07:00 PM

Great job investigating guys! Very interesting! I wonder who will be the first to find a Terry Puhl variation and post it on this thread. I would imagine there are lots of guys with a ton of '86 common boxes to go through!

Easterly Variation?

Sorry to jump on an old thread but I found these cards when going through some 1986 topps vending box. Is this another 1986 Variation? The Easterly "Blue dot"?

There was another thread very recently where a guy had an uncut sheet. I wonder if this card was near to the others?
Ben probably knows.

Different sheets, the Easterly is on the top row of the B sheet and the Clemens/Seaver/Puhl are on the D sheet.

steve B 11-16-2019 12:32 PM

The Winfield is from a solvent drip, still really cool, as they don't show up like that very often.

Easterly is a large fisheye, and a persistent one at that. They can last a while or a long time, all depending on what the bit of debris causing it is and if it moves or comes off entirely. This one is big enough that looking at the "dot" in the center might give a clue about what it was.

Cliff Bowman 11-16-2019 12:33 PM

Al, can you take a scan of your Clemens, Seaver, and Puhl pieced together to show the complete print flaw puzzle put together? I can’t because of that pesky Puhl .

ALR-bishop 11-16-2019 02:39 PM

Cliff— will try to get that scan up tomorrow

Steve— the Winfield has more than one issue

PSA has apparently begun to recognize the 1986 Topps Roger Clemens Blue Streak. I think it's inconsistent but I guess it goes along with recognizing well known hobby accepted print flaws like the 57 Baker, 58 Herrera, 61 Fairly, 67 Spiezio, 80 Pryor, and 90 Thomas, but not recognizing similar print flaws on lesser known cards.

Awesome card.:D

They have graded a few of them correctly over the years. I sent mine in through Bobby a couple years ago and instead of grading it a blue streak like they had done for others mine came back as a PSA 8(PD).:( Been thinklng of trying to Please Submit Again hoping to get it labeled correctly.

Looks like PSA has graded 14 of them correctly and if mine was labeled properly it would be the highest graded example.

swarmee 03-24-2021 08:49 PM

If PSA was recognizing the variation prior to the group submission, you can have it corrected on the label as a mechanical error on PSA's dime. And if you point out to them that the print variation is what likely caused the PD, they may remove the qualifier, leaving it the 8 you desire with no out of pocket costs.

Really want to know who got me on the blue streak lot last week. I really wanted that Puhl and thought I was fairly strong but only strong enough for being the underbidder.

If I was to win this I would have been at 4 Clemens and 3 Seavers, but at the more important 1 Puhl. Damn that card is hard.

ALR-bishop 03-25-2021 07:04 PM

Anyone know what my Winfield posted above connects to top and bottom ?

From memory I know it's an A's outfielder but I can't remember if it's Mike Davis or Dwayne Murphy, they are both C* sheet cards along with the Winfield. I never did see the print flaw version of whichever one it is. ETA, it's Dwayne Murphy, I found my scan. It looks the player above Winfield is a Ranger.

I never noticed that lot, I also look for the Puhl card off and on. I have the graded Clemens posted a few threads up and one showing in the center of a rack pack. Don't have the Seaver, figured I would pick one of them up when/if I ever get that darn Puhl.

ALR-bishop 03-25-2021 08:21 PM

I saw the blue error lot but thought maybe the buyer was after all those 1986 guaranteed PSA 10 commons 😊

Gee thanks. Now you guys got me needing to go through monster boxes looking for those............I guess when I retire in 2 years I will have something to do.

I had this one in my watch list for months till some late night G&Ts convinced to finally get it because it would go with the blue streaks to show the underlying blue print clearly, lol.

Cool card, I picked up a Clemens with the black ink offset upward so you can see the blue under it for the same reason.

LOL, I have one in the BST section here for half that.

I can't say too much. I though mine was a one of a kind till I seen theirs for sale right after I posted mine for sale.:o

The one good thing about the high prices is it has brought out some really awesome very rare stuff.

This may already be known by some like the 86 Clemens but I wasn't aware of it, PSA also recognizes the 86 Seaver Blue Streak and the 86 Puhl Blue Streak. A eBay seller currently has all three listed at hefty prices.

Thanks for the update I never noticed these 2 listed.

I almost was to open my rack pack to see if it has the Puhl.

ALR-bishop 04-01-2021 06:53 AM

The Puhl was the hardest to find for me and Seaver was first and seamed easiest. Should they all not exist in equal numbers ? Do they show up on the PSA master checklist for 1986 ?

I like them but they are just scarce recurring print defects. Wonder who got them recognized. Is there anyplace but the Registry lists for a variant now to get widespread hobby recognition ? To me it is another example of the chaotic recognition process for variants post Bob Lemke in his role of editor of The Standard Catalog

I’m guessing that most 86 Topps Roger Clemens and Tom Seaver Cards were saved over the last thirty five years but many, many 86 Topps commons have been tossed since eBay effectively destroyed nearly all brick and mortar stores. It takes a lot of space to store hundreds of thousands or more of commons.

I done this a couple years ago to reduce the space I needed. Filled that 55 gallon barrel twice that day.:)

There were probably 6 Blue Puhls in that trash can

No, I went through every card. Sadly I did throw some Donruss Aqueous cards in there.:( After going though thousands of Donruss I realized I had somehow picked up a pile I shouldn't have. I said F it and didn't go back through them to find the Aqueous cards. They were commons and I still had a few more.

richtree 10-06-2021 03:01 PM

I am looking to buy these if anyone has raw.....It seems like all the error/variations have been harder to find the last few months out there .

Only time any hit ebay the prices have been crazy high

thanks for anyone in advance e

ALR-bishop 10-07-2021 07:31 AM

Now that PSA has recognized the Puhl, Clemens and Seaver I assume masters set collectors and well as player collectors for Clemens and Seaver’s will “need” all 3. And since Cliff and Ben have been tossing and burning the Puhl cards :), he may be really scarce. I would think bargain prices for these will be a matter of luck at this point.

Now if I could just get some love for my Winfield :(

Your Winfield is an awesome printing error, just not Roger Clemens cool.:)

I still look for the Puhl on occasion.

The 85 Fleer Clemens variant is still cheap :)

Bringing this back to life a little...with a twist. Has anyone else ever come across a Billy Sample "blue circle" variation? I was flipping through some 86' Topps and this is the first time I've seen or found this one. I've found the Clemens before but Billy Sample?!?

This is just a fish eye. Fairly common in junk era Topps products. However, we now know that beneath the top black border ink is a light blue underbase. This is unlikely to be related to the Clemens printing.
