Raw T206 Storage

Just wondering how people store ungraded T206 cards? The plastic sleeves don't seem like enough protection for some of the more valuable cards- are there generic PSA-like holders that can be purchased, or just cheaper/simpler to have them graded?

Runscott 09-12-2012 02:22 PM

unless you leave them lying on your coffee table, sitting by a glass of wine, I think you are safe with the plastic sleeves within a tobacco top loader. That's how I do it.

I mention the glass of wine because I have trashed a few documents due to that type of error.

wazoo 09-12-2012 02:24 PM

Card Savers do a really nice job keeping your card in place, so it does not damage the corners. Also, if you ever plan on sending the cards to get graded, I recommend using the Card Savers. They prevent your card from getting damaged in the mail.

I use a sleeve inside a regular toploader. Plus a handful in T card snaptite holders, and a couple in really old hard holders, the folded lexan type.

I don't use cardsavers mostly because they won't fit in the shoebox boxes.

And the 4 row boxes won't hold the toploaders anymore.

Why not store them in high quality mylar 15-pocket sheets, arranged in hard bound albums.

I do the same and it's great to view them together. Actually, I keep all of them in the sheets to include higher end cards. A 1" d-ring binder hold a lot of cards and fits nicely in the safe.

JollyRoger 09-12-2012 04:33 PM

I recently picked up some one-screw holders made specifically for t-cards. They cost me about 80¢ a piece, but they display nicely and provide the same protection as a graded case, the corners can't get dinged.

That is how I do it to. It is great to flip through and look at them in a notebook.

I made a mat in photoshop and had 500 produced and cut. The full set fits neatly in a couple small boxes.

Glad I asked- so many creative solutions... will watch the wine!

Mine are stacked in a small box. About 3 dozen are together in one plastic sleeve, about 50 HOFers are in another sleeve, the rest are stacked in there loose.

Actually, the 15 pocket sheets for a ring binder are a good way to go.

Nice image Ted! Thats how I do it too for T's, some E's, N172s, Goudeys, and Topps/Bowmans. Some of the early E's are tough though cuz of their wider size, so I need to order some 12 pocket sheets (3 rows x 4 columns) just haven't gotten around to it.

just put them in a bible.

i love the idea of keeping raw cards in sheets...in a binder...as this is how I did it as a kid! But...those t card sheets like ted has...I have found difficult to remove and place the cards as to avoid bending/dinging them at times...has anyone else found this?

Yes. That's how the E90-1 Summers I posted in the E90 thread got it's crease. :( And I'd bet that many of the otherwise nice T206s I have that are creased starting at the top center are also sheet victims.

Very cool idea.

Bill B - is that you? If so, I thought I had your email, but did not. Please re-send. Thanks.

not sure why...but when I read the title of this thread...it reminds me of a scene from pulp fiction!:D

Thats how I store my T205, T206 and T207 sets.

t206blogcom 09-13-2012 08:37 AM

T206s:
My raw T206s are in the tobacco size sleeves inside of the tobacco size toploaders. I store them along with my graded T206s in several boxes large enough for SGC slabs. All of my T206s are in alphabetical order with cards indicating "A", "B", "C", etc.

Non T206s:
HOFers are in alphabetical order in either graded slabs or the Ultra Pro sleeves. My stars/maybe one day HOFers are stored in the same manner, but different boxes.

W512 set:
All SGC graded, just stacked on the file cabinet until I can find or make a display case for them.

Autographs:
My small autographed card and ball collection are on display in my office.

I keep all of my raw cards inside penny card sleeves which are inside Ultra Pro toploaders. Always works well.....

What I like about that arrangement (if you're using the tobacco-size top loaders), is that they are so easy to store. Also, you can take them out easily and put your eyeball on the actual cardboard - for those of you who have never done this, it is really a joy :)

Rob, I have a bunch of odd-size pages at home. If I have any 12-pocket ones I would be happy to send them to you (free of charge of course). It may take me a day or two to dig them out, but I will let you know.

I use the bigger (3 x 4 ) holders because I like how easy I can take the cards out. In the smaller tobacco size ones they are more difficult to stick your fingers in. If I were to keep them in binders, which I don't, I would use the smaller tobacco size ones.

Just pop the top corner against a hard surface - it's slanted, so no way to damage the card. The end of the sleeve comes right out and you can grab it (as opposed to sticking your fingers in).

I am sure that would work but since I am not a set collector the 3 x 4 top loaders work for almost all size pre-war cards and I can keep them all in neat piles....I like uniformity in my mess :).

I enjoy the set in a box. My father-in-law has now sold about a dozen of these:

A few left BTW. :). PM me first...

To prevent damage to the card in a 15 pocket-page--

I also keep my collection in the 15 pocket pages. As has been said, it's great for organizing the collection and it's a pleasure to be able to flip through it anytime.

To protect my cards from damage when inserting and removing, I put the card in a halved penny-sleeve, which fits inside the pocket well without squeezing the card, and insert it with a flexible plastic 6" ruler--See scan--I use a utility knife to cut the sleeves in half. Inserting the card driven by the ruler inside the sleeve takes a little practice, but it's pretty easy, and removing the card is as easy as pulling out the plastic sleeve.

Graded cards I represent by either a photo-copy cut to size or a replica card.

Doug

bbcard1 09-13-2012 11:55 AM

The reason i did the inserts was so I could use standard toploads but not have the cards flopping around looking funny.

jimross 09-13-2012 10:36 PM

I stack my t206s tight with rubberband and left them in attic. Hoping they will show ghost overprint when I take them out next time. :)

Great thread. I have accumulated enough that I am definitely going to take a shot at the monster. I'll have the usual suspects graded and maybe a bunch of others, but plan to keep the remaining cards raw.

I have ~30 raw now, and have gone with 3x4 premium toploaders w/ penny sleeves. However, I just found a nice wood box sized to hold the T206 toploaders so i think I will do that...

1) does Ultra Pro make premium toploaders in the T206 size? in 3x4, the premiums are worth it IMO (clearer plastic), but I am not sure they make premium in the T206 size.

2) does Ultra pro make penny sleeves? cant seem to find them either. I like the 1/2 penny sleeve idea that someone posted above, but would prefer the smaller size.

any answers are appreciated!

G1911 05-13-2021 05:00 PM

At the risk of committing hobby heresy, I store most of mine, p-vg stuff, without any sleeves at all in a small cardboard box. They all have rounded corners already, and I like them the way they were meant to be. Nothing has been damaged yet after a few years of doing this with all my vintage.

If the card is particularly fragile, it gets a tobacco sized penny sleeve and top loader.

These are the ones I was referring to. I think you can find them cheaper if you look around.

I bought some of the individual mylar sleeves I saw mentioned in this thread:

https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=276726

I then put the sleeved cards in standard 9-pocket pages, since I'm super-paranoid about trying to get the cards into and out of 15-pocket pages (some of my cards are fairly rough and could fall apart if not handled very delicately). I've been very happy with this set-up.

Leon, I hope the re-post of this is acceptable. If not, my apologies.

Jgrace 05-19-2021 11:55 AM

One thing to add - I’ve found that the Ultra Pro tobacco top loaders are thinner and keep T206s from sliding around much better than BCW’s.

I store all my raw T206s in small tobacco sleeves and top loaders. Compact, easy to store and handle.

I use the mini soft sleeve and top loader then put them in the 9 pocket for easy viewing.

Ultra pro tobacco soft sleeve top loaded and a 9 pocket page is easy.
