2021 Collecting Goals

So with the new year beginning to get along, figured it would be great to check in with others on this: what are your goals for collecting this year? Is anyone coming close to finishing a PC? Want to round out a full back run?

Personally, I'm hoping to:
• Complete my T206 Providence Grays (Currently 2/8)
• Add a HOFer to my T206
• Pick up three spitballers
• Add one "achievable grail" back (Tolstoi, EPDG, American Beauty)

It's a bit ambitious for a grad student budget, but with patience and not being too picky about grade, I'm hopeful that I can achieve it.

Goals

Good post, Peanuts. Like the spitballer goal.

One of my goals is to get number grade slabs of the 59 Bazooka cards of Jim Brown and Hank Aaron. Always looking to add 1917 Standard Biscuit Hall of Famers.

commishbob 01-12-2021 07:22 PM

I'd like to finish my '67 Topps set. Under 40 to go, all 7th Series. The carew RC is the top dog on my list.

As for Pre-War...nothing specific. I do plan to make up my mind on whether to sell my raw Matty Dark Cap or not. It's a debate I've had with myself for a long time. We'll see.

Casey2296 01-12-2021 07:28 PM

Great goals Peanuts, best of luck in your endeavors.

riggs336 01-12-2021 09:10 PM

Like many of you I'm working on a lot of different sets. I don't know if I'll complete any of them in 2021, but here are five I'd really like to make some progress on:

• T207 Master (204/208)
• 1922 Exhibits (69/74)
• 1932 U.S. Caramel (28/31)
• R306 Butter Cream (18/30)
• 1939 Play Ball Sample Back (75/115)

Happy Collecting New Year everyone.

Cooper1927 01-12-2021 09:14 PM

I’m hoping to pick up one of the three HOF left needed for my E103 set. Wagner, Cobb, or Lajoie.

Another Lou Gehrig Wheaties back.

Or, add a Cobb B18 flannel, or photo, or something.

Or, another Tris Speaker piece.

Or, add another 1921 Exhibit Hall of Famer.

Or, another show piece of the Cincinnati Reds.

Or, I will buy smaller items, month by month, and irritate my wife.

This a good question. I've got quite a few goals for this year for both pre and post war. I think most are obtainable even if they are on a just out of undergrad budget.

For pre war my goals are

Pick up a pre 1900 card
Pick up a t202 Tinker, Evers, Chance
Start adding to my Richmond,VA pre war collection
Keep adding e96's

For post war my only 2 goals are

Keep adding to my 1950-60 Topps and Bowman run
Add some cards from non main stream sets (Redman, Red Heart, Berk Ross, Etc)

As well as pick up some playing days cards of Walter Johnson, Frank Chance, Joe DiMaggio, Clark Griffith and John McGraw

TigerMike 01-12-2021 09:53 PM

Great targets for everyone so far! I'm working on the T205 master. Always been my favorite.

kmac32 01-12-2021 09:58 PM

Continue to work on my E121 Yankees/Giants 1921 WS collection, my 1910 T210 Jacksonville Florida subset, find the final 3 cards of my T205 Cubs front/ reverse set, and collect different S74 Cubs silks

Kevin 01-13-2021 05:08 AM

Thanks for the thread, peanuts. In December I can check back in and see what I’ve accomplished. Finishing the basement, etc, so a moderate goal list:

Add about 40 T206s - currently at 169
Add Demmitt or O’Hara variations
T206 Lajoie

Can I do this between 3 and 4 k?

I lost out on this "MISSED IT". And would love to overpay and find another one!

Great topic!

I want to get close to completing my T206 HOF Portrait collection, knowing I probably won't get either of the Cobb's this year and of course Wagner and Plank being unattainable. Still working on the following:

- Bresnahan
- Brown
- Both Chance
- Evers
- Jennings
- Matty (bigger ticket)
- McGraw No Cap
- Tinker

I've also started trying to get all the different backs offered...again within reason. Lucky to recently pick up an EPDG and Tolstoi. Hindu is probably about the next rarest I'll try to attain. No budget to go after BL, Uzit or Drum.

Happy Collecting in 2021!!!

Bill

Hi Bill - Plank is mid-40s?

BCauley 01-13-2021 01:43 PM

1) Keep trucking along on my '33 Goudey HOFer set.

2) Same thing with '53 Bowman Color HOFers.

3) I won't finish #1 anytime soon but should finish #2 in which case I would move on to another set to work on picking up the HOFers only.

Jason 01-13-2021 02:04 PM

Same as always to keep plugging along on the T210 \ T209-2 sets. Would love to finish any of the 4 Series I'm still working on. Its starting off better than last year!

fisherboy7 01-13-2021 02:37 PM

I'd love to add 1-2 more E107 HOFers to my collection in 2021, is that too much to ask? :)

Good luck to everyone in their card collecting pursuits this year.

EGreenwood 01-13-2021 02:58 PM

I enjoyed the thread peanuts.

I have been able to knock out one goal and am hoping to get one or two more this year:

Oscar Stanage back runs - T207 is done. I would love to pick up a Tolstoi T206. I need Tolstoi and Broadleaf. I need Sovereign and Hindu for T-205.

Pick up a T200 for the set - Got DET-A thanks to Eric (iowadoc77). I just need BOS-N, NY-A, and STL-N to complete the set.

Knock out a couple of non-sport sets - N3 Arms and 50B Wildman are the closest.

Aquarian Sports Cards 01-13-2021 03:46 PM

What the heck. It won't happen but my goal is to get at least one of the two T220 Silver Borders that I'm missing for my set. If you know the set you know which ones those two are!

Snapolit1 01-13-2021 03:53 PM

My goal is to buy cards and memorabilia that are meaningful and make me happy. Don't care if it's worth a lot or a little.

And not to end up buying a lot of things that I look back on a month later and ask "why?... why?... can I sell this to get rid of it?"

I also hope to support good people who are pleasant to work with who make the hobby a better place to hang out. Scott R. Scott B. Al C.

sdimag 01-13-2021 04:14 PM

2021 goals

Finish my T-206 and 1933 goudey team sets (T-206 has 53 Giants☹️). Upgrade my Roberto Clemente Topps collection. And have fun collecting cards, and memorabilia that I enjoy!

Exhibitman 01-13-2021 04:52 PM

Vanquish my opponents and bathe in their blood. No, wait, that's my law office to-do list.

I will settle for a trip to the National.

t213 01-14-2021 06:16 AM

Get one of three T217s I need (Delhi hands at chest, Vitt, Wheeler)

Obtain at least five from this list:
T206 Broad Leaf, Red Hindu, Carolina Brights
T214
T215

Andy

Howe’s Hunter 01-14-2021 07:58 AM

Just six cards

Doesn’t matter who. Just six T206s with Howe McCormick's stamp on the back.

Prices of cards in general have just gone nuts. Far outpacing my salary. So any six commons. And the first should arrive next Tuesday. So really down to five.

Mark 01-14-2021 08:37 AM

discipline!

I will keep an eye out for some E135's that are missing from my accumulation, and maybe one or two 1921 Koesters (E-121's), if they are available. I will also try to focus on the baseball bats that fit my collection.... one or two more Pirates bats from 1925-27 and three more from the ill-fated 1938 team... a handful of Giants bats from the late teens and early 1920's. Discipline is good ... but oh those targets of opportunity are hard to resist. Without meaning to, I also started collecting bats from the 24-25 Senators last year.

ullmandds 01-14-2021 08:42 AM

I'd love to complete my Dots Miller run...I'm 1 away.

In addition to that continue to buy ruth/cobb cards and any other raw cards I like/want for my binders!

Casey2296 01-14-2021 08:57 AM

Confiscate all the poorly aged fakes and throw them in the ocean along with the people selling them. May as well round up the card doctors too and toss them in for good measure.

Bobbycee 01-14-2021 09:13 AM

As I'm now down to needing less than 10 T206's to complete the set of 520, I'm hoping 2021 brings me:

2 of either Cobb Bat On in a Psa4, Demmitt or O'Hara in a PSA 2
Purchase of these in a 5 or 4:
-McGraw (Glove at Hip)
-Dahlen (Boston)
- Manning (Pitching)
- Mullin (Horizontal)
- Pelty (Vertical)
- Rossman

Steve L 01-14-2021 10:18 AM

If I could get Jake Daubert in any one of the following it would make my year- 1916 D329 Weil Baking
1917 M101-6 Felix Mendelsohn
1920 W514 Mother’s Bread
1922 W501
1922 W575-1

Added over 40 commons - check
Added a T206 Lajoie - check

No Demmitt/No O’Hara variations yet.
Looking for pink Chase and Joe Kelley T206

Really should slow down. I gather if I finish year at 260 of 520(1) that would be good.

Kevin

SD 03-23-2021 09:52 AM

Finish my 33 goudey set. Only 21 cards remain (including 2 Ruths, 1 Gehrig and Nap). Then Shift to finishing 51 Bowman set.

timzcardz 03-23-2021 10:18 AM

I'm going to go with . . . .

Organize the stuff that I already have at a quicker pace than the new stuff that is coming in!

Considering all the time I have been spending on auction sites, as opposed to going on vacation, or out to eat, or many other things that used to be normal, "stuff" has been coming in at a pretty good clip. So, it looks like a have a challenge ahead of me!

jcmtiger 03-23-2021 12:08 PM

Would like to find any of these Old Judge N172. Detroit. Deacon White, Pete Conway, Lady Baldwin, Barney Gilligan, Bobby Wheelock, George Rooks, John McGlone, Kid Baldwin error. I know good luck lol. Joe

tab 03-23-2021 12:09 PM

1) If I can add a Cobb bat on by years end this would be one heck of a year for me.

I already added 2 of the last scarce backs I needed only leaving 1 more for “my back run”.

2) Sell/trade off all doubles and triple T206’s I don’t need.

3) Get rid of all modern cards in my house that are 70’s to present. Except what I keep in my PC.

If I can do that I will have 1 major goal for 2022. Add a drum T206

I totally agree with this strategy and the goal to make collecting more fun based going forward.

I just started collecting Yankees stadium/facsimile signed balls from the 50's and 60's. Inexpensive and very fun.

T-213 Type 1 and 3 Yankees and a Rose PC Yankee here I come.

I have also enjoyed the many transactions with board members, and look forward to more in the future.

mrreality68 03-23-2021 01:22 PM

MY Goal this year is

1. Trying to do a Run on the 1916 Joe Jackson Card with the various advertising backs
2. Try and get 1 card from each year of Babe Ruth's Card playing days

LincolnVT 03-23-2021 01:26 PM

2021

Complete the 1952 Topps set...which I did...407 / 407. ✅

egri 03-23-2021 01:28 PM

If I can add five more signed 1953 Topps that I don't already have it will be a win. I was outbid on one last month, and it had been a few months since I saw any I needed, so this may not be feasible, especially with how crazy prices have been.

BuckiGuy 03-23-2021 02:33 PM

Find a 1950 R423 Jackie purple back

Touch'EmAll 03-23-2021 02:35 PM

Would like to pick up that 1930's 4-in-1 Exhibit with both Gehrig and Dimaggio.
But its gotta look nice. I passed on couple already due to flaws. Maybe too picky.

Celtics18 03-24-2021 05:46 PM

Obtain 43/49 Top 50 NBA rookie Autos (only 49 because Bird and Magic on same card). I currently sit at 32.

4 impossible grails (Wilt, Mikan, Maravich, MJ) & giving myself some room in case I can't get all the others.

Frankish 03-24-2021 06:06 PM

This year I'm limiting myself to three goals. Hopefully I can stick to it.

1. Upgrade a dozen or so cards that bother me in my 71 Topps ungraded set.

2. Complete a couple of full runs of autograph cards I've been working on. One card left for Monte Irvin and one for Larry Doby. A few other sets need two or three.

3. Hunt down some cards in a fairly obscure Japanese gum pack set I'm working on. There are 120 or so cards in the set, a handful of which are still unknown or at least not reported on any checklist. I have 64 of the cards including 8 of the 12 short-run cards (working theory). I'm hoping to add 5-10 this year.

This. This. This. Every year I say I'm going to sell or give away loads of accumulated cards that really don't speak to me. But I never do...just too much work. If I were smart, I would just admit that I probably won't unload that stuff but I could STOP BUYING things that I don't really need. :D

Snapolit1 03-24-2021 06:13 PM

Buy a card for $1000 that on the day I plan to retire I can sell for $500,000.

Yep, that's a goal. Call me shallow and a blight on the hobby.

Cmvorce 03-24-2021 06:15 PM

Great thread.

For me:

Obtain t206 Young Portrait (any back)
Obtain t206 Speaker (non Piedmont or Sweet Cap back)
Finish the 1971 or 1972 Topps complete set
Decide if I want to make a run at completing the 1952 Topps set (Mantle excluded)

Or, if prices level out, scrap all that at get a 33 Goudey Ruth.

would like to pick up some
t206 brown hindu commons
also need a cy young and mathewson portrait

If prices stay up, sell off most of my collection. I would like to pick up a Wagner, E95 preferred and fill in any holes in my Clemente collection, but other than those two I am losing interest in the hobby as prices sky rocket.

well if you do...there's one card I want!!!!

bnorth 03-25-2021 05:41 PM

For cards, pick up a lower end T210 Morris for my Ft Worth collection. Also pick up a few more Wade Boggs bats.

EDIT: LOL, after posting I checked eBay and now own the T210 Morris card. Weirdly from a member that I offered the same amount to on here and never got a response. Now to get some more bats. :)
