Republicaninmass 05-14-2021 05:13 AM

lots of new releases in these picks!

Sad state of affairs. If it isn't a dequel, prequel, reboot, etc, people won't watch it I guess.

Oh Man Animal House! It blows away any type of remake, ie Old School, etc.

However, I did like Back to School

One of the old talkies I always liked was Glenngarry Glenross

Trying to add some off the radar

Last train to Busan

mark evans 05-14-2021 09:51 AM

Thanks for the responses. I have been hoping to identify some outstanding lesser-known movies to check out. Here's two more movies that popped into my mind:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Body Heat (1981)

AustinMike 05-14-2021 04:28 PM

Many great movies have been listed, but I have but 1 favorite movie:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Saving Private Ryan.

Oh, okay, I have 2 favorite films:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Saving Private Ryan, and The Exorcist.

Three, I have three favorite flicks:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Saving Private Ryan, The Exorcist, and Invaders from Mars.

This could go on forever, so I'll end with:

Roger the Shrubber - "Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say "Ni" at will to old ladies. There is a pestilence upon this land. Nothing is sacred. Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress at this period in history."

Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

mikemb 05-15-2021 08:43 AM

Here are some of my favorites that I did not see listed:

Writehooks 05-15-2021 10:50 AM

The Manchurian Candidate (1962 original. The 2004 remake with Denzel Washington is abysmal)
Fail Safe (1964)
Seven Days in May (1964)
Soylent Green (1973)
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1977)
Falling Down (1992)

Wihawk 05-15-2021 11:38 AM

The Dam Busters
Dunkirk
Darkest Hour

ocjack 05-16-2021 08:37 AM

Don't know how I forgot: 1966's Carlo Ponti movie Blowup. A great plot and a time capsule for that decade.

mcgwirecom 05-16-2021 05:17 PM

I feel the most overlooked movie of all time is Slingblade. Powerful movie, great acting. Billy Bob is genius.

steve B 05-16-2021 10:17 PM

Many movies I like won't make many lists of all time greats.
Many I used to really like have aged poorly.

Shogun Assassin.
Lightning Swords of Death- This and the above are cut down from six Japanese movies centered on the same main character. The originals are a bit more harsh than the cut down for the US market versions, which mostly include the comically violent fight scenes with little background.

They Live
Pale Rider. (and most other Eastwood westerns)
Slapshot
The wraith
Predator 2 - Not as good a movie as the first, but it develops the predators so much more, their "rules" and morals etc.
A Sunday in Hell - cycling documentary about Paris Roubaix one year in the 70's.
Buckaroo Banzai
The Great Race
Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines

cardsagain74 05-21-2021 01:11 PM

Anyone who enjoys gambling/casino/sports betting movies should check out "The Runner" (1999), with John Goodman and Ron Eldard.

It's probably the best modern movie on those subjects ever made, but somehow it's stayed in complete obscurity

packs 05-21-2021 01:33 PM

Some of my faves:

Cool Hand Luke
Stand By Me
No Country For Old Men
Bicycle Thief
The 400 Blows

58pinson 05-21-2021 02:50 PM

Any site that sees "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" get two mentions in a Favorite Flicks thread is A-OK with me.

Shemp 05-26-2021 01:36 PM

"Tremors
Evil Dead 2
Princess Bride
The Big Country"

Some of my favorite movies too!

I'd add Re-Animator and Midnight Run to these 4

Snapolit1 05-26-2021 06:38 PM

Goodfellas.

I haven't seen it; I keep meaning to but haven't gotten around to it yet. Greyhound is another one I have in my queue; Tom Hanks was supposed to come onboard and watch it with us, but the pandemic put paid to that.
