Toronto Virtual Card Show

Is anyone planning on joining? I guess my hesitancy is that there will be a lot of hockey, which I'm not interested in. Cool idea though.

It will be OVERWHELMINGLY hockey... it's Canada.
So it probably isn't for you at all

I signed up. Free. Will be fun to poke around for a few hours. Interested in the technology and how it comes off.

If its anything like the in person expo it will be about 90% hockey. Sometimes I find some baseball deals when I go but you have to look hard

I signed up too. Maybe I will look for a Gretzky or Lemieux rookie if there isn't much baseball selection. Or a Canadian Goudey Ruth. Either way as mentioned it should be interesting to see how this turns out.

I do recall seeing about three 52' Topps Mantles last time and quite a few 53' Topps Mantles. I know that Topps tried to sell their stuff here in Ontario back in the 1950s.

It's definitely worth checking out! You never know what you might find! :)

I'm not sure what you mean by "tried to sell their stuff in Ontario"? Topps baseball cards were available across Canada in the 1950s.

I'm talking about the 52' high numbers. The company had many left-overs and tried to sell them in Ontario back in the 1950s. I think Quebec might have been the other province, but I am not sure about that one. When Topps started selling baseball cards, I don't believe they were available in Canada. However, it's quite possible that the later sets from this decade were made available in Canada.

1952 Topps high numbers were available all over Canada. Every release of Topps sets from the 1950s were. As were Bowman cards, at least for 1954 and 1955.
I purchased cards in Winnipeg from a childhood collection directly from the gentleman who collected them, including '52, '53, '54, '58 and '59 Topps and '54 and '55 Bowman cards.

If you actually look more in to it, there's examples online mentioning Topps baseball cards being sold in Canada in the 1950s, including this collection from Kelowna, BC that contained '52 to '54 Topps cards with many '52 high numbers (Mantle, Robinson, Matthews).....

I have bought several childhood collections of Topps baseball cards all over Canada. I don't recall many collections that had examples from every series of a particular year except for 52 and 58 Topps.
Could just be me though.

Wow, I seriously didn't know this! I always thought that only Ontario and Quebec were targeted due to their large markets. I didn't know that some village kid in the west coast was busting open packs of 52' highs - crazy. By the way, did you ever read The Modern Hobby Guide To Topps Chewing Gum: 1938 To 1956 by David Hornish? I don't remember him mentioning anything about this in his book, but it has been a while since I've looked at it, so maybe he did, and I forgot.

This is an interesting subject and worthy of its own thread.
