Easiest and hardest backruns?

A lot of collectors seem to be going toward collecting back/color runs of certain poses, So what back/color runs do you think would be the easiest and which do you think would be the hardest to complete? Just to keep things interesting, lets say there has to be a minimum of 9 cards for the run and all cards must be known to exist (not just in theory)?

I like the 1933 Goudey backs.,.they all look the same!

I think that the easiest back run to complete would be a common player that does not have a Drum or Uzit back.
The Red Cobb would be the toughest to complete as it includes so many tough backs including the Cobb back and it would be the most costly to camplete.

Here is my Hooks Wiltse back run. I have recently added an American Beauty 350 and a Tolstoi back that are not pictured. Still looking for a Cycle 350 and AB 460.
Also want to add a Coupon back

John, I think you are right that the red Cobb would likely be the most expensive due to the Cobb/Cobb, but I think the E Cobb bat leaning would give it a run for being tougher overall when you consider the Tango Eggs, Nadja, VE, Mino, General Baking, Mothers Bread (does this exist?), etc.

Cobb the most expensive? If you count factory variations there are 3 Wagners.

Any back run I am working on is the hardest. Everything else is easy!

I think the E92 & friends can be real hard bc, as DJ mentioned, you have Nadja, and blank, and blue/black/maybe red crofts, T216s that could include all 3 Kotton back variations, MINO, and VE (which is as hard as anything), Tango eggs, Mothers bread, etc. I mean Crofts Cocoa is cake when compared to some of these, and forget the E105, E106, E101, E102, Dockman, and whatever else I forgot.

Here is a link to my Wagner throwing and bat off back runs, still very much works in progress. And I am softly attempting the same folly with Cobb on bat, but as DJ mentioned, that is nuts.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/156271...57703230513722

Another very underated back run would be the Joe Jackson M101-4/5. Altoona, Homes to Holmes, Successful Farming, etc. That would be crazy hard.

And, yes, the Super 6 in T206 would be rough -- I am almost done with Evers Yellow Sky (eslewhere in that link).

Of course, a T206 Wagner or Plank run would be awesome. Not many in the run, but not many period.

ValKehl 07-19-2019 12:54 PM

Ryan, a M101-4/5 back run of ANY player, not just Joe Jax, "would be crazy hard." I have WaJo with a few different backs, but I have a long, long way to go.

Agreed. Maybe Jay will grace us with his Wagner run again. I have a 12-back run of a much less noteworthy player--Tillie Walker: (blank back excluded--Ill add it to the scan later)https://photos.imageevent.com/imover...e/tillyx11.jpg

ValKehl 07-19-2019 08:22 PM

Wow Todd, that is a great back run! You have some of the real M101 toughies, not that I'm telling you anything that you don't already know. Congrats!

asphaltman 07-19-2019 08:44 PM

That's really impressive Todd

Jobu 07-19-2019 09:13 PM

Aren't the orange background E94 and red backed E92 Croft's Candy all 1-of-1 cards? If so, anyone with one of those poses would be at the top of the list.

tedzan 07-19-2019 10:01 PM

OK, here is my complete run of the McGraw (glove) cards. Exactly 13 - T206 backs were printed on each of the Exclusive 12 subjects in the 460-only series.
I'm attempting to complete the run on all the Exclusive 12 subjects (12 x 13 backs = 156 cards). Wish me lot's of luck, I'll need it :)

Most of the known red crofts are not 1 of 1. Here's the list of all red crofts I know about.

- Barry x2 - SGC A, SGC 10
- Bemis - SGC A
- Bescher x3 - SGC 50, SGC A, raw
- Crawford x2 - SGC 20, SGC 10
- Donovan - SGC 10
- Davis x3 - SGC 60, SGC 50, SGC 30 (Lionel Carter)
- Evers - SGC 80
- Miller (fielding) x3 - SGC 40, SGC 40, was PSA A
- Shean - SGC 10

Todd, that is really awesome!

And with this pick up tonight, I have completed a T206 Tinker bat-off back run, including the blank back and no print. My first ever completed back run! I do have a few t213's, and will pick up a T214 or T215s if I ever come a cross one/them. But I consider this run complete, as I have picked up all the T206's

Thanks guys. And congrats with the Tinker T206 run Ryan. Small world-- that AB Tinker used to be mine, albeit in an SGC 60 holder.

Wow, these are some really impressive back runs here, guys!

And in regards to the question on the orange E94s, those are all unique at this time. I have to pretend it doesn’t exist when I look at my Speakers, though I know there is one out there!

Hal Chase run......

One of my favorite ballplayers from the New York Highlanders era is Hal Chase. I started this run in 1981 by acquiring this OLD MILL card. This run is nearly complete.
I do have a SWEET CAPORAL 350 Factory #25; however, I cannot find it. And, as of today, no Blue Chase with a DRUM back is known. Perhaps, it's a No-Print.
Of these 20 backs, the Chase with the BROAD LEAF 350 is the most difficult back to find. Followed by the LENOX card, and the red HINDU.

Hi Ted, Is there a Cycle 460? I've got a raw 350 that will either grade a 5 or Authentic/Trim. I was watching David's Red Hindu but stopped watching once it got over $4000. I miss the 2010 prices from when I started this collection. I can't even imagine the stuff you have seen over the years.

Hi Ron

Yes, there is a CYCLE 460 blue Chase. It is not an easy card to find. I just realized that I show two CYCLE 350 Chase cards. My mistake.

I could spend hours telling you of unbelievable deals I've had (or have seen). But, it's late, so here's one I'll never forget….in the early 1980's at the good ole Willow Grove Show,
you could buy a VgEx to Ex T206 DRUM card for only $100 each ! !

Anyhow, speaking about DRUM's. Of the six-Super-Prints, Chance, Cobb, and Evers have been confirmed with DRUM backs. So, why NO blue Chase with a DRUM ?

Ron.....are you going to the National ?

I think a Chase Drum will show up eventually. There are new finds every day but it's usually 1986-1992 "junk" but I continue to look. I won't be making it to the National this year but already making plans for next year.

No info on how easy or hard, but below is a compilation of subjects as seen in E90-1 American Caramel, E92 Crofts Candy, E92 Crofts Cocoa, E92 Dockman, E92 Nadja, E101, E102, E105 Mello Mint, E106 American Caramel, D303 General Baking, D303 Mother's Bread, T216 Kotton, T216 Mino, T216 Virginia and Tango Eggs sets that share artwork and have at least 9 available cards.

Mind you, the totals seen below do not include blank backs, the Blue and Red back Crofts Candy color variations (Sorry, not familiar with availability on any of these). Any cards seen in the T216 sets are counted as 3 subjects, but due to unfamiliarity of actual availability of a subject in each set, my inclusion of these are subject to individual review. Also I have included in the totals cards from sets that have the same artwork, but have a different player identified (an example of this would be the Tinker batting card, which in both the D303 Mother's Bread and Tango Eggs sets are identified as Buck Weaver). And I may have just missed things...remember, this information is provided free of charge and was compiled by someone doing community service on the weekends, so reader beware.

The easiest back run of 9 or more examples almost certainly is a T206 from the 150-350 Series. It won't be any of the poses with a really hard to find Old Mill, but that still leaves some good candidates. From there you'd pick a pose that wasn't printed with a Hindu back.

My pick is Mike Donlin Seated. He wasn't printed with a Hindu back, and for some reason he is one of a handful of 150-350 Series poses that are fairly easy to find with an Old Mill back. I think the EPDG would be the toughest card to find, but it wouldn't take you too long to track one down.

Here are Donlin Seated backs:

my vote goes to sherry magee port!
there are ten possible back variations.
it is an iconic image, with a VERY valuable fraternal twin.

they are popular, VERY available AND EXTREMELY affordable at a fraction of the cost of the cobbs!
