Murderers' Row (boxing)

Has anyone tried collecting this group of fighters:

Charley Burley
Lloyd Marshall
Holman Williams
Herbert "Cocoa Kid" Lewis Hardwick
Jack Chase
Eddie Booker
Aaron Wade
Bert Lytell

I have an eBay search on Burley, but it never seems to hit on a period piece. Was wondering if anyone has anything representing any of them they'd like to share. Did any of them get a card? Thanks!

Most of these guys are pretty tough to find decent memorabilia on, for whatever reason. I'll start off with some Charley Burley. These are going to mostly be from my library of previously sold stuff, so likely nothing still in inventory.

The first couple are actually Burley vs. Lloyd Marshall, so you get a two for one.

More Burley

Very, very tough stuff. Every time one of them make the HOF collectors have kittens trying to find something. Some of them have no career-contemporary ("CC") cards or only a card or two and they are obscure or rare.

Charley Burley: no known CC cards
Lloyd Marshall: 1940-70 Boxing News (UK)
Holman Williams: 1946-47 Propagandas Montiel (Cuba), plus a RPPC I have.
Herbert "Cocoa Kid" Lewis Hardwick: no known CC cards
Jack Chase: no known CC cards
Eddie Booker: no known CC cards
Aaron Wade: no known CC cards
Bert Lytell: no known CC cards

Absent cards, I go with publicity photos. Those do exist for the Cocoa Kid, Booker, Marshall and Burley. Perhaps for the others, I just haven't chased them.

Wow! Really enjoyed looking at everything. I'm glad I asked. Thanks Dave and Adam.

Adam, was hoping you would join in - I just read your SCD HOF article, so I figured you would know.

I do my best, John. The great thing about collecting boxing is that you can never know it all. Just pretend that you do :)

Holman Williams

Thanks Dave! That looks like the Propagandas Montiel card of Holman Williams Adam mentions. And the photo with Joe Louis. The thread keeps getting better.

I have one more request for the experts that I think I will be able to tie in. Archie Moore talked up a lot of the boxers in this group via interview, etc.

What career-contemporary cards does Moore have? Google is showing a 1955 Topps hocus focus, but I thought there should be more since he was a champion.

Thanks!

A couple of Archie Moore Cards issued in Sweden I believe, around 1960. They are not technically "boxing cards", I suppose, as they are from his appearance in "Huckleberry Finn", but they were issued during his career.

Cool. Thanks Dave.

John, if you go to Adam’s website he has a picture of the Archie Moore Hocus Focus under the catalog update section.

Thanks Chad. I found it. I'll be reading through the website as well.

Did anyone get this photo of Marshall and Burley? I was the underbidder. I threw a snipe out, but I had no idea how to price it. I contacted the seller, but they didn't have much info to share. I would have liked to have had it even though I'm not much of a photo collector - if someone asked me about Type 1, etc. I wouldn't have much of an answer.

Looks like a snapshot, likely from the Tommy Farmer (west coast boxing manager) collection.

I believe the couple of photos I posted at the top of this thread, came from that same grouping.

Similar type snapshot with that matte style photo finish paper.

Hell, I might have even sold it 15-20 years ago or so. Wish I kept better records from back then.

I believe they are Type 1's, but they weren't printed on glossy photo paper, so they don't quite pop, clarity wise, because of that.

There was a small stack of snapshots in that collection from several fights that took place around that same time period. I believe there were similar shots of a couple Manuel Ortiz fights that took place around that same time.

Looks like it went for a reasonable price.

I was an underbidder too but dropped out early since I have something from the two of them already

Thanks Dave and Adam!

Dave, I didn't even remember that you had posted similar photos. I see them now. And thanks for the added info.

I bid 99.99 with the reasoning that if someone beats me, they'll have to spend 100. Did the winner get a deal?

Ahhh...."deal". A bit of a loaded word when it comes to photos.

I don't think he got a bargain....you might have kept him from getting it for a bargain, but he did get if for a fair price for himself IMO.

It's all about right place, right time, and who's looking at it, when it comes to vintage photos.

I've sold photos from that run for a couple hundred bucks or more...I've also sold them for a lot less then that.

The more I look at the one that went off on Ebay recently, I'm thinking there's a very good chance I might have sold it years ago at the Canastota Boxing Show for under 10 bucks...before I realized what a rarity it was....or I might not have, LOL!

Thanks Dave! It's a good lesson. Normally I root for auctions, but everything has a downside - in this case, maybe I would have paid the BIN or been able to negotiate if there was an offer button.
