January 2022 Pickups

4 Attachment(s)
Thrilled with my 1st pickup in the new year - a 1949 Cleveland Indians Sun Picture Camera kit, pack #2, including original mailing envelope and accompanying promotional items. This "set" consists of 5 packs of 4 negatives each, plus photosensitive paper to make pictures using the negatives per the instructions. I am especially happy to add pack #2, as the negatives included are Bob Kennedy, Bob Lemon, Thurman Tucker, and Satchel Paige - perhaps his most difficult Cleveland "card" to obtain.

One of the promotional cards ties this set to the Shelby Gum Company, a connection previously unknown. Since the envelope and contents were sent in 1950, and the set was originally issued in 1949, my suspicion is that the Shelby Gum tie-in may have been a promotional collaboration to get rid of remainders from the prior year.

I now have 2 of the 5 packs, 8 of the 20 negatives. Interesting to see that the packs themselves were multi-colored. Now hopeful that I will find the other packs in the future to complete the set!

Very cool stuff.

Mine is a bit more mundane but I was pleased to get a nice Jackie Robinson PM10 at a good price.

That's great! Not mundane at all.

Boardwalk Brown Lantern Slide

1 Attachment(s)
I picked up a 1914-15 lantern slide depicting Carroll "Boardwalk" Brown in NYAL uni. There are a couple 1915 team photos of Brown extant but this is only image I have seen so far of Brown individually.

Great lantern slide Buzz

Congrats on the pickup

Jimmy O'Connell bat

2 Attachment(s)
Excited to get this Jimmy O'Connell Spalding Autograph model bat. I collect O'Connell items (best known for the 1924 O'Connell-Dolan scandal) due to his connection with Santa Clara University. I never knew that this bat existed until it showed up on ebay last month. Bushing's Spalding bat guide lists an Autograph model bat for "John O'Connell" being sold in 1924 (only one year), but, given the year it is clear that the bat sold by Spalding was for Jim, not John.

Great Sunday Magazine! I’m always on the lookout for football covers, and they don’t come along very often.

What a cool, cool bat. I love old Giants bats, and this is a great find for you.

Been a while since I've posted a pick up. Got this at the local antique show a week or so back. circa 1925 I believe. Nothing on the internets at all about this promotion and Poll Parrott was a huge shoe brand back in those days.

Minty! ^^^^

Forbes field - banner

Just picked up a banner that most likely hung outside the stadium for the 1960 World Series. Similar ones lined the inside of the stadium but they didn't have the black backing on them.

Thanks. I've been looking for one for a while and finally found one.

I knew when I saw “mrozie,” it would be good. It’s great to have the photographic provenance.

Without a doubt. Something like your banner is way, way rarer than any card EVER produced.

So this tiny book with the title Snaps arrived today from Kansas....how it got there--I don't know but now it is back in Rockford, Illinois--home of the Rockford Peaches where it belongs. Could not be happier...about 40 Peaches photos dating to 1951/52. And also about 55 pictures of the Muskegon/Kalamazoo Lassies from 1948-50 as well. These just don't appear that much anymore!

Dewey 01-21-2022 06:14 PM

That Dottie Green players only pic is next level cool. Welcome back home!

Just a little extra here with the back commentary on the pickups. Also, Pettit is the only with a straight line cut on the border of his two pictures, except of course with the top left border on one.

The pictures were taken in March 1952 (mentioned on the back of most photos) in San Bernadino.

That Peaches album is unreal. WOW, I'd love to see them all.

And the writing on the back of those spring training photos is priceless: "Show this one to your friend the jock"

I picked up a couple of 1937 Goudey R342 Thum-Movie books of Joe Medwick

I'd never heard of these until I saw them in an auction. Learning something every day.

For those who aren't familiar with them they're a series of photos in a book that you thumb through to see the player bat, field, etc. A 1937 equivalent of an animated GIF. :-)

Brian Van Horn you had me at Danny Murtaugh
