The Lionel Carter Collection DVD

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Anyone else watch this yet? It was neat to see how he kept his collection...I had only imagined it before this.

Does anyone know when Mr Carter stopped collecting and why? It was also interesting to hear that he had set up at card shows and sold cards. I did not know that. I also enjoyed his comments about Bill Mastro showing up in the 1970s to their local card auctions and winning every lot.

Posted By: RC
Many thanks to Doug Allen for his assistance in obtaining this video about Lionel Carter and his collection. I enjoyed it, as would most card collectors. I found his stories about telling his wife that Sunday nights were "card mounting" nights and that he planned on continuing his hobby after marriage entertaining as well.

Thanks to Lionel and his wife for sharing.

RC

I doubt Doug, or Mastro Auctions, would mind if you burned a copy of the dvd for yourself too. Mr.Carter was all about promoting the hobby so in that spirit I think we are safe. Everyone that collects vintage baseball cards should see this video, imho.....You really get to see one (actually 2 with Bill in it) of the hobby pioneers up close and personal....regards

Posted By: Bob
I would like to think that Mr. Carter would enjoy talking to Joe Blue Collar Card Collector and share his love for the hobby. Having acquired several of his cards (now encapsulated by SGc as from the Lionel Carter Collection), I know I'd love to sit down with him and just listen to the stories of the early days and his conversations with Jefferson Burdick, Frank Nagy, Buck Barker and others.

I am right with you though. Mr. Carter was a friend of Burdicks and helped him with the ACC. Mr.Carter also wrote many articles in hobby trade papers too, from what I understand. My guess is that he helped the hobby more than almost anyone on this board.....best regards

Posted By: Bob
I got the impression from watching the video that Lionel Carter was writing 9-10 pages (actually 4-5 pages since he said they were on half page sized paper) and sending out mimeographs (anyone over 45 here remember the old machines where you typed on the special mimeograph paper and then attached it to a drum and turned it to make mimeo copies) to others. I am not sure that they were winding up in trade periodicals or just being sent out to other collectors. I'd like to think he was the forerunner of the Net54 Board, sharing information with collectors, but without the jokes, off-topic threads and flames.

Posted By: leon
I have heard of Lionel Carter for only about 10 yrs (since I started collecting). Since I am interested in the history of the hobby, and not only the cards, he has been a recognized name for me. The reason I took your comment in a somewhat offensive manner is that I had just viewed the DVD of him and he reminded me of my grandfather, rest his soul. I am not sure how to put it any better than my definition of what "the old guard" is. Honest, nice, integrity, etc....I am sending my DVD to Trae this week and if you want to view it I will have him send it to you and you can send it back to me after you view it, if you want? It's worth watching.....as a matter of fact I am going to watch it again before I send it off....best regards

I just got it back from Trae. I think it's a very good video. Also, I just got in a group of about 15 of Lionel's cards from ebay auctions. As is mentioned in the video they are nice. Most of the ones I got are in SGC 20-30 holders and they really do all present extremely well for their grade. No hype here. You can tell they were hand picked by Mr.Carter. best regards

Sorry to bring up a really old thread, but all of this Lionel Carter talk in recent weeks has really got me interested in learning more about him.

Does anyone still have a copy of The Lionel Carter Collection DVD mentioned in this thread?

I'd love to borrow it (or buy it) from someone who still may have it.

MyGuyTy 03-31-2014 03:14 PM

I'd sure like to see it as well. Never even knew a Lionel Carter DVD existed.

I have a copy of the CD. Run time is 28 minutes long.
I thought of e-mailing you a video file, but I don't think
that's going to work. File probably going to be too big.

I just checked CD. Its a 1 gig VOB (video) file, way too
large to e-mail.

Could you possibly burn it or is copywrited? I'd like to see it as well.

Kawika 03-31-2014 03:45 PM

It would be great if someone could upload it to YouTube. Would do it myself but I left my CD, along with about a half-ton of Mastro catalogs, back in da Islands when I moved to the Mainland.

MyGuyTy 03-31-2014 03:57 PM

If anybody has a copy to sell or burn, PM me :)

Folks,

I'm working on converting the CD into an MP4 format. If I could get it
converted, the file may be small enough to send in an e-mail. Please
bear with me. Soon as it's done burning I'll check to see if it converted
properly. I'll let everybody know in a little bit.

All,

The file did convert into MP4 format. Unfortunately, even as a
compressed ZIP file it's too large to e-mail. Sorry,

ErikV
