January Pickups

Figured I would start off the New Year pickup thread. Happy New Years to all the board members.

First I picked up these 2 Eagles pennants that I hadn't seen before coming across them recently. The first one is a green version, that I believe dates to the mid 1940's. The second, is a blue pennant produced by the Ad Flag company of Chicago. I believe the quarterback artistically rendered on the pennant is patterned after the NFL star of the early 40s Sid Luckman (he never played for the Eagles obviously). With the blue color of this pennant, I believe this pennant dates to around 1940-41.

The next 2 items, my dad picked up recently, and he was curious if we could get some help here with dating them. The first item is a Reach bat with lathe marks that is a smaller bat measuring about 25 inches long. The bat is marked with AJ Reach Co - 87. The second item is a small baseball cap with no makers mark, with Play Ball and crossed bats on front. Any idea of the age of these 2?

Tom Earley Day

This one somehow slipped by and I was able to grab it for a whopping 4 bucks. Tom Earley played 6 seasons all with the Boston Braves. He was only 18-24 over his career, which was interupted by WWII.

I'm wondering if he's on any cards and if so, could someone post an image? Thanks very much!

Finally I have time to show some recent pickups.
First is a c.1960 professional model Pittsburgh Pirates jersey
Next a 1939 Reds/Yanks World Series ashtray/dish thingy
Next a ceramic Brooklyn Bum figure - looks like a repainted Stanford Pottery Brooklyn Bum but its not a bank???
And lastly a pair of really cool Cardinals bookends. I'm guessing 1950s-60s.

Brock,
Very cool Pirates jersey.

New pickups

Picked up these two neat (at least I think so) pieces of Yale emphemera with a Walter Camp Connection. They are programs for 1879 and 1880 intramural athletic contests which include many track races, football kicking contests, hammer throwing, bicycle racing, baseball throwing, tug of war, etc. Walter Camp is listed as one of the competitors in both programs, with the running high jump in 1879, and the Hurdle Race in 1880. He is not listed as a competitor in the Football kick though. These have some paper residue on them (assuming from scrapbook removal, but are in otherwise great shape, and are made of a thicker stock paper.

Forever Young 01-11-2010 09:53 AM

Thanks Guys...yeah I picked them up on good old ebay. I paid for them but am always happy to add good Babe and lou images to the "vault"
(i.e. mattress).

PS: I cannot believe how big the sun/shadows makes Babe's nose look. It is ginormous!!!

I already have a real nice Hoak 3x5 that I'm using for my 1960 pirates project, and was debating on whether to use that for the 55 dodgers and try to find a 60 or 61 pirates signed card when I found this.

I didn't know how many years it would take to add the second of my four holy grails to my collection, but thanks to my good friend Mark Steinberg, this beauty just arrived.

Mike - I am stoked for you man! Cant believe how many times over the last few years you've talked about "landing" a Spalding and you finally got one!!! I know I am in the minority, but the example you "landed" is my favorite. And you bought a car today as well. Seriously, I have as big a smile as your daughter. Thrilled for you bro.

mjkm90 01-13-2010 04:52 AM

Thanks fellas. It's interesting how much I am enjoying this piece. Since the deal was completed I have hardly even looked at ebay or other sources. It will be a while before I "have" to have something else.

Nice pickup, Chris! I don't know if you recognize the name, but T.J. "Boss Tom" Pendergast was the political boss of Kansas City during the first part of the twentieth century. He handpicked Harry Truman from obscurity to become the Democratic candidate for US Senate in 1934. Take some time to do a little research on Boss Tom and you'll appreciate your purchase even more!

Actually that's the main reason I got it. :) I live in KC and loved the KC connection. Thanks for the compliment. ;)

Being in the newspaper biz (yeah, we're an endangered species) and having been a huge fan of The National when it was around, this seems like a natural for my collection.

I'm waiting to hear from Hunt Auctions on the shipping costs, which easily could turn this from a great to not-so-good buy.

MGHPro 01-17-2010 08:07 PM

I just picked up the bottom bat to go along with the top one. You dont see these often and was glad to get it.

Matt, great bats, very rare indeed. Sorry about the delay in getting the bat list to you. Hopefully I can get them rounded up soon.

Frank DeFord was the editor as I remember. Top-notch writing for every sport. That's a really cool piece, nice pick-up.

Thanks to fellow board member Scott Garner, I won his ebay auction for a ticket stub to the first no-hitter for Koufax. I now have three of the four.

Now I just need to find a photo from the game...

Mike, What a beauty!!!!! Congrats!!!! Those Spalding's are so great, and that's my favorite one I think. I remember a story your bud Ryan Simms told me, that before he got one...his wife would chide him about ordering the more expensive bottle of wine at dinner because she said "that money could be going towards your Spalding trophy"

Voit

<img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/PICT6760.jpg">
19" wide x 11" tall x 6 1/2" deep
Picked this up a week ago at the Glendale Show...plus picked up some non sport stuff that you can read about here for the long version. It's motorized and it has a stem that sticks out the top that turns to display a ball...so now I'm looking for a vintage Voit basketball...though I'm tempted to stick something on there really old, though wouldn't match the display

I also picked up another pretty good piece earlier this month...but it's related to the Bailey plaque, so may post it there.

TheBig6 01-25-2010 12:17 AM

Just picked up this Dr. Jayne's Expectorant Baseball Folder circa 1910.
The shortstop bottom right looks like Wagner to me.
