1888 KIMBALL's (Factory # 649)....show us your N184 cards
Photos of the KIMBALL Factory (#649) in Rochester, NY (circa 1880's)....this link is fascinating....do spend some time en-
joying it, as it is very informative. http://users.ap.net/~burntofferings/...llfactory.html Civil War veteran and Tobacco tycoon, William Smith Kimball, produced his cigarette brand in the Peerless Tobacco Works in Rochester, NY. In the 1890's, the American Tobacco Co. (ATC) transferred their Goodwin & Company cigarette brands, "Gypsy Queen" and "Old Judge", from their NYC plant to the new and more efficient Kimball plant in Rochester. This was a scenario that was subsequently repeated (during the 1905-1912 era) with other ATC brands (see scans). . In 1888, Kimball inserted sportscards premiums (N184) in his cigarette packs to promote the sale of his cigarettes. Four of the 50-cards in this set feature BB players, they are...... E. A. Hey Jon
How tough are those Kimball packs ?
I have very fond memories of Rochester. My Uncle and Aunt and cousins lived there and we would visit them often back in the late 1940's thru the 1970's. TED Z |

I think I was lucky to get this one. Not exactly rare, but you don't really see a whole lot of them either. I guess they just don't get transacted much. This one certainly won't be! :-)

Thanks for posting your Annie Oakley. I often see her Allen & Ginter (N28) card....here is mine. I seldom see her Kimball's card. <img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/annieoakley.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> Best regards, TED Z |

Your Dell Darling is absolutely the nicest Kimball's BB player card that I've seen.
The only one I've had that approaches yours is James O'Neil. Thanks for posting it here. Best regards, TED Z |
1888 Kimball's
Some years ago I obtained a Kimball's full pack and opened it. No luck..it contains a Butterfly card. A yellow paper (ad? - coupon?) separates the card from the cigarettes. I did not remove that paper for fear that I would not be able to reinsert it without damaging the loose tobacco cigarettes.

Here is my Tip O'Neil (O'Neill), it presents well but is trimmed As you know he's the biggest star of the 4 Baseball subjects so I'm glad to have it. He hit .435 during the '87 season when the card was produced. http://www.qualitycards.com/pictures/1264511017.jpg |

Your O'Neil beats mine (trimmed, notwithstanding). Do you also have E. A. Burch ? Then we would have at least accounted for the four BB cards in the Kimball's set. Thanks for posting your O'Neil ("Tip" O'Neill). TED Z |

Obviously not a card and I don't know if it had anything to do with the cards, but here's a period Kimball's tobacco jar.

Here is a page from the original Kimball album, which includes my favorite card in the set - the cannon ball catcher.
