I got my Pie, and now I am done

After a year plus long search, I buttoned up the Diamond Stars base set last night. I was able to grab a high number #99 Pie Traynor yesterday and concluded this quest. I am trying to put together a set for each decade up to the 1970's to pass down to the kids.
So far, I have completed:
1900's - Working on t206....not gonna happen
1910 T201 Factory 649 (working on Factory 30)
1920's - still trying to figure out which set to chase
1935-36 Diamond Stars
1948 (49) Leaf
1954 Red Heart Dog Food/1952 Wheaties
1963 Bazooka All Time Greats (thin but the set makes me laugh)

On to the next!

Congrats on the completion!

Thanks Ed, I thought it was pretty cool too, my non-collecting friends/and family were less than enthusiastic, but I guess that is to be expected.

I love pie! Congrats!

philliesfan 10-22-2021 10:03 AM

NICE! Congrats!

Yoda 10-22-2021 10:14 AM

Very impressive. On to the next conquest!

chadeast 10-22-2021 10:19 AM

Congrats! As a set collector myself, I know the joy, and maybe a little sadness too, in finishing the set. On to the next set, enjoy the hunt!

Congrats...Diamond Stars cards are a great one for the collector. And those final 12 high numbers are not easy (and tough to get motivated to collect, since they have repeat designs).

Onward to your next completion!

Brian

Thanks Brian, I actually didn't know about the high number, probably still shook up from the Short Print realization with the Leaf cards, and by virtue of some lucky connections, I have doubles of a lot of the high numbers just getting placeholders and replacing with better looking cards. Pie was the only that I couldn't find at a decent price, until yesterday!

Thanks Chad, I never considered myself a set collector, I usually just grab the things that I like, and at some point hit the epiphany that "I've come this far, might as well get them all."

So that actually might be a bad thing, since I have random cards from all over the place!

yanks87 10-22-2021 10:45 AM

Thank you all! I knew that this group would understand and share my excitement!

Carter08 10-22-2021 10:48 AM

That’s awesome, congrats.

mrreality68 10-22-2021 01:31 PM

That is fantastic.
Congrats
Perhaps share some photos of your favorite cards from your set

Applause!!!!! I like the Diamond Stars... although initially I didn't like Lou Gehrig's name at the bottom of every card. National Chicle cards are interesting, I like the Sky Birds, the Diamond Stars, and the football cards. You've assembled a great set. Congrats!

Great set

Congratulations on the Diamond Stars set!
I really like them, to the point where I am seeking the Master Set.

Challenging but not impossible , since I think getting all the high numbers is the hardest part. You may consider that next :-)

I only need Lazzeri to complete my base set. I didn’t want to leave a High number for last!
Ironically Pie was my *first* high number.

So congratulations on finishing, some might say you’re just starting LOL!

Great color on those. From someone in the early stages of building a set, congrats!

Bumping this because Brian helped me out with a Red Lucas 106 to complete my set. It took me over three years, and I don't know how long it might have taken me to pin it down without him. Thank you, Brian!

My cards range between SGC A and 5, and accounting for a few remaining ungraded cards by assigning them a 1 to be conservative, the average grade is 3.21, with an average HOF grade of 3.04. I suppose this is fitting since I started the set with an Al Simmons SGC 3. Here are a few of my favorites from this beautiful set.

Those are nice-looking cards! It's easy to see that you spent a lot of time on the set.

Super happy to help out, you assembled some great looking cards, makes me want to get a graded set in SGC, the cards look great in those slabs! Huzzah! Well done!!

Mutton Chop Yaz 12-04-2021 09:32 AM

Thanks, Brian! I feel like this set was made for those SGC holders. The ones with nice color look stupendous.

LeftHandedDane 12-05-2021 09:18 AM

Amazing coincidence! I just finished the set last month - and my last card was also Pie #99!

Are you going for the variations? I have many but not all of the obvious variations (its going to be hard to pony up for the second Greenberg though). I am debating whether to go for the full set with the duplicates by year. Maybe start in low grade to save some money.

Mutton Chop Yaz 12-05-2021 10:25 AM

Congrats, Ed! Right now, I have one of each card numbered 1 through 108 plus a Sparky Adams variation, so I believe I'd need 61 variations, including the "Greenburg" for the master set. Having just finished fighting my way through the high numbers, that doesn't sound very appealing, but ask me again in a week or so.
