1984 Topps Nestle Rookie Cards: Mattingly vs Strawberry

While I realize that the value of the 84T Mattingly RC is higher than the 84 Topps Strawberry RC (around double or maybe a bit more), I find it crazy that the lowest priced Nestle version of the Mattingly $200 is listing for 10X the lowest listed price of the Nestle Strawberry $20 on eBay. Any theories as to why such a huge difference? Is the Nestle Mattingly a much scarcer card to find than the Nestle Strawberry for some reason? I understand that Strawberry has the 83TT but that doesn’t seem to impact the regular 84T version for both.

Of course, I’m on the wrong end of the spectrum, having picked up a Nestle Strawberry a while back for around $10 but don’t have a Mattingly. Thought I could just grab one of those for around $20. Guess I was sadly mistaken, huh? Oh well, can live fine without one.

Which player is more popular?

Which card has a greater demand?

Who might have a different card that most consider to be a true rookie?

I believe the market is giving you the apparent answer.

This is the best answer you could have given, lol.

I consider the 83 Traded as Strawberry's RC, and after all his numerous issues he of course still has a following like Gooden and Canseco...but it's certainly not the fan affection of Donnie Baseball.

Exactly. If Mattingly had a '83TT the '84s would be closer.

I ordered an uncut sheet of them in 1984, my only Nestle cards for quite some time. I either got really lucky or you could pick the one you wanted, bit think it was just luck. Pretty sure I was hoping for the Garvey sheet. My sheet had both Strawberry and Mattingly if I recall correctly. Still have it.

Ok, given that Strawberry has an 83TT and Mattingly doesn't, the 84T Strawberry typically sells for around $5 raw and the 84T Mattingly sells for around $10 raw, maybe a bit higher. Not a huge difference there and certainly not a 10X difference like the Nestle card, that is my point.

Because the number of Mattingly player collectors likely dwarfs the number of Strawberry player collectors.
