First July Pick-ups

I've wanted one of these for years and was able to acquire this example for a terrific price on ebay. This image is actual size.

I needed this pin to complete my Tinker to Evers to Chance collection. Again, I was very pleased with the hammer price on ebay. I'm going to mount the three in a frame with a nice background. I'll post the finished product later.

Harvard tankard

Mike, Nice p/u on the tankard...I have an uncomplete set. If yours is the same one I saw on eBay like last week, I had it in my watch list but it got out of hand... Recently I just read something that made me realize the pitcher and mugs/tankards were essentially for beer...I never thought too much about it...I just knew they are nice looking...I never thoujght too much about what kind ov beverage they were used for....Greg T. may know if they were for beer

mjkm90 07-03-2009 11:28 AM

It was on ebay Carlton, but for $177 it wasn't out of hand IMO.

As for the use of these mugs, let's think about that scientifically. Harvard boys from wealthy families + no drinking age back in the day + tankards = beer drinking out the wazoo. There...that proves it...they are for beer.

PCL Broadside

It's not a really new pick-up but I thought I'd post it this month. Saturday, February 25th fell in the years 1928, 1933, and 1939. It may be impossible but any thoughts on which year this might be? I thought that to a few advanced PCL collectors there may be a few clues to narrow it down for me. It's about 11" x 13 1/2"

Thanks,
Andy

Picked up this 1911 Denver Western League Champs pinback as a companion piece for my 1911 Lincoln v Denver panorama. The 1911 Denver team is considered to be one of the all time great minor league clubs.

Dan, that pinback is INCREDIBLE!!! Wouldn't you love to have one of those jerseys?

Thanks Mike...what is interesting is that the jersey on the pinback shows the grizzly bear, but on my panorama the jerseys are plain with just the "Denver" going down the center. So maybe they had different home jerseys or they made a change at some point during the season. I wonder if any of those jerseys have survived?

Brock, that humidor is awesome.

slidekellyslide 07-14-2009 07:20 PM

It may not look like much, but to me this is very exciting. I lost out on a similar cover about 5-6 years ago and have regretted that ever since then. It's also my first Nebraska Indians pickup in close to a year.

Thanks fellas! This one was a lucky find....seller didn't know it was baseball so it didn't show up in one of my daily searches. Just happened upon it in a search that I rarely do anymore.

DiMaggio's Yacht Club Sign 57 1/2" wide x 26" tall

57 1/2" wide x 26" tall
I was walking toward the Berkeley Bart station (Bay Area Rapid Transit) flea market late today and saw an interesting antiques store. I recognized the dealer who I see at the Alameda Point show, who always has good interesting antiques. His shop had his regular good quality, but no sports stuff....that is until I looked up and saw this sign...It was pricey but I don't ever expect to see another so got it.

Wow, four thumbs up! Thanks guys. Now that I'm getting into this, it seems as though JD had two establishments, this Yacht Club, which appears to be kind of a night spot type place, then there was his Joe DiMaggio's Grotto seen over on this thread http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...?t=114028Which may have been just for eating, no floor show and dancing. If so he probably would have been influenced by Toot's Shor's in NYC, and tried to put something like it out in San Francisco....no telling if it worked, i. e. was successful. I'll be keeping my eyes open for info on the two places to better understand them. Below is an old snapshot of one of DiMaggio's concerns, that Sam and Stella Quaglierini had at the 06' National, seen on this page http://sportsantiques.com/06natpage4.htm. There is even a DiMaggio's cafe in Martinez Ca. , but Somehow I think it may have been owned by one of Joe's relatives.

Shawn, I'm on the road marching toward the National but wanted to say thanks for that Variety Magazine clipping..it's very enlightening. Gotta hit the hay but get this....picked up a Spalding ring bat today with a black label for....drum roll please....$10.00!!!!!!!!...I went to a lame outdoor so called Antique Fest in Syracuse..Liverpool NY actually, right by Syracuse....it had been raining before I got there and these guys were selling lots of junky radios and stuff....under a big tent...and I spotted the bat ON THE GROUND/GRASS WET on the edge of the covered area....It's in somewhat ruff shape but you can read the Spalding label pretty well...film at 11 -C

That's a beauty, Jimmy! It looks like it came from the group "lot of four" that was in Lelands a few weeks ago. Do you know if the person who won that group lot has sold/is selling any of the others? I almost went after that grouping. It is always interesting to see what happens with these multiple group lots after they are broken down and redistributed.

I was looking at a 4 year-old REA catalogue today, and saw about 6 pieces that I now own (which originally were included in various group lots from REA). It is funny how some of this stuff keeps recirculating, and some is never seen again. Yours is definitely a "keeper"!

Cubbies

I purchased these tins and c1930 paperweight as a poorly listed lot on ebay and am thrilled that I can check this Cubs figural off my want list. The tins are a bit rough, but I consider them a freebie throw in with my purchase:D

The circular Chicago Cubs tin reminds me of the most surreal antique buying trip in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Maine about 10 years ago. After having spent several summers not finding anything much in Nova Scotia, we started on a trip to Maine, stopping at antique stores along the way as a plan.

The first two stores--bam--the Chicago Cubs tin in each store. By the time we hit southern Maine a week later, I had found 8 of these tins -- and not much of anything else baseball.

HiNeighbor 07-27-2009 06:48 AM

Just got this in the mail today...it's a circa 1890s cabinet photo of the Ames Avenue Omaha street Railway team. Couldn't fit the whole thing on my scanner.
Marsh was a prominent Omaha photographer whose photos appeared in Harpers.
