1976 Kellogg’s odd variation

I know that there are many Kellogg’s variations depending upon the year but I came across one I have never seen before and was curious if anyone has ever seen this. The card is a ‘76 Greg Gross #56, which has a known variation on games played but this is a different one. Look at the back of the card just to the left of Greg’s photo. What is that? I’ve checked all of other ‘76’s and did some research and can’t find anything like it. I thought it was just an artifact but the circle is perfectly round. It looks like it belongs there. Anyone have an idea of what this is? I’ve included a close up too.

Could be a recurring print defect due to a problem during the printing process.

That has to be it. Just so bizarre.

Speaking of 1976 Kellogg’s variations, there are a few that I and a couple of advanced Kellogg’s collectors that I have talked to have never seen, the rarer Greg Gross, Jim Kaat, and Frank Tanana, and I’ll throw in the 1977 Bostock. ETA, I would have included the 1976 Orta and the 1977 Garland but I have seen one copy of each but they were both trashed. I’ve never seen a 1976 Rivers but I think one of those collectors told me that they had one.

Cliff, I only collect Orioles and the 1977 Garland is tough. The only one I've seen had a crack, but I grabbed it anyway.

Cliff, in the ‘76 set, which is the roster of the variation on Orta. Also, I didn’t know there was variation on Rivers in the ‘76, do you mind sharing what it is and what’s the rarer of the two. I’m more about complete sets and conditions, and need to check these two cards to what I have. Love learning about this stuff. Thanks in advance!

Darn autocorrect. “Rarer” was the word I was looking for...

Three of the Variations - Gross, Rivers and Tanana

I think I have the other ones mentioned. I will post the pictures when I find them. Maybe I'll have free time around Halloween.

The Gross has a different number of games. The Rivers has an added line about his trade to the Yankees. Oddly, the card back on both has the Yankees logo. The Tanana has two different ERAs for 1975.

Holy smokes! That leaves only the 76 Kaat back White Sox emblem and the 77 Bostock back wrong photo. ETA, the correct 76 Orta has 1616 career at bats, the error card has 1615 career at bats. One sold on COMC at some point, I wish I had seen it but I bet it sold immediately.

Other Variations

I will post the others when I find them. Have you seen the 1976 Pete Rose variation? Sorry for the poor image. On the first card, Cincinnati is spelled wrong - there is an extra letter and the NL designation is shifted over as a result.

PSA doesn't recognize this at all.

These are great. I’ve nearly got all Kellogg’s sets completed and am just now starting to delve into the variations. Wondering how many I may have missed when I sold cracked ones to upgrade. My weekend project.

When I found out about the uncataloged 76 Kellogg's Rose error (5-7 years ago?) I looked for it heavily and bought every one I could find, but I soon realized that it was relatively common when compared to the other aforementioned 76 and 77 Kellogg's variations and the ones that I had were exploding soon after I got them. I've had to give up on looking for Kellogg's cards because I was spending quite a bit on rare ones and then having them crack in a million pieces, all I was doing was depleting a dwindling supply of them.

This thread motivated me to search for my ‘76 Kellogg’s cards which weren’t in binders to see if I had any of these variations. Turns out I had both variations for Tanana and Orta. I included pics of my Orta cards, hopefully they are clear enough. thankfully both are in good shape and no cracks.

Cliff Bowman 10-07-2020 12:40 PM

There may not be much demand for them which would affect the value but I know from experience that both are very rare, I looked for both of them constantly for a number of years and could never find copies of either one other than an exploded Orta in an expensive lot that I passed on.

Yes I’m sure someone out there probably appreciates these variations more than I do. I’m Working on completing all the sets with cards in good shape and the variations are something I’ve only recently come to appreciate. I’ll look for some serious Kellogg’s collector who may want to trade and I can these into hands which will appreciate them more. I’m still missing about 80-100 cards to complete all of my sets ‘70-‘83 so if anyone knows of a such a collector let me know! Thanks.
