card with the largest % increase?

I see many cards across many sports now reliably selling for multiples of what they sold for earlier in the year. What's the largest % increase you've noticed? And for what card? (There's a particular basketball card that I'm kicking myself for selling just before it quadrupled in value, but that's far from the sharpest increase I've seen since the start of the pandemic.)

icurnmedic 10-15-2020 09:25 AM

Increase

1948 Leaf Robinson seems to have had a sharp uptick. Not sure it is the most but it definitely gained value in a short time.

Leon 10-15-2020 09:43 AM

I paid 2139 for this 1 yr and 3 mos ago from ebay. These cards have gone up dramatically as well as the Goudey Ruths...and both are very plentiful mainstream cards.

I agree with this one. It has continued to go up over the last 6 months, though at the new level it seems like the higher values are starting to really be focused on the higher quality cards. If you look at the auctions this last weekend, lower grades were going for higher than off-center cards that carried a higher grade.

It also seems like the '33 Goudey Ruths have started to tick up, with PSA 1's clearing $3k for the more common versions.

I agree with the consensus below. I have seen the largest increase in Jackie's card.

Exhibitman 10-15-2020 10:45 AM

There are tons of examples. Check the prices on early Jackie Robinson cards. Nosebleed city. The Hank Aaron RC has skyrocketed as has the Jim Brown rookie.

Touch'EmAll 10-15-2020 10:53 AM

Couple days ago, Oct. 13th, a certain ebay auction business sold 6 of the '48 Jackie's. Like jeez, just when you think a scarce card then along comes a half dozen for sale ... on a single day. Demand obviously trumps supply.

swarmee 10-15-2020 11:11 AM

Panini Silver Prizm base cards for Lebron James and Mike Trout have to near the top. Exponential growth curve in a year.

Absolutely, those big numbers loosens the grip on cards like that for some, and for idiots like me, I grab it a little tighter, then put my PSA 4 Jackie in a coffee can under the bed.

GasHouseGang 10-15-2020 11:20 AM

Immediately after his death Kobe Bryant card prices spiked. Most of his cards have come down from their top prices and settled down some, but his top graded 1996 Topps Chrome has stayed around five times what it was back in December 2019.

Arazi4442 10-15-2020 11:49 AM

If you're talking all sports, some soccer has gone insane. The Panini rookies of Messi and Ronaldo have seen a 10x increase or more during this price spike. Some other non big 4 (Tyson, Owens, Pele, etc.) have jumped as well but nothing lose those two.

I think part of that was that PWCC had six 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinsons ending at the same time (four PSA and two SGC). I was more than thrilled to pick up the SGC 4 for $10,100 in this climate even while acknowledging that it is not well centered. If I had consigned that card I would have been extremely disappointed

The correct answer is probably some modern basketball card I've never heard of. But for vintage baseball I haven't seen another that jumped as much or as quickly as the 48 Robinson.

You def got about the nicest card possible for the price in this market. It seems like maybe grade 3-4 '48 Robinsons haven't increased at the same rate as the bottom tier or upper tier.

The growing "gotta have the card" aspect has really made the lowest grade superstar key cards do well in the last couple years. People would rather spend 8 k for something that's been through a washing machine than 11 k for your card.

Could never agree on that, but whatever floats their boat

D. Bergin 10-15-2020 04:00 PM

Some of the early to mid 80's football key rookies I've been keeping track of have gone pretty crazy lately.

8's are going for what 9's used to go for, 9's are going for what 10's used to go for, and 10's have gone to the moon.

In some cases it's even more pronounced.

Browns1981 10-15-2020 04:15 PM

Shane Bieber's 2018 Topps Update PSA 10 was a $20-30 dollar card in July. Going for about $200 give of take now for a two year old base paper card.

Exhibitman 10-15-2020 04:16 PM

I went to see about upgrading my 1952 T Robinson and was shocked to find the low grade cards are over a thousand dollars now. Guess I will hang onto my wreck of an example...

JollyElm 10-15-2020 04:22 PM

Take a look at what's been going on with Wilt Chamberlain cards. I'm not talking about the super pricey earlier ones, but just his 1974 Topps for this example. Any day of the week, the 1974 PSA 9 seemed to always go for a touch over $100, and earlier in the year I finally bought one when I had a lot of CC points to use. It's cool, because it shows (lists) him as a member of the ill-fated San Diego Conquistadors. The original price (including shipping) was $101.99, which was a tiny bit lower than other sellers.

Now take a look at the PSA 9 sales during the heart of the pandemic (the top of the list is the most recent sales price and the bottom is the 'oldest')...

$396.00
$295.00
$430.00
$449.00
$447.00
$410.00
$700.00
$295.84
$244.09
$229.00
$230.45
$299.00

Yowza!!!

And if you look at ebay, the listed BIN prices range from $575 to $999!!!

Yep, no '52 T Robinsons below 3000 on ebay lately.

Someone even bought all of Dean's....

LOL, prices have gone so crazy Dean's are a good deal. I just bought a Ted Williams from him because it was the best deal on eBay for the card.

jimjim 10-15-2020 05:45 PM

Lew Alcindor rookie and Bob Cousy rookies. I was holding out for nicely centered versions of a low to mid grade of each of these at the end of last year and beginning of this year. Now they are both way out of my price range. Missed the boat.

jakebeckleyoldeagleeye 10-15-2020 06:18 PM

I paid $1800.00 for my PSA 4 1951 Bowman Mantle 11 years ago and now I see them going for an average of $12,000.
Of course $1800 is like $2200 today.

Pretty sure this is probably the correct answers as their percentage increases destroy all the others mentioned this far.

JollyElm 10-15-2020 08:04 PM

You know how people wish they had a time machine so they could go back to 1909 or 1910 and grab up some Wagners, Cobbs, etc.? These days, I wish I had a time machine that just took me back to April 2020!!!!

nat 10-15-2020 10:11 PM

The question was about the largest % increase. The answer is probably not a very expensive card, just because an expensive card has to increase in value a lot more than an inexpensive one does to cover the same percentage increase. It's probably a card of some modern rookie who had a good year, that was selling for a nickel in April and goes for $10 now.

Redleg25 10-16-2020 05:19 AM

Check out 1981 Topps Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. PSA 10S went from $900 at the beginning of the year to over $10k!

1950s baseball ROI in '19 and '20

Great subject! 31% ROI YoY avg for 1950s baseball card sales in '19, and 50% ROI YoY for sales in '20. Examples below. How does this compare to your acquisitions and sales?

53 Topps Mick AA: 95%
52 Bowman Mick 1: 84%
52 Bowman Mays 2: 60%
53 Topps Mays raw: 49%
53 Bowman Mick raw: 43%
55 Topps Jackie raw: 41%
55 Topps Aaron raw: 40%
56 Topps Clemente raw: 29%
52 Topps Mays 1: 19%
52 Topps Reese 1.5: 18%
55 Topps Robinson 2: 15%
55 Topps Mays 4: 15%
52 Topps Mays 1 MK: 11%

Frank A 10-16-2020 05:44 AM

Almost all Mickey Mantle cards have doubled in price since January. Some have tripled in price.

LOL, I've gotta thank you. You sold me my Lawrence Taylor PSA9 earlier this year that has gone up almost 8 fold since then.

Also, you sold me a Willie Randolph Rookie that has quadrupled since then, for god knows what reason.

Has anything NOT gone up?

I had been keeping an eye out for a nice PSA9 Ron Guidry rookie for awhile, but I'm too late to the party. I can't bring myself to pay over $200 bucks for a guy who had a nice run, but isn't close to a HOF'er. Will have to settle for an 8 if I want Guidry.

A lot of the culty, non HOF'er guys have seen big jumps. Out of curiosity I looked up Mark Fidrych's Rookie, and 10's have been selling for over $1000, 9's for $250+ and 8's for around $100 bucks.

Also big jumps in borderline guys like Lou Whitaker, Bobby Grich, Don Mattingly, etc....

Whitaker and Grich are well above HOF standard at 2B...maybe people figure the era committee will elect them at some point.

Mattingly...maybe all us 80’s kids getting nostalgic?

jakebeckleyoldeagleeye 10-16-2020 01:40 PM

As for autograph fees Simmons went from $25-30 before HOF selection and now you have to pay $69.

About time to pull the trigger on this one. All it has to do is go up about 200 times in value, and it's gonna be a deal

Most painful "miss" for me. I kept waiting for the right time/card. Woops! I'll never own a really nice copy now. I have a short list of cards I wanted to add and they're all way out of my range now. Actually, collecting graded cards is over for me, it appears.

I agree with this statement. Alcindor and Cousy rookies for me. Although it’s getting harder to find ungraded cards. All the decent ones listed on eBay get snapped up by people that are planning on sending them in to be graded since it now is a big money grab. Kinda takes the joy out of collecting for me.

My error on the Bird/Johnson card occurred almost 40 years ago, when I decided that Bird and Johnson each should have their own card.
