REA May Auction: Observations, Wins?

Wondering how you all did in last nights REA auction Any observations/thoughts?

I came away with only 1 win, a T206 PSA 5 Elberfeld, NY., but stayed within a budget this time around. A few months ago, I would have bid on more cards.

Also noticed that most of the individual lots were closed & won after the initial 10 minute overtime.

ullmandds 05-23-2022 01:04 PM

I observed that my consignments sold quite lower than I'd hoped.

parkplace33 05-23-2022 01:13 PM

Not the normal caliber of items, but I thought prewar was down. I was surprised at the BVG Red Cobb price. I get it is a BVG, but still.

3-2-count 05-23-2022 01:18 PM

I won (1) item which did not go cheap.

Story of my life! ;)

jsfriedm 05-23-2022 01:44 PM

Prices definitely calming down (except for that inexplicable 1953 Bowman Mantle), including pre-war. T205 SGC 4.5 Speaker went for $1260, they sold one in January for $2040. Plenty more examples. Was surprised on the prices of the T206 Cobbs as well.

So many auctions. . . . it's like being on the beach in Miami . . . after a while you stop turning around and looking all day long . . .

+1. I didn't see much that interested me in this one, and coupled with somewhat of a bad taste left in my mouth after the last REA auction mess, I turned my attention elsewhere.

boneheadandrube 05-23-2022 02:25 PM

T206's were strong as usual.

I added some T205s to my set. Now at 144/208

Exhibitman 05-23-2022 02:30 PM

My consignment went far better than I expected. Like, 'I am ecstatic today' better.

I was shut out of every prewar HOFer I wanted. And I bid far above what I would ever have expected to bid on some of them.

Lower grade slabbed commons are definitely not doing well. Except, of course, the T206 portraits I wanted.

Signed vintage is hot. Really hot. White-hot.

Tougher back T206s, well, I consigned one and it vastly exceeded my expectations.

molenick 05-23-2022 02:35 PM

I think some of it is the number of auctions and some of it is the same cards appearing in each auction. If you know there are going to be 500 T206s in every auction, then you would think at some point "fear of missing out" turns into "why not wait". I think the rarer cards (by condition or overall scarcity) are still getting good prices but I don't see how cards that are relatively common can keep rising in price.

Edited to add: this is not specifically about T206s...just about cards that come up for auction fairly regularly, of which T206s are an example. Also, since I don't buy or sell T206s, I can't really comment on whether the prices were strong or not.

Casey2296 05-23-2022 02:58 PM

I love seeing the abundance of offerings, I filled some postwar holes in Heritage but nothing in REA (congrats to the winner of the SGC Walsh portrait). I'm watching the market for a bit saving for a couple of bigger purchases, its nice to see segments come back down out of the stratosphere but of course the rare stuff is holding strong and there still a lot of new money chasing the hi grade slabs.

Republicaninmass 05-23-2022 03:24 PM

Same exactly signed Berk Ross Cousy rc sold

12/5/2021$1,740.00 REA

Sold last night for 1500 REA

I bet it went to some astute collector for their pc.

Likley to "change direction" and sell in 6 months.

Pretty strange

Bridwell 05-23-2022 03:41 PM

Rea

I was tracking 20 items and bid on 15. Won 2. Really none of the 20 items went sky high. The 2 items I won were going below prior sales.

babraham 05-23-2022 03:41 PM

Won a handful of T206 to add to the collection, as well as a 55 Bowman Mantle.
I'm happy with my haul.

BobbyStrawberry 05-23-2022 03:45 PM

I didn't win anything, but some of the items I bid on went for surprisingly low prices.

walker066 05-23-2022 04:07 PM

Only won pre-war card t202 Hassan Speaker.

Thought I was in a good position on the 1955 Topps Jackie Robinson psa 4. I will say that I’m not the biggest fan of the midnight then 10 minutes per lot rule. It’s hard for me on the East Coast to stay up that late and try to snag a last minute bid on the cards I’m bidding on. Yes, I could bid higher, but I still like to be in it until the end.

mrreality68 05-23-2022 04:13 PM

It was a nice auction but many of the same cards were in this as I see in others. Overall the prices were not as strong as I would have thought. Some cards surprised me like the 1915 CJ Joe Jackson poor (with the slight tear near his shoulders) sold for $15K higher than I thought.
On the other hand the Topps PSA 3 Mantle went for less than I thought and the poor condition 1 actually had a nicer look and sold strong.

Auction Fatigue and budget restraints slow many of us down on auctions. Think about it we just had a really nice Memory Lane Auction, we had a Goldin Auction, and a Heritage Auction all end in last week or So and now we have others started like Lelands and SCP.

iwantitiwinit 05-23-2022 04:38 PM

I focused primarily on the T206's and as others said the majority of the offerings had common backs so pricing wasn't phenomenal. I won 2 items at reasonable prices but missed on the Broadleaf 460 (I was the underbidder) and was a bit surprised that card did not bring more than the $3200 final bid. The few other t206's with off backs I felt did well price wise.

wolf441 05-23-2022 04:54 PM

Happy to have won the T202 Speaker/Wood and surprised that my high bid held up for the last week plus of the auction.

I don't think the auction calendar was any more full this time a year than it has been in other times when we had one massive auction after another. In the last couple of years the appetite for cards has been unprecedented. Everything was selling and selling at strong prices.

I think the prices being down are a reflection of prices being down because there are either fewer buyers or fewer buyers feeling like they can or have to pay up. I don't think it suggests the market is tanking but it has definitely started to correct. Much more of a buyer's market then it has been in the last couple of years.

Carter08 05-23-2022 05:14 PM

A nice e121 Hornsby went for a bunch less than I would have thought. Sadly I fell asleep.

Very happy with the Parent. perhaps overpaid.

Felt like the price on the Devore was right. registration isn't great...

Jewish-collector 05-23-2022 05:29 PM

Can somebody please explain to me how the hell you all keep track of every single vintage baseball card auction ?

By not paying much attention to my wife and kids

I kid!

I definitely don't keep track of all of them, but for the 12 or so that I do watch, I've started using a method that I recently saw mentioned here on net54. If you have a bookmarks folder in your browser for the auction sites, rename each bookmark with a prefix for the date of the next auction and place them in chronological order. For example...

0512 Heritage
0512 Sterling
0522 REA
0525 Hunt

etc. It requires some editing and moving around the bookmarks every few weeks, but overall it's not too cumbersome and makes it easy to see what's coming up.

+1 for Auction Report

wondo 05-23-2022 06:41 PM

My consignment of a SGC 2 53T Mantle went a bit more than expected. Not a mind blowing card, but a nice example of the Mick.

I use Auction Report as well, but that’s only as a supplement to my spreadsheet where I have each AH listed and the dates of each auction. That way I don’t miss any. I highlight ones where I have something I’m bidding on vs those where I’m just watching stuff to learn/document values.

puckpaul 05-23-2022 07:47 PM

I bid on nothing, thought it was one of their weaker auctions and I think that probably contributed to the lesser interest and bidding on some. Doesn’t mean much.

On the other hand, anyone see the prices on those psa 8 nm-mt 33 goudeys in the other auction?? Wow. $65k for Andy Cohen? Went for $26k a few months ago?

It was just one of their monthly auctions not one of their bigger quarterly auctions. The prices on those Giudeys is incredible.

jamest206 05-23-2022 09:15 PM

Focused on the T206 Ames hands at chest Piedmont 150 and won it. Have my raw for sale on site now.

Who the hell is Andy Cohen?

I had to look him up. Is he the guy who played 3 years in the 1920's? Why does he have card and not Cobb?

I hope they fired the idiot who made that decision back in 1933.

I think you delivered breaking news here. Reading these comments, my guess is that half of the posters were unaware of this key fact.

LEHR 05-24-2022 08:05 AM

I placed 4-5 placeholder bids on day one but didn't pursue anything after that. After seeing the same cards over and over and over again for 40 years I've pretty much burnt out on collecting cards and am only buying sports memorabilia and photography now. Looking forward to the next REA catalog auction which I'm sure will have a more diverse offering.

Hardly. We all know that. It’s of marginal interest because of that.

So much for a card having to have decent centering to bring a huge premium.

I sure hope one day prices will soften so I can buy something.

Bobsbats 05-24-2022 04:43 PM

Picked up a T202 Breshnahan SGC 55 for what I thought was real good price.
