Let's See Some Awesome Boxing Card Sets!

Just like the other thread Adam started, how about posting some of your boxing sets, old or new. I don't have many, but I acquired the complete T218 set. I'll just show the overall set picture and then the boxing portion, since their are other areas of interest like track and field, aviation, and billiards represented.

G1911 05-18-2021 05:52 PM

Very cool set David! Always loving seeing T218

This photo montage shows all of the Benham Indian Publishing Co.'s Jim Jeffries cards, though there are multiple printing variations on the card of the bar. The top right is my favorite--It shows Jeff at work on his farm in Burbank, California, where I've had my office for 20+ years.

An uncut sheet of the 1940s Coney Island Arcade boxing cards. This is how they were distributed. Rare in any form.

Turkey Reds were my boxing white whale for many years. I even gave up on them for a while. I found this set several years ago and pulled the damn trigger. Pretty happy with them!

G1911 05-18-2021 09:40 PM

Can't beat Turkey Red's for pure aesthetics.

GasHouseGang 05-18-2021 10:55 PM

Those are beautiful Jerry! I like that uncut sheet of the 1940s Coney Island Arcade boxing cards Adam. Especially since it has Sullivan right in the middle!

One 'ol Cat 05-19-2021 09:02 AM

Jerry, seeing them displayed like that. Simply awesome!

I don't own this, but would this be a set of cards if you had the ones on the poster? I'm not sure what set this is.

Exhibitman 05-20-2021 04:03 PM

There is no known set that conforms to that poster.

1955-56 Topps Hocus Focus boxing subset, with one small flaw...see if you can spot it.

I’ve certainly never seen these. Can I ask where it came from, if it’s source is known? If period, that would be one cool set of cards possibly out there somewhere. Looks great

Really? That's surprising. I downloaded that picture off some auction catalog, somewhere. I did a search and found it. Two versions have been auctioned by REA. Once in the Spring 2013 catalog it sold for $8295, and then another version was auctioned in the Fall of 2016 catalog and sold for $9600. I was hoping the set existed. Well, I'm pretty sure this set exists.

Thanks for pointing that out, Cat. That might be the first time that I laid them out like that. I have always studied them individually.

Great looking set Brent. Here's my E76 set. Not especially rare, but colorful.

Exhibitman 05-21-2021 12:29 PM

Damn, Brent, wow.

This is a 1927 or slightly later set of transfers issued by a German company commemorating the Dempsey-Tunney "Long Count" title fight.

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...er%20sheet.jpg

I like the way they flow in the full sheet format, and the two-stamp long count.

I'm very impressed with the condition of your set, David. Most of the E76s that I run across are beat to snot. These look nice across the board.

Also, I think I like the Khedivial poster better than the individual cards.

Exhibitman 05-21-2021 04:16 PM

The posters are great but really hard to fit into albums...unless you cut them up. Which people have done.

Here is the 1919 IFS Moser set of Dempsey-Willard cards. They were made as postcards as well as blank backed photo cards. Took me a while to put together a run of the blank backs.

Thanks Jerry. These will have to do until someone makes a Black Swamp type of find of caramel boxers. I like the posters too, but I think I still prefer the cards.

Are these two together a set? These two cards have the same signature on the front, and back that discusses his record. I blew up the back so you could read it. There may be another pose available, but I'm not sure.

Exhibitman 05-25-2021 05:15 PM

The assumption on those is that they were souvenirs from JLS's many performances and appearances. He sold a lot of "merch". I guess you could call them a set.

My favorite 'set' is the H815 Adam Hats premiums. Why? I dunno, I just like 'em

1922 Sporting Champions

Over on the baseball side of net54baseball, it's not unusual to have passionate debates about when a particular set of pre-war cards was issued. That is not the case with this multi-sport set. These cards were issued weekly. Each individual card has an issue date printed on the back; month, day and year! In addition, it will tell you what card will be issued next week.

The long ago forgotten ebay seller told me that the boxing set was complete at 15 pugilists. I guess I believe him. The first 13 cards are numbered between 1 and 20. The remaining two are numbered 42 and 59. Card #1 was issued on Jan 28th 1922. Card #59 was issued on March 10th 1923 and proclaims that next weeks card will be "Another famous footballer, F. Walden." So, no idea how many total cards.

Based on these card backs, other sports represented were football (soccer), cricket and swimming. Actually, I have a swimmer card of a guy that looks like a heavyweight boxer! Maybe my seller confused him for a boxer and included him.

Compared to baseball cards issued of the time period, the photo quality is pretty nice.

Exhibitman 06-09-2021 07:43 PM

Yeah, I love the UK news issues with the dates right on them.

My favorite 19th century set is N269

Adam, that was some great timing on your N269 Lorillard's post. Just yesterday, I watched a show on the Discovery Channel called Blood Feuds. Season 1, Episode 1 was all about Bill Poole and John Morrissey. Believe it or not, the show followed along with the back of he cards. The cards and the show are awesome!

Episode 2 is about the Hatfields and the McCoys. Looking forward to that.
