The All Underrated Team
I found it too negative to call players overrated and had a tough time even coming up with names (outside of Jeter and Anson, yes Anson. Not even the best 1B of the 19th century - see Brouthers, Dan).
I can, however, come up with a list of underrated players all day long. Let's see your All Underrated Team! SP - Tom Glavine - Overshadowed by Maddux and Smoltz for most of his impressive career. C - Charlie Bennett - The best defensive catcher of the 19th century by a long shot! 1B - John Olerud - One of the best pure hitters of the 90's, but didn't get the recognition because he wasn't a power hitter. 2B - Jeff Kent - Got caught up in the whirlwind that is Bonds and it's almost a footnote that he is the all time leader in HR for 2B. SS - Barry Larkin - Better than Jeter and gets half the respect. 3B - Robin Ventura - Getting beat up by a 46 year old when you are 26 doesn't help, but Ventura was crazy good. LF - Ralph Kiner - There are a lot of what-ifs with Kiner due to his injury shortened career, but during his brief run he was absolutely dominant! CF - Kenny Lofton - The man is a HOFer, and it's not even close. RF - Bobby Abreu - Speed and power. Very underrated and a top 20 all time RF in my opinion. |
Nice list... now I think we need a "properly rated" team thread...

Most underrated Hofer at each position since the other thread was non Hofers.
P Sandy Koufax C Roy Campanella 1b Johnny Mize 2b Bill Mazeroski SS Arky Vaughan 3b Pie Traynor LF Ralph Kiner CF Kirby Puckett RF Roberto Clemente |
Oy we now have two all underrated threads.
|
If we are making this the All Underrated Hall of Famer list (sorry if we are hijacking the thread) then:
P: Pete Alexander C: Gary Carter 1B: Johnny Mize 2nd: Eddie Collins SS: Arky Vaughn 3B: Wade Boggs LF: Tim Raines CF: Tris Speaker RF: Mel Ott There are some real close ones: Al Simmons in LF, Larry Doby in CF, Al Kaline in RF to name a few. |
