May Pickups

Jason finished up a fantastic April Pickups thread with this post of his Aaron collection.

Since it's May, I'll kick it off with one that technically arrived last week, but just got a chance to scan it. Not the best centered Bird, but the image and surface are so nice on this one. I wonder if the blurry, large policeman in the background knows he's been immortalized on a baseball card.

Some Rookie Pick-Ups from the White Plains Show today...

Todd, a very nice haul of rookie pickups to start the month congrats.

CW, that Fidrych card is a classic and yours looks great (clarity/focus). I need to add one to my collection. Thanks for sharing.

DanP 05-03-2015 06:09 AM

Todd, wow... nice job! Congratulations.

People in the background

Interesting thought Chuck. Wonder how many folks have identified themselves or someone they know if the background of a card. Your cop and the guy in the LaRussa card would be examples. Wonder if anyone ever identified the guy airbrushed in the 57 Mantle card? Another good one would be the 65 card that says it shows Mantle hitting a home runoff Barney Schultz in the 64 WS, but really shows him missing a Gibson fastball. That picture appeared in a lot of papers and a lot of fans behind home plate are in the picture.

That Koosman rookie card is stunning :-)

I just picked up a nice lot of signed 1953 Bowman cards. They came from the original owner, who had the foresight to mail away for the autographs back in 1953, and mount them with photo corners in an album soon afterwards, where they remained until a couple weeks ago. Here are just a few of them. If ever there was a set that looked great signed, it's the '53 Bowmans ...

kailes2872 05-03-2015 12:57 PM

What a great looking signed lot! Nothing on the card to compete with (signatures when there a facimile autos on the page can be a tad distracting). They looked like mini signed photos.

Iwantmorecards77 05-03-2015 04:12 PM

Thanks, guys. Good start to the month for sure.

Those signed 53's are sharp!

...and the Bird is on my radar too! Nice card.

few more aarons to the collection:

not the best mantle rook, few issues but decently centered, snagged from steve at bbce and it was one of those situations that the price was so good, I couldn't walk away...

and plan on resubbing her for a grade in a red flip...

Got these in the mail today. Trivia Question - what is the common thread between these cards? Hint - I'm still waiting on a 1957 Don Gross.

jason.1969 05-04-2015 03:56 PM

I see they are all pitchers!

Correct, but what else?

jason.1969 05-04-2015 03:58 PM

Ah, just got it! But I will leave the fun to others since you just posted!

JollyElm 05-04-2015 04:09 PM

I know Hank Aaron hit his first homer off of Vic Raschi, and everyone knows Al Downing's role in April of '74, so my guess would be they all gave up numerically significant home runs to Hammerin' Hank??

jason.1969 05-04-2015 04:35 PM

Always dependable to break up the nice run of baseball cards with some ephemera, here is my latest 1952 Topps Look N See. To go with our Newton display, my boy and I are also building a Great Physicists display that had a little too much white space.

+1. I know Hank hit #500 off Mike McCormick. I think his last was hit off of Drago.

Correct
Raschi #1
Gross #100
Kline #200
Craig #300
Belinsky #400
McCormick #500
Jackson #537 (passes Mantle)
Simpson 3000'th hit (I know, not a home run)
Perry #600
Twitchell #649 (passes Mays)
Brett #700
Billingham #714 (ties Ruth)
Downing #715 (passes Ruth)
Drago #755 (last HR)
I'm planning on doing some sort of display of other players significant to Hank Aaron. I'm also planning to use Jim Bunning (Hank's only inside the park HR), Mike Lum (first player to pinch hit for Hank), and Lindy McDaniel (Hank's only walk off grand slam). I tried to get players' cards from the year when the events occurred.

CW 05-04-2015 06:16 PM

That's a cool collecting theme ^^^, Robert!

Great cards in this thread, guys, and thanks for the comments on the new Bird. Everyone should have one. :)

I hear ya, Al. You could include the folks in the stands on the '56 Mantle, too (some even twice!). I know Topps has had a promotion where you could have your own card, but I'm surprised they haven't held a promotion where you could be in the background of a MLB player's card. ;)

I think that aaron/pitcher milestone collection is a very cool concept and idea! kudos.

Re: Aaron milestones...what about 1974 Tom House?

begsu1013 05-04-2015 07:48 PM

he was A pitcher, but for the braves and caught the ball, right?

ironically enough, admitted to using anabolic steroids as well....

I definitely think it should be added though. good call, Jason!

Late to the already impressive May jam, but bringing some good liquor...

Pic is of Ted signing that same actual card. I am never one for autos but the insane provenance of this one just really moved me. Should be in hand soon. Beyond grateful to the gentleman who made it possible. Plus some nice buns in the BG!

I just love the Joe Torre 1962 RC. One of my all time favorite cards. The pose, the glove, the trophy, it all comes together. He also was a heck of a player. His 71 season was one for the ages. Just a name so synonymous with baseball. Recently grabbed one myself and hope to take a good scan today. Gorgeous card and the Tommy John, too, is especially nice. A TJ card is really essential for a collection that tells the story of the game, considering his career and the eponymous surgery.

Thanks! Definitely was looking to get these two for awhile and finally was able to grab two nice examples for a good price. Nice to get these off the list and into the collection!

Didn't realize how much I love the look of the 56 Mantle until I finally got one in person for my PC. I absolutely love it and plan to eventually pick up a double. Glad to finally cross this one off my list. Also added another 66 Mantle from the REA auction didn't think my bid would hold up, but not going to complain!

Great Mantles! The 1956 is one of very few cards I enjoy having doubles (or more) of.

Bestdj777 05-10-2015 09:41 PM

I already had a copy of the 66, but the front of this one was incredibly clean and I wanted to see whether I could remove the scrapbook paper from the back (thoughts?) and upgrade the PSA 2 I have in my collection. One of the two will be for sale soon if there is any interest.

The 68 was one of three cards I was still looking for before I consider my collection complete. The back is perfectly clean.

Chris, congrats on getting your '68 Venezuelan Mantle! Know you've been looking for awhile. Trying to find someplace where you could improve either card with a little touch-up but not having much luck. Guess you can put your markers down. :p

A couple of nice Mantles you have picked. I would love to add a 56 Mantle to my collection. I will at some point. Congrats. Until then I will continue to work on my Willie Mays run. Never sure how the centering on the 70's work but I thought this one looked pretty good. Here is my latest.
