Are you buying, selling or just waiting?

Posted By: Bob
Just curious to see who is doing what right now. I know that for the present time I have quit selling and am waiting to see what card prices do in the coming months. I am still buying although my purchases have been of cards that I am focused on rather than just cards which I like, but don't necessary collect, but which are selling for good prices.
Anyone else?

Posted By: MVSNYC
i am in the process of selling many cards...looking to raise funds and also streamline/re-focus. the only items i'm buying now (in moderation) are game used bats. there was such a long period of time, when i was spending like a drunken sailor, buying way too much...those days are behind me.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
From the looks of the new Mastro catalog I'd say it appears to be business as usual. Consigners are not shying away from selling. Lots of great stuff too..looks to be one of their better Classics in a while.

Posted By: Anonymous
Been buying a few more T206s than normal due to some good prices. I have consigned my 1st item to Mastro to be sold in the October Classic Collector auction. Been quite a while since I sold anything on eBay or BST.

Posted By: Anonymous
Had switched to non-sports to allow the dollars to go further. Have noticed that there seems to be more ebay items recently, and some that you usually don't see (like the run of exhibit cards recently), which indicates that at least some folks are selling. Non sports I've bought a little more recently as there seems to be just a few less bidders than usual.

If things go really downhill and I'm still employed then I'd pick up on buying cards I had given up on the past two years.
Posted By: Mark
Business as usual on both ends.

And I agree with Dan B... Mastro's current auction appears to have as good (or better) offerings as any "Collector" Auction in recent memory. This one will provide a good test for how prices are holding up. The low prices Masro realized in their last two events were blamed (by many) on the poor/lower-end assortment of items.

Posted By: Iggy
Business as usual in regards to buying and selling. So far, I haven't seen much of a drop in the lower grade pre-war stuff I buy and sell. However, I was a little bit disappointed with some of the postwar cards I recently put on ebay, in particular the Mantle cards. Of course, it was a small sample size.

Lovely Day...

Are you buying, selling or just waiting?

Posted By: David Poses
I've been selling stuff I shouldn't have bought in the first place (don't care if its at a loss- this is a hobby) and have been buying stuff which either (a) fits into my focus of early T/E Highlanders cards, or (b) is from my side project (1950,51,52) Bowman sets.

The question of how the economy is affecting our hobby is an interesting one. I think that in some instances, there are big bargains out there- as we all know- it takes only two people to make a card go through the roof in an auction. In the absence of that pesky second person, the first person can get a steal more often now than, say, 6 months ago.

Last night I won a T207 Wolverton PSA 4. Over the past few months, I've been trying to pick up T207 Highlanders and with very few exception, those cards in similar condition have gone for close to, if not more than, $100. A few weejs ago, an SGC 60 T207 Vaughn sold for $319. A few days later I bought a different SGC 60 Vaughn (looks exactly the same) for $160). AS for last night's Wolverton, the hammer price was $44.00. Hmmmm....

(I hope I didn't just screw myself on the T207 Highlanders)
Posted By: steve
I went thru the Mastro catalog, and also thru the recent few major auction catalogs. I am looking for "nice for the grade" HOFers in PSA 5 and 6. Must be centered no worse than 60/40, preferrably better.

Tough to find these nowadays - not many at all on the market. Seems obvious to me most people are NOT selling T206 major HOFers in mid/high grades.

hmmm, steve.
Are you buying, selling or just waiting?

Posted By: Richard
No buying or selling going on here. I narrowed my focus a number of months back, and made some excellent progress early. Of 26 cards (all pre-1920 Toronto), I managed to pick-up 19. I still need 5 C46s and 2 OJs. If I see any of them, I'll surely at least bid, but I'm just not seeing much of anything. And as much as I look, I don't expect I'll ever see those two OJs.

In the mean time, I've expanded my focus to include another 50-60 cards from the 30's-60's, but am very casual about obtaining them. I also created a web site for my collection, and figured I could bide my time doing research on the team, players, owners, etc and post it to this site, but truthfully, I've just been far too busy.

Regards,

Richard.
