Pre War Cards W/Big Borders?

1 Attachment(s)
Will Pre War cards with larger borders command a premium in the future? Besides lower grade cards with nice aesthetics will the thing to look for be cards, known to be candidates for trimming, with larger borders? And will there be a premium in the future (or is there one now)?
.

samosa4u 08-08-2019 12:40 PM

With the number of trimmed cards out there, I'm surprised there are even big-bordered cards left!

brianp-beme 08-08-2019 01:03 PM

I have big bordered T206 cards that were trimmed poorly in the distant past (imagine how large they once were!). So I guess these cards need to be identified as big bordered cards with no trimming.

I would think that big borders might become a big thing for those in the know.

I have always chased large borders. I could see a premium attached in the future like centering has received.

I can also see pedigreed cards from the early pioneers gaining steam.

That's a great card. I have a question: are there wide discrepancies in the sizing for this set? Is that card larger than the standard 1-7/16 x 2-5/8 size for that set?

Nice cards everyone. Big borders are the bomb!

These borders seem a little bigger than normal. And the centering is nice....best fair grade card I have had in awhile..

Yes, the sizes are all over the place.
And I believe yes, that card is larger than standard.

I hope even poorly cut ones like this E220 card (and E220's in general) will increase a hundredfold in value, and then perhaps I will become a multi-kamillionaire.

That’s interesting. I have seen PSA reject cards for being too large. For example, when a card has been in a screw down.

I think cards with oversized borders will continue to be desirable especially from a doctors standpoint to the point that now and even more so in the future people will think cards have oversized borders when they’re really the way they were supposed to be .

There's been a lot of short high grade cards talked about recently...so I think these, with larger than average borders, are refreshing to see.

Also...the Proof is an honorable mention. :)

Leon-Why did the card get such a low grade? Is it the scratch like stuff in the red background? I can’t see much wrong with the card from the scan.

This one can use a little trim off the top.

Just realized that I should have posted a pre war card. Well, this was before the Vietnam War.

In answer to a question above, the red Cobby in a 1.5 older has a few spider wrinkles. They can barely be seen on the front and not on the back.

Here is another card with large borders.

Big-bordered cards are a staple in my collection and I've been trying to hunt those down for years! Here's a few favorites, notice if you look closely at the handcut Cobb and O'Halloran, you can see different colors on the edges that hint at what the card was actually cut off of originally. Good stuff!

These borders used to look "normal" to me.

After a few years of minimal hobby activity, I recently looked through my T206 cards. I was amazed at how large the borders appear to me now.
