June Autograph Pickups

I have been working over a year to pick up this autograph, Negro League great Vic Harris. Lead his teams to 8 negro league pennants.

That's very cool. I've never seen a Harris autograph. Admittedly, I don't collect autographs per se, but I do collect NL and other photos and come across a lot of signed copies, even if they are often out of my price range. Congrats!

I've been looking for one of these that would fit in with my 1955 Dodgers collection, and I think this fits the bill. A 2011 Heritage Jackie Robinson HOF election card beautifully signed by Rachel Robinson. Rachel was a huge part of Jackie's success IMHO, and she is also a recipient of the HOF 2014 Buck O'Neil award for baseball's lifetime achievement. I consider these award winners, the Spink award winners and the Frick award winners to be equally important as hall of famers, and as such have an important place in my collection.

My dad got this thin man photo signed ttm in about 1983 for my mom. Years later they divorced and I assumed she lost the photo. Today she found it and gave it to me. A super nice signed photo from one of my all-time favorite films.
Also got a super rare Bernard Herrmann autograph to help nearly complete my Citizen Kane cast and crew collection :)Attachment 462489

Made a very nice deal with Jim Stinson to pick up one of my favorite dead ball players who is also the subject of one of my favorite Kreindler paintings...Ken Williams

The painting is posted here in Graig's thread https://www.net54baseball.com/showpo...postcount=1123

Along with Cravath, it seems like Williams is in that unfortunate group who were held in very high regard by their contemporaries, fans and sportswriters but have mostly been forgotten to time. Guessing there will never be any phone calls coming from Cooperstown at this point.

Very true. Williams' biggest issue is that he lost a lot of his early years to various issues including ww1, so he did not have as many years of high performance as others, but he was the first 30-30 player in 1921 or 22, i think.
You never know though. Sometimes the vet committee does some corrections to add players who were previously under the radar. There are several dead ball era players, including Cravath, as well that people speak about quite frequently as being overlooked. I dont know all their names, but Smokey Joe Wood would also seem to be right there.

If they haven't put Joe Wood in yet, I really don't see it happening. I understand their reasoning, but I also like to argue his performance at the plate after he switched positions. It's too bad he couldn't have had a few more seasons at each position to seal the deal on how great he was. I'd be all for his induction, far more so than the two fellows already mentioned.

To me, TGOTT managed to get the wrong two players inducted! Nothing against Hooper or Marquard, but if forced to pick only two from a list of these four, I'd have cast my ballot for Wood and O'Doul.

Couple pick ups from this month. I'm happy I've been patient with the Bo Jackson rookie because they've finally come back to Earth after being so overpriced for so long.

Also very happy to pick up the Koufax. Thought I got a great deal on it:

Everything related to Bo should come down, including his signing price and his ego. We're all aware of the 30 year old hype, but let's face it--neither career lived up to potential.

To me, his closest contemporary was Eric Lindros, who was supposed to be the next Gretzky. He did manage to score over 500 goals in his career. More importantly, he made it into the HOF, something Bo never came close to doing in either sport. Lindros mellowed as he matured and has done some commendable philanthropic and charity work in more recent days. Nice to see him in this light.

I've always liked Bo for his mystique and I think that he WAS everything he was supposed to be, just not for as long as hoped. That's one thing I think that sets him apart from others like him. He did reach his potential (though it was fleeting) whereas others fail to live up theirs.

They certainly did get Goslin, right, at least.
