Cuban cards

Posted By: Wesley
There seems to be a lot of vintage collectors who pay large sums of money for Cuban cards. Can anyone explain to me the appeal of these cards?

This 1951 Toleteros Josh Gobson was discussed before. The seller is describing the card as the third most significant card behind only the T206 Wagner and the Baltimore Ruth. Is it really a $50000 card?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=57993&item=5164264 153&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Is a 1923 Tomas Gutierrez Pop Lloyd in VG condition really an $8000 card?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=57993&item=5163193 873&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Posted By: barrysloate
While it is true that some sellers of Cuban cards have delusions of grandeur, in some cases there are Hall of Famers that can only be found during their playing days in a Cuban issue: Pop Lloyd, Oscar Charleston, and a few others. That phenomenon has made sellers think that every Cuban card of a HOfer is priceless- perhaps true with an Aguilitas or Billiken of Pop Lloyd (or Sam, as he is also known) but not true of all Cuban cards. The buyer (and not the seller) ultimately is the judge.
