As this will be one of the premier shows in the country before the National, please report back on (1) attendance, and (2) sales and (3) interest. Is there an equal split between vintage and newer collectibles, as well as dealer booths focusing on vintage versus the last 30 years. Thanks.

of course it was from a similar vantage point (we are sharing a booth). The show was as packed as I've seen a show in a LONG time. Sales were great. 1 nice purchase and a couple of others being discussed. It was so busy, I didn't even get a chance to walk the room!!

Show was packed yesterday! Didn't see a lot of E candy cards for sale maybe 5 or 6 graded '14 CJs available and a few more graded and raw '15 CJs

I was at the show on Friday, and the crowd seemed like what is normally there on a Saturday. It will be interesting to hear what the weekend attendance was like from anyone who went Saturday or Sunday.

It seemed to me like the mix of dealers with vintage vs newer stuff was what is usually is in Philly so there was plenty of vintage available.

I had 5 graded '15's and 3 graded 14's sold all of the 15's in one group still have the 14's

Looking for Alexander, Wood, and Schalk if you have em.

Sorry just commons. Have a Bresnahan in the fall pre war auction. Will let you know if I stumble across any of your needs in the mean time.

Friday - vintage collector viewpoint
 

Someone gave out homework to report on the show. This was my first time attending the Philly show but it was great. My report is as follows:

Early bird attendance on Friday was very strong. Seemed very, very crowded to me in early hours of the show.

Much higher vintage to modern ratio than other shows I've gone to since reopening post-Covid.

Great assortment of vintage dealers, from guys specializing only in high-end graded to those with collector grade commons

Prices reflective of strong market, with the dealers of graded stuff perhaps recognizing a dip in prices since March/April, but certainly no crash

Great to meet some up with Net54 members and meet some others for the first time. I finally met Ted Zanidakis and a few others in person, which was a treat.

Seemed like above average crowds Friday and Saturday. My primary interest as 70’s and 80’s, without a doubt the COVID card craze caught and up was much more of a selection of these cards this time around. Seemed to be a larger crowd in their 30-40’s in my opinion, which makes sense..:great to see the renewed interest in the hobby from that demographic. Great to have the show back.

Speaking of auctions, I met Scott today and consigned some graded books to his upcoming (closes September 5th) comic auction.

Show was insanely busy. Tons of everything.

Seeing the handful of the full red portrait Cobb back run going up via Heritage was awesome.

My thoughts on the show:

Attendance: from opening through about 1 p.m. (the time I was there) the show seemed well-attended. It was busy; however, the crowds were fairly typical for the Philly Show. I was able to find a parking spot reasonably close to the entrance, which hasn't always been the case in the past. So, there were plenty of people. Not record breaking, we've-never-seen-crowds-like-this-before...but a good crowd.

Selection (post-war): From my perspective, there was a great mix of offerings available. I don't have a handle on the different 21st Century products; however, there were quite a few showcases filled with modern singles and a handful of dealers with various unopened boxes, etc. Mainstream post-war (especially baseball) was equally abundant. I could have probably found every single regular base-issue Topps card from 1952-80 if I had looked hard enough. There were also plenty of 80s Fleer basketball, 80s football rookies, 90s inserts, etc., etc., etc.

Selection (pre-war): Well, there's T206 and then there's everything else. As for the "everything else" today, I didn't see the typical selection for this show. My guess is there was brisk dealer-to-dealer and early bird activity on Friday. Or maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. Either way, there was a nice (but not remarkable) selection of Goudeys, T205s, and other pre-war cards. Perspective and experience with this show play their part here. I've probably become spoiled by attending regularly...it would take a table with hundreds of Cracker Jacks or dozens of T3s to stop me in my tracks. Walking by tables with 33 Goudey Ruths, etc. did cause me to slow down a little, though. :)

Bottom line - If you collect pre-war, there would be loads of material for you to look through...even if T206 cards aren't your thing.

Side note - I saw some beautiful cards on display for the purpose of providing auction previews. I don't count what I can't purchase, though.

Selection (pre-war, continued): In total, I remember seeing over 1,000 T206 singles, although the majority were in the hands of a relatively small number of dealers. Along the way, though, I noticed other dealers who had 5/10/20 T206 singles among their cards. I saw rare backs to Piedmonts, HOFers to commons, graded beauties to raw "I think that's still a card" road warriors. Prices were a tad higher than I would have thought. I thought about picking a few of them up. In the end, though, these two were my cardboard treasures for the day:

Eric, you pretty much hit my thoughts exactly (btw it was nice to meet you!). There was far more modern then I typically recall and far more junk era unopened. The days of picking up a random box for $10 just to get something seems gone. $30 for a box of 91 Donruss is completely insane. T206s were everywhere. One statement I overheard that amused me was when some one said they could only find 2 of a specific t206 regardless of back or condition. While I found a few items that I thought were reasonable, the one item I seriously considered was sold by the time I went back to get it.

I was surprised to see more dealers selling modern cards compared to past shows. In the past, I remember most shows were 75/25 or 70/30 vintage vs modern. This show was more like 50/50…I made the comment to a few dealers and they all agreed…I did pick up a small 1952 T deal from Dave S at Baggers and a modern card from a local dealer.

Was there Friday starting about noon through 7 PM.

Dropped off consignments to REA and Huggins and Scott.

Nice to be back at a show. As others have said, some different dealers, mostly with newer cards ( not my cup of tea) but a few dealers did not show due to the date change and having made previous plans, or covid related concerns. Hope they return next time.

Had nice visits talking with Teddy Z and Dan McKee as well as Howard Chasser. Sat for awhile with Bob Warren and Jay Shumsky as they worked out their Exhibit deal!

Picked up a stack of Pittsburgh Exhibits for something new to chase. Anyone want to help me with my new quest? :)

I was at the show all day Saturday very busy finally cleared out some towards the end of the day the aisles were tight great to see many familiar faces. Picked up several exhibit baseball cards I needed plus did some damage on my Play Ball sets but really not the time to buy expensive cards. Best pick up for me was in a .50c box 1953 Radio and TV Stars with an overstruck 1953 Bowman football card on the back.

It was a very good show. I hadn't been to a Philly show in years & this one didn't disappoint. I went specifically to upgrade some T206's and had to sell about 12 dupes to create cash to buy. I got the price I wanted at the first vendor I stopped at.

Prices were high but not obscene. It was great to see several tables with T206, which makes sense because the set is so hot still. My only (slight) regret was not being able to pull the trigger on a Demmitt 2 that was offered to me. Otherwise:

* Placed was packed on Saturday. Many young collectors in the crowd too, which is healthy for the overall future of card collecting.
* Show was run well but would have been nice to see the Booth #'s at each table. Most did not have them, making it somewhat difficult to locate specific vendors.
* Ran into a few Net 54'ers, including the Old Professor- Ted Z, whom it was a pleasure to have a nice discussion with.

I've set up or been to almost all of the Philly shows in the 15 or so years it's been in VF, and if this wasn't a record turnout, I must have missed the one that was better attended. When I pulled in about 4 on Friday, the parking lot for the convention center was full, with many of those there for the casino, of course. And the crowd on Saturday was considerably better. Although it was a joy to see many of the old guard of hobby veterans hanging in there, it was also a big thrill to see so many younger people, women, and collectors of color packing the room like I've never seen before. It certainly answered the perennial question old farts like me have been asking for decades: will the hobby attract new generations to keep the sports-collecting fires burning? The demographics of this show seemed to answer that question resoundingly, and it feels good to know it wasn't just us riding some kind of baby boom anomaly, and that what we helped build up and make a thing has a bright future, indeed. On the downside, there did seem to be a distinct shortage of interesting vintage memorabilia of all kinds, but then it's probably been 20 years since that hasn't been true of just about every show other than the National, and even there it gets sparser by the year as the cool things get sucked up into collections. But I did bring several large boxes of that stuff to cart around myself, and left with practically none of it, having sold or placed in auctions almost everything I brought and driving home Saturday night with my pockets stuffed with cash, checks, and consignment contracts. Throw in dinner with Danny McKee and Teddy Z Friday night, and all in all it was one of the most fun shows I've ever been to.

I've run into that before, although not on Saturday morning. Have you ever parked at the far edge of the lot? The walk back up that hill, after spending hours on your feet, is not something soon forgotten.

I have this recollection of a dealer set up in a trailer about half way up that hill one year. Sorry to have missed this one, but September will be here before you know it.

I did. I won't forget that walk either. Last year, I was carrying a box full of graded cards that I bought from a dealer. It was pretty heavy. I didn't realize how heavy until I had to walk up the hill to get my car.
It was even tougher because I didn't remember which row I parked in.:mad:

I agree if attendance wasn't a record, I don't know when was! I had a great show both selling and buying.

The crowd attending as mentioned was ethnically and chronologically diverse.

I was so busy I barely had time to walk the floor.

While I heard a couple of dealers complaining, most I spoke with did very well.

It was nice to finally meet the man who has the same first 8 letters in his name as me. Also, nice to meet Scott & Lee as well.

I've attended almost every show since 1981 and while not a record breaking crowd (compared to the George Washington Motor Lodge) it was certainly was well attended on both Sat. afternoon and Sun morning, which was a great sign. Dropped off some stuff to REA for consignment, and shopped around. IMO, there was a healthy mix of old and new stuff all over the room. I was disappointed that the grading companies weren't there and a few regular dealers, but it was good seeing some old faces back at the show.

Looking forward to the next one already.
