Did Hank Aaron suck?

Ok. Yeah he was a great hitter and he of course hit a ton of homers. He didn’t suck. But I was looking at my Hank Aaron rookie card and noticed he had 36 errors that year. I thought that was really high for an outfielder. Then I looked at his stats online. It didn’t show that many errors.

Is he known to be error prone? Or is this a known error on his card?

This may be obvious to others but I am primarily a prewar guy.

You have to remember, those stats are for 1953, when he was a minor leaguer in Jacksonville.

According to baseball-reference.com, he did in fact have 36 errors in 1953.

Those are his numbers from his 53 season in the Sally League. I saw him play during roughly the second half of his career and always thought him to be really good defensively but of course Clemente set the standard and nobody I saw compared to him.

Also, he played second base in 1953.

He also played the infield that year. Baseball reference says he played second base. .947 fielding average.

Did not see your post Steve. Must have gone up while I was typing.

I saw an interview of his where he talked about how he gripped a bat like a lefty and obviously hit right. He didn't know it was the wrong way until he reached the minors and someone told him.

His terrible year in the field was mentioned in the original Bad News Bears.

probably all errors on the throw trying to nail someone at home on a base hit and the runner taking 2nd etc...

Aaron didn’t suck

Thanks for sharing that scene, Nunzio. Very cool indeed.

Rafael Palmeiro won a gold glove for playing 28 games at 1b and 128 games at DH.

Well, lets see...

All star every year from 1955 -75
in the top 10 for MVP 13 times, and no lower than 17th between 1955 and 73

He played in an era where multi year contracts weren't common, and did obviously get resigned every year.

If that's a player who sucks, I'll take a team full of them please.

Yeah that is one of the more remarkable things that ever happened in baseball. A true WTF.

Then again, Jethro Tull won the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Grammy award.

Sometimes, awards happen.

Yes indeed. Sometimes the people that choose the award winners can be Thick as a Brick.
