Ever seen a fake 1971 Topps Pete Rose?

Found this card online. Seller fully admitted that he had questions about the authenticity of it. It was $10 shipped, so I figured what the heck.

Quality looks good but I believe it’s a fake. The pete rose, blue dot and outfield are all offset from known examples, shown here.

Who’s out there faking 71 Rose’s? I know the rookies were faked, but this seems like an odd choice to make a fake from. Anyone ever seen a fake 71 Rose before?

Fake, though I don't recall encountering one of these before. Seems kind of pointless to fake VG 1971 Rose's, but somebody evidently has.

They did a nice job, whoever it was.

I may send it off for autographing by Rose, which would seem fitting for this card!

wow. it's like the other thread on "thin" or possibly fake 64 topps. Seems like a lot of effort, but if you can do a lot of them quickly, I guess every $10 in pure profit adds up?

How does the back look and how does it feel in hand? did they get the stock right?

Back looks nice. The paper stock feels right but it’s a bit less flexible than a normal card. Just a bit more rigid, I guess?

The back looks better than the front. The image doesn't 'feel right'.

The 64's are authentic. I have poor condition common 64's of that type that I can trace back 40 years. No one was faking penny cards; there's just multiple stocks used (even of the same color tone) in most Topps sets.

If you are looking for an obvious reason it’s fake, look at the lower case “t” in “Pete” on the front of the card and compare it to the real ones. Totally different font used in the fake version.

The "r" is different as well.

Again, why go through the effort?

That’s my question as well.

I think it’s a odd practice in photoshop for someone for an inside joke or just fun. There is no reason at all to try to recreate the text and dot, and using a totally different font has to be a purposeful hint. No one would not do that on purpose when they could just use a full front scan.

I think you stumbled on a weird inside prank somehow.

It’s honestly kinda neat because it’s not likely to fool anyone for long.

Never mind, I found the guy on Etsy of course.

He must be changing little things for copyright

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1218350...eld-cincinnati

Lots more from him where that came from.

Beat me to it. All of the typefaces are wrong...

Attachment 545222

Edited to add: Also look at how non-smooth the top right rounded corner is. Total hack job.

Oh, well as long as it's all in fun. Remember when I sold you that fake card and you had no idea? Wasn't that fun!

Well I thought it was a one-off till I realized that this was a business, but didn’t want to delete a comment. That was the “never mind”. ;)

so that Etsy page might have just ruined my weekend...that sucks.

Before I saw that, and saw the back scan of the card from the OP, I thought maybe it was some sort of vending box version vs. wax...the back looked really legit.

I can absolutely see those reprints getting mixed in with larger lots or sets and never getting noticed until way too late, even by knowledgable collectors or auction houses not checking every card in a set, etc.

It is very nicely done. The rear looks really great.

As I said earlier, the seller had listed a few oddball things and had this card. He wanted $10 shipped and fully admitted that he felt that it wasn’t authentic. I didn’t do a comparison match but for $10, I felt it was worth the risk to see what it actually was. You never know what you might stumble on, like you said….vending vs. wax, maybe a salesman sample, etc.

I still think it was worth $10. Maybe I’ll pay $80 and have Rose sign it and just keep it for my collection.

Horrible fake. Idk how anyone can say its good...the fonts are not even close. Garbage.
