San Diego Padres

Living in San Diego forever and cheering every year for the Padres, I would like opinions on how far they will go in the play offs? It's tough rooting for a team that can't get over the hump.

I'm also a life long Cardinals fan so I am torn.

pclpads 10-06-2022 02:26 PM

The Pudres will all be back home late Sat nite waiting for the start of spring training. End of season, end of story.

I picked them to win the World Series in the MLB bracket challenge. Worse I can do is lose.

isiahfan 10-07-2022 08:04 PM

Live in SD too...but Detroit fan here...sorry...

Any way...baseball is like hockey to me...anything can happen in a short series. Padres have a solid core of SP...as do others...Astros..Dodgers...Mets...etc., I think there are other teams that will outlast them...and they don't match up well with LA...but if they can avoid them they have a chance. They really just need to beat Max or Jacob 1 more tim to move on.

Interesting take, but sorry it didn't work out like that. The game really wasn't interesting after the first inning.

Good Morning Dave. What is your next prediction for the Padres?

they looked good and their stars produced

Can they keep it up they have a tough test ahead of them in LA

pclpads 10-10-2022 10:54 AM

Too bad they can't throw Musgrove in all the LA games. He's their best pitcher / best chance since Peavy.

well would be funny if they win the world series without Tatis as the braves won it without acuna who at least contributed in the regular season as opposed to tatis

all that money paid to one player and to win without him is pretty funny and i cant imagine that happening in the NBA etc..

and yeah they did make some trades but that was when they had thought tatis would be back.. ...the braves made trades last year knowing acuna was out

gonefishin 10-10-2022 11:26 AM

I agree with everything said. I wonder if Fernando was watching the game and came to the realization of how big of a mistake he made? I was on the Tatis band wagon until such time as "Ring Worm" excuse came along. His legacy, if there will ever be one, will be forever tarnished like so many others. Unfortunate reality.

With that said, Machado and Musgrove are the heart of this team.

Hi Dave, I agree with your Peavy comparison. I have to admit, though, that Darvish has surprised me this year. I thought he was washed up. But, he has stepped up too.

Now, if only the Padres can get 3 great consecutive starts out of Snell in the post season, and they might win it all!

Padres!!!!!!

gonefishin 10-12-2022 02:59 PM

Well, I'm glad we made it through the Clevinger start - he was pulled before the Padres were behind by 20 runs so that's good. I think I would have started a middle reliever before I would start someone with an ERA of around 10, but I'm just a fan.

Dot it tonight - go Padres!

1952boyntoncollector 10-12-2022 10:57 PM

darvish with the W

People argued with me on year about visiting pitchers able to get a W when pitch 5 innings with their team scoring in the 6th inning..while home pitcher only gets 5 innings of offense.

happened game 2 padres/dodgers....darvish got the W cause team scored in the 6th inning...even if dodgers scored 20 runs in bottom of the 6th kershaw doesnt get the win if pitched 5 innings..... unless i read wrong box score

gonefishin 10-13-2022 09:17 AM

The Padres came through!

Maybe that was Goose Gossage in the outfield disguised as a Goose!

gonefishin 10-13-2022 02:10 PM

Exactly - he played for every team in MLB but is known for his stints with the Padres and Yankees.

He also wrote a book - "The Goose is Loose" - Maybe that was him out promoting his book!

Nice

gonefishin 10-15-2022 10:01 AM

Well, I guess the Padres have made this interesting now! PetCo was rocking and so was the city. Maybe they will just put the Dodgers out to pasture tonight - we will see.

please dont start clev again..... just musgrove darshivish and snell rest of way

88 dodgers used hershiser, welch and belcher and that was enough even with their terrible lineup and Gibson only getting 1 at bat..

I totally agree to go with Yu, Snell and the Muskrat himself.

I don't see how you can possibly start a pitcher with an ERA of around 10 against a pitcher with an ERA of around 3 and expect to win. He was lucky to make it 2 innings! I was so upset with that. The Padres have a couple of middle relievers that could start if need be - but please don't start Clevinger. He needs to go into the off season and work some things out. Great potential but not a starter at this point in time.

I absolutely loved seeing Trevor there. He is a class act and a nice gentleman.

1952boyntoncollector 10-15-2022 03:19 PM

what is also strange is how they argue regular season record matters versus playoff record

In football you can start your best QB every game if healthy so thats the playoff product you have

in baseball you could be 10-40 with your number 3-5 starters in the regular season which means nothing int he playoffs as most of the games are your number 1 and 2 starters

great pitching beats great hitting as well...they should should just bring up the record of your 1-2 or 1-3 starters in regular season..what does it matter what your record is when your number 5 starter pitched in the regular season

gonefishin 10-15-2022 03:33 PM

Agreed - what the Padres, or any team for that matter, needs is the 1967 World Series version of Bob Gibson. He pitched 3 complete games, winning all 3. He only allowed a total of 14 hits and 3 earned runs for all 3 games. Wow, absolutely amazing!

nolemmings 10-15-2022 04:05 PM

Or Mickey Lolich the following year. Three complete games in 8 days, beating Gibson in Game 7 by throwing a complete game on two days' rest, yielding only a solo shot with two out in the ninth.

gonefishin 10-15-2022 04:31 PM

I would take either one! Since Mickey was a Padre, and so was Goose Gossage, maybe that would be a couple of nice pick ups!

ledsters 10-16-2022 12:33 AM

The Padres should send a "thank you card" to Dodger manager Dave Roberts.
For as he went thru his staff he finally found a "chucker" that was nervous and didn't have his best stuff. Walking the lead-off man to open the 7th inning was
crucial and the rest is history.

clydepepper 10-17-2022 09:45 AM

Not that it will deter me or, I'm guessing, any Net54 members, but, if the Yankees don't win tonight, this will be the worst rated Series ever viewership wise.

...and Aaron Boone may be out.
...and Aaron Hicks...
...and Aaron Judge...

...and it wasn't a good week for Aaron Rodgers either.

but, I think Aaron Donald will do okay.

A totally gutless comment, given the comfort and advantage of hindsight, after the games have been played. I presume you sent it with your head and keyboard underwater from the flooding in FL.? :D

gonefishin 10-17-2022 12:48 PM

Viewership? I don't care if its only Padre and Philly fans left! That would actually be kind of nice and we won't have to listen to all the Bull Shit about how yadda, yadda, yadda.

Let's all take a lesson from Al Davis - "Just Win Baby!"

But they have Big Bad Darth Bader... 3 Homers and 5 RBI in 4 games this series.

gonefishin 10-17-2022 01:46 PM

I just want to say that I went to my first Padre game in 1970. I was in Marine boot camp in San Diego and our entire platoon and series (4 platoons) went to the Padre game. We, of course, were required to cheer for the Padres. I've been cheering ever since. I've cheered through all the era's, ups and downs, watched Hoffman trot from the bullpen to "Hell's Bells", stood up amazed every time Tony Gwynn came up to bat and singled to right field with ease, up until now when Musgrove pitched the no hitter.

So, I really don't care if anyone that's not a Padre or Philly fan watches the game.

Go Padres!

i would think if someone says something like 'going to stay home' or elaborates more than just 'i think this team will win' its open season...afterall if the prediction was right later on im sure we would be hearing more of a storied post saying more than just 'i was right'

campyfan39 10-17-2022 09:28 PM

You are not kidding. He is a complete idiot who has done less with more than anyone in recent memory.

I am happy for long suffering Padres fans (including a close friend of mine) but they have several "look at me" players that I cannot pull for. Soto is the worst. I was so hoping my Dodgers didn't get him but then hated that the Padres did.

If the series is them against the Astro cheats then it will be the first time in decades I have not watched.

Hey Chris, you can jump on board with the Padres until the season is over, one way or the other. That's what's nice about us Padre fans - we are all inclusive and welcome all - short time or for the long haul - the Padres are for everyone. We have a band wagon that people get on and get off - it doesn't matter to us.

The Phillies are a good team. Now the series is even - it should be interesting in the days ahead.

philliesfan 10-21-2022 07:17 AM

Being from Philly, i want the Phillies to win the World Series.
However, if the Padres win, I would be cheering for them to win the World Series.
I hate the New York Yuckees and the Houston Cheats.
Go Phils!!!!
Go Padres!

Same here Robert. If the Padres lose to the Phillies, I'm cheering for the Phillies all the way! Who invented the term "Small Market" any way - screw them.

I've liked the Phillies since the Robin Roberts and Richie Ashburn days. I don't know why there are so many haters out there.

mrreality68 10-22-2022 05:23 AM

Agreed I do not like Houston so whoever wins the NL I hope wins the Series

I the flip side

The Strikeout that was not a swing (in my opinion) last night hurts the game and effects the outcome big time potentially

The Umps blew a big call

I watched the game on my computer, but even on a small screen I saw it. I understand that one play doesn't win, or lose, the game BUT that was crazy. One of the worst calls I've seen this year. Definitely not a swing, not even close. It was a very critical part of the game - critical - but it's time to move forward.

Those Phillies are playing excellent baseball. The Pad's may be in trouble because I understand Clevinger is starting game 4. Hopefully he will make it past the 2d inning.

gonefishin 10-23-2022 04:43 PM

Even though I'm a Mets fan, on some level I am happy for Harper and the fan base. If they can win the WS (as a huge underdog probably), what an incredible run this will have been

I'm amazed the Phillies made it to the World Series and am waiting to see if I get picked in the ticket lottery for a chance to buy tickets to a game. I don't have high hopes for how the Phillies will do against Houston, but they made it this far so you never know.

Best of luck - I hope you get tickets!

Steve D 10-24-2022 08:00 PM

The Padres had a good run, but just met a stronger team.

Harper, Schwarber and Hoskins were unbeatable, and Wheeler was nearly unhittable in both games he pitched.

+1 Agreed

Sadly we missed what he could have done this year in the playoffs.

funny since they did better this year in playoffs he comes back sooner next year.

12 games sooner since playoffs games played counts as games served for him

with the extra wild card, teams dont mind spending more money as well because bigger margin of error and if just get in like the phillies you got a chance...
