Price point: just how difficult (or pricey) is the T206 Magie

Hi friends - I’m jumping into the T206 game again after being a somewhat passive participant since the mid 80s. Sitting at 169 cards with a few doubles. Justin and Jay lay out a 2 year window and $25k budget for getting to 520. I went from 140-something to 169 in two months here. I’m giving myself about 8 or 9 years to complete (we have a lot of work to do on the house).

The thing is: completing this is within the realm of possibility. 520 is the magic number, but what about one of those Big Four? Doyle and Wagner are out. Plank is really high - but Magie does seem within the budget. Instead of buying a hot rod when I retire, a Magie seems like a decent trade off. What do you budget for it, I guess, that is the question.

A PSA 2 most likely costs you around 12-13k right now. They are difficult to find because many think the same way you do, I can't possibly get the true big 3 so I'll concentrate on that, haven't seen many for sale lately. I've owned one in the past and if I had it to do over again I'd shoot for the hot rod.

An SGC 2 is in a current REA auction. Its already at $9,000 with six days to go.

But would you call your Hot Rod the Magiemobile?

Kevin

I always imagined I'd get an AMC of some sort...

I had a 68 AMX as a kid, so fun. Had to sell it after I stole my dads corvette and blew the engine racing on the freeway one night. Come to think of it that was way more fun than a Magie, thanks for putting things in perspective.

I think when I hit 350 cards, I'll have to figure out what I want to do...lol...could I find a 79 AMC Spirit with a V8 engine?

I'd recommend the 401 Gremlin if you want to impress the ladies.

Good luck on the build! It’s been a good while since we laid out the 25k blueprint. In today’s market it’s going to cost a bit more. But still so worth it!

For a low grade Magie would estimate 6-8k for an A/1 and then on up.

Thanks for all the input. Glad to see Jay made it into the thread. I think I might like to hijack the thread and discuss AMC cars. I see your Gremlins, Pacers. But I am a Spirit man, myself.

Now, what about the Eagle?

But seriously:

2021 Goals -

Increase from 169 to 200+ cards

Add a Lajoie

Find an AMC Spirit for sale

Maggie was in reach around $5k not that long ago. If you can swing it now, I might consider it and build around it. Agree that Demmitt and O'hara also wise. Even the Eberfeld has grown in value and green Cobb's are getting up there too. Personally, I think this set has really gone from a patience project to a costly endeavor at rapid rate.

My first car was a 1971 Javelin SST 401 in High School (78). Got a ticket going over 100 and doing a 4 wheel lock skid through an intersection going to lunch during school. Tommy's was only 4 blocks away. :)Those cars are awesome and in your price range if you can find one. I graduated to a 77 Trans Am in 79.

I picked up a Resto Mod 76 Trans Am 6 speed 464/600HP in 2015. Best investment of my life and VROOOOM it around the neighborhood every week cranking Tom Petty. For 30 Minutes:D Feels like I'm back in High School. Though they can be a money pit at times, there is NOTHING like it. Just make sure you have the Gold AAA membership.

I say forget the 25K Sal Maglie bum and get yourself a Hot Rod. My biggest regret in life is that I only have a 2 car garage. Good Luck!

That. Is. Awesome.

Javelins were beasts.

That was a 68' I think, a 2 seater? Glad I didn't smash mine, especially with me in it. I kept 2-bags of cement in the trunk to keep the rear end down.

Would love to get one but the garage is full and the honyack's cars are in the driveway:) the poor thing.:p

No worries, you have a few more crisis's to overcome. I'm on my 3rd mid-life crisis now.

Ah yes, the cement bags. It was 68 and a blast to drive as you know. Fun fact; those cars were 3 inches shorter than a Corvette.

Phil, I love the look of your AMX, especially the white color. Although I have never been into performance cars, I loved the looks of the 1968-70 2-seater AMC AMX. In the early 1980's, I purchased this rust-free (originally a CA car), hunter-green 1969 AMX and used it as my daily driver to work (I had a relatively short commute) for several years, until the engine began to burn oil and I sold it. I wish I had kept it and had the engine rebuilt. Actually, a performance car guy probably would not have been interested in this particular car because it had the basic 290 V-8 engine - I think most 1969 AMXs were sold with either the 343 or 390 V-8 engines.

Casey2296 01-16-2021 11:50 AM

Nice car Val, they were so light even with the 290 they would get up and go. Nowadays you can get a rebuilt HP 390 for about the same price as 2-3 14CJ HOFers and just drop it in.

Kevin 01-16-2021 06:43 PM

Now let's say I was interested in picking up a Spirit, Eagle, Pacer etc. Where would I look?

I hate to highjack this thread by referring to the original post, but the SGC 2 Magie at REA is up to $12,500. It closes tomorrow.
