1950 Royal Dessert Brissie "C" on Cap

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts about this card.

As Royal Dessert card collectors know, these cards were issued over a period of several years and as a result, reflected changes that occurred during that time frame.

On Lou Brissie's initial card, he is shown with an "A" on his cap since he was a member of the Philadelphia Athletics. Brissie joined the Indians early in 1951 and the Royal card was changed to reflect this by changing the "A" on his cap to a "C".

I've been trying to find this card for 25+ years and finally saw one listed on eBay a few months back. I dropped out of the bidding at $500 and it ended up selling for over $700.

His "A" cap card is very plentiful. Any idea why the "C" cap version is so scarce?

Head scratcher, I guess. He played five seasons with the A's and then three seasons with the Indians, but he was with the A's only for about the first year or so that Royal printed his card, and with the Indians for the final three years that his cards were printed. So, it's puzzling why the A's cards would be more plentiful. Maybe the company just took a long time to figure out that Lou had been traded and did not get around to changing the cap until quite late in the printing process.

Looking at both cards, it appears that Royal simply got lazy with Lou's. Same head shot used on both, with an airbrushed Indians cap letter. Even the write up on the later card was botched in a couple of places. So, maybe not surprising that the pudding pusher didn't even bother to print very many of Lou's Indians card. Alternately, perhaps the write-up errors on the Indians card ("Phillies" as Lou's previous team, "1952" as his first season) caused Royal to just pull the card from production after only a small number were printed.

Brissie Indians

There are cards with the correct: "Formerly with the Athletics".

Check out my Royal Desserts checklist. I'm calling the "Formerly with the Phillies" an error card.
