October Pickups
Being a Phillies fan, any Lummis Peanut Butter card has been on my bucket list for a while now. Realistically, with how rarely they come up for sale or auction, I didn't think I would ever own one on my collecting budget. I was an underbidder when the Willie "Puddinhead" Jones Lummis card was included in a lot at Leon's Heritage auction a couple months ago.
I was shocked when the "Puddinhead" Jones card showed up on eBay with a decent BIN. The card just arrived, and I am excited. It is already one of my favorite cards because of how tough they are to find. Thanks to the long-time collector who made the card available. http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/...psle310mdk.jpg http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/...psg0vs2mlv.jpg |
Congrats on landing a great card with a great story.

I love the reference to Shibe Park. Very, very cool!!

Finally picked one up. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10...fc57efce29.jpg

Thanks, jb67 and Jolly. As you can see, the card was well loved by Leon. ;) I love obscure or hard to find cards or postcards that can't be located on eBay every day of the year. That is what most of my collection is, even if some of the cards might only be worth a couple hundred dollars.
The combined SGC/PSA population list shows only 19 graded Lummis Peanut Butter cards, with no player in the 12-card set having more than three graded copies. There was a Bill Nicholson Lummis Peanut Butter card on eBay for the longest time with a BIN price of $5,750, however.:rolleyes: |
Scratch confirmed on holder. Been waiting for one with this combination of focus and centering FOREVER! Pumped.

Very nice 55 Mantle PSA 7, maybe one day I can upgrade mine......thanks to ebay's recent 5x normal ebay bucks promo I was able to affordably pickup up these two cards: first this 55 Mantle....nice t/b centering and color, just some light touches of corner wear and will fit in nice with the rest of my set....now down to just 3 cards on the 55 Bowman set. Then I was able to (again affordably) add my (lucky) 13th PSA 5 1952 Topps Hi # to my set.

I am really interested to see where the Richie Ashburn Lummis Peanut Butter card currently in the REA auction closes. Sometimes, it is years between a Lummis Beanut Butter card appearing at auction or for sale anywhere, so I am kinda shocked to see an Ashburn Lummis card in the REA auction. When I exchanged e-mails with the seller of the Puddinhead Lummis card, he wrote to me that he has been collecting for 40 years and he still needs three Lummis Peanut Butter cards to complete the set. |
MattyC congrats on landing the 55 Bowman Mantle. That is a great looking card and hard to beat. Was that an Ebay find?
Landed this 69 Mays to add to my Willie collection. I have been looking for a long time to find a nicely centered one that did not break the bank. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...e-mays-psa-6.5 |
Another stellar baseball card with that Mays right there. Finding a 69 with that centering and so square is quite the feat for a collector. 69s are pretty impossible because of that issue.
I can really appreciate a super rare piece like that Peanut Butter card; pieces like that really distinguish a collection. Thanks regarding the kind words on the 55B. It was an eBay auction that I was sweating, due to the more intense than usual scramble going on these days for Mantles. It was a new high price for the grade I believe, but thankfully not by as much as I feared, LOL. As I try and build the prettiest Mick Run, card for card, that I can, I continue to be amazed by how effectively rare some Mantles are to find if one is seeking certain attributes. The pop numbers really belie the difficulty. |
some awesome and really cool esoteric stuff being posted. Congrats to all!
Here are two recent pickups Got this one with a $5 discount and a $20 coupon. The coupon was sent to me by ebay. Then I bought $100 gift card for $95 from Paypal. So not bad at all. Wish the centering was better. Ill upgrade eventually. For now am really happy to have it! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/image_21.jpg And this card has unbelievable eye appeal but has a little wax on the back. Ill take it! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/image_20.jpg |

Just got a batch of graded coins/pins back from PSA - the 50 day grading specials seem to take forever! The only thing that I did not like was that the labels were to small for "180 back" and "200 back" for the '62 Salada coins. Not quite a complete Aaron run, but getting there. Sorry about the blurry scans. Apparently, my scanner does not like PSA's coin/pin slab. I also need to thank PSA. The coins were shipped back in two of the nice blue plastic PCGS storage boxes.

Just got this in. Took advantage of the $20 discount eBay offered.

Topps 1968 Bench
Bruce-- check to see which version you have. In the first line of the back bio the word "the" is either spelled correctly or is spelled "tne". Not sure if it is corrected typo or recurring print defect, but neither version is scarce
|
Al - Mine reads "the". Never heard of that variation. I'll have to keep an eye out for the other one.

I finally managed to add some new stuff to my collection. I traded my Pittsburgh Exhibit 5 of Clubs (1 of 1 graded) for the 8 of Clubs (1 of 2 graded) to help a buddy in completing his set. I then scored these sweet, original Phillies Cigar boxes. The backs contain an image of Mantle and an advertisement for the premium photo give away, so they will make great companion pieces.

Love the Clementes, arexcrooke. That '58 is a really beautiful card, probably my favorite of his.

60 Clemente
|
That's a really nice Clemente card, Patrick.
|
Agreed. That's a real beauty, Patrick.
You guys are giving me a nervous twitch. I need to buy some cards, especially a couple Clementes. |

I have to agree that is a very nice looking 60 Clemente. Congrats. My Bench mini arrived in the mail yesterday. Very pleased to find one with good centering.

Everybody loves some Mantles. Happy with these pick ups.

I LOVE the picture of Mick on that clubs card-- he looks awesome in that one.
That is a whole collection of Mantles right above-- and the 62 looks SHARP! This just came. I am beyond stoked on this card. In my experience it is the toughest basic Mick to find in a nice state alongside the 51B. The three problem areas are tilt, centering, and especially focus/registration. The image is often so blurry. Take the 8.5 that PWCC has running as a prime example. I realized that finding the hypothetical specimen with all three attributes was something of a chimera, so my realistic hope was one that is crisply focused, with close to zero tilt, and ideally conceded just top/bottom centering. Pulse rose upon seeing that the image on this one was crystal clear. http://photos.imageevent.com/mattyc/...tlePSA8412.jpg |
Thanks Matt. The 62 is extremely sharp. It's pretty nicely centered as well. That is a great '57.

New Hank Aaron
1 Attachment(s)
Has been a while since I've added to my Hank Aaron collection. In this case, it was a collectible I didn't even know existed.
While I'd known about (and have) the HR 715 "I was there" ballpark certificate, evidently a HR 714 cert was made by the Braves but never distributed (since Aaron hit the home run on the road). Voila! Attachment 207301 |
I bought all of these, plus some high grade commons from the same era for 15 bucks shipped from a ebay lot

Dean, That 62 Clemente is a real beauty along with the 54 Mays. My kind of card. Mid grade with outstanding eye-appeal. Congrats.

Jerry - fantastic Williams! Well done! |

Thanks guys for the kind words!
The '57 Ted Williams has been a hard card to find within my grade range that was well-centered with nice eye-appeal and didn't have the snowy background. I paid a little more than what I wanted to but felt it was worth it to add to my collection. Can't wait to have it in hand! |
