November Pick-Ups

Time to kickoff the new month of new cardboard additions. Here are a few of mine that just arrived. Very pleased with the 69 Pete Rose as it looks under-graded to me.

The card isn't totally new, but the sig is... just signed at Waukesha Sports Cards. Hank's sig is aging a bit, but still like the way it looks, and very glad to get it while he's still signing.

Waukesha, Wisconsin? That's where I grew up. :D

Yes indeed Bill! They were super nice btw. I'm sure they had loads of mail ins like mine, but still took time to talk with me the 3-4 times I called. I had never mailed anything of similar value to be signed, so I was a bit nervous. I mailed it in a box with a fresh sharpie, 3-4 pics showing where I wanted it, blah blah blah.. And they, he did everything I asked.

jb67 11-03-2015 03:12 PM

Thanks everyone for the compliments.

I'm not an autograph collector but if were to become one Hammerin Hank would be one of the first auto's I would get. itjclarke congrats on the auto. On his rookie no less. Very cool.

The final player card I needed for my 56T Brooklyn Dodgers team set--just need the team card now.

Am not a big spender so it took all year to find a "good enough" specimen that worked with my wallet.

Y'all have been good sports about indulging my occasional oddities, and I've been a good sport about NOT posting every new Isaac Newton card I find. But here is one I really love from a French chocolatier.

Not sure of exact date...one source said 1888, but I could see it as anywhere up to about 1910. Not easy to see from the pic, but the graphics are embossed, which I love, and I'm also a sucker for gold borders.

For my fellow 1972 enthusiasts, this is one of the top 5 hardest cards from that set to find centered. I'm not into graded cards, but it's near impossible to locate one, so I grabbed this guy up the second I saw it!!

Really beautiful example. I think the Aaron In Action must be in that same Top 5!

Nice card Dean! Those cards are a little hard to find without potato chip stains on them. Congrats, you had to be stoked!!!!

No, they aren't the highest technical grades I have ever purchased, but these have pretty decent eye appeal and the price was right. Thanks to fellow board member Steve Wilk for the Clemente.

jchcollins 11-07-2015 07:08 AM

Nice cards. The good thing about 56's is that with the oversize design and color pop that most of them have, you can find a bunch of cards that still display great in VG-ish condition. Personally I'm suspicious of most cards that old without at least a little patina on them. :)

Thanks, John. Yeah, some sets still display well even in Vg-VGEX condition. '56 Topps is one of those sets. I also really like '53 Bowman Color but won't collect it because the prices I am willing to pay would result in cards that IMHO just don't display well.

CharleyBrown 11-08-2015 07:00 PM

Wow that Banks has incredible eye-appeal. Love that Bench as well. Some great cards as usual this month!

Here's my addition. I had previously owned 2 '54 Topps Gray Back Jackie Robinson cards in the past, and sold them off - and very much regretted doing so. Wasn't sure when I'd see one again at a reasonable price (707 has a PSA6ST for $2500). Thankfully, Heritage failed to indicate in the auction title or description that the '54 Topps was actually the MUCH tougher Gray Back version. The picture pack card (highest graded) was an added bonus.

Robert - that 56T Mantle is a really great looking card. Definitely would not look out of place in a higher grade!

Here are a couple recent additions. First I'm a sucker now for centered Mantles. Already have a psa 5.5, but this one looks darn near as good and better centered. 53 Bowman I believe may be the most undervalued Mantle there is just comparing the numbers on the pop report...

http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...owman-color-59

Also I finally got outside my comfort zone and bought something other than Mantle. I am leaning towards either starting a Maris run, or dappling in the rookie category. Haven't decided yet Maris may be better for my wallet though...

Now I just have to fill the album with stamps.

Hi gang,

I don't post very frequently because I don't buy cards for my collection all that often, normally just around Christmas and my birthday. But I had to pull the trigger on this '59 Willie for the price. Although the corners may make it a tad worse than advertised, (EX) it was still a deal for the money. No creases and decent centering. Trying to rebuild a collection right now of some older cards I had as a kid - and although I actually started out looking for a '63 Mays #300, this is what I wound-up with. :)

Yeah, I think some of that may be an auto-improvement from the scanner - the borders and color on the actual card look a little bit dull to me, but it's certainly not a showstopper. I paid $35 for the card. I have a '58 Aaron PSA 4 that this will look nice next to...:)

1957 Kahn's Wiener Clemente

2 Attachment(s)
Hello Everyone,

I just picked up this 1957 Kahn's Wiener Clemente. Don't know much about it. One question I have is why some refer to it as a rookie card when Clemente is obviously featured in the 1955 and 56 Topps issues?

Best regards,

Joe

jchcollins 11-09-2015 07:15 PM

I don't know much about the Kahn's cards as a set, but I do know that Clemente is one that Clemente collectors generally slaver over...in any condition. Nice find!

Technically not a November pickup, but since I don't post much...

Always thought this was a neat looking '56. The action shot I believe is from the '53 World Series - catcher is Yogi Berra. :)

Joe, I contacted someone who was selling this very card and billing it as an RC^2 (Roberto Clemente Rookie Card). I asked him what gave it that distinction and his response was that it was Clemente's first Kahn's card--the 55/56 sets being Reds only.

I suppose it's the same rationale as the 52T Mantle. Definitely, I will still continue to think of the 55T Clemente as the "real" RC, but I suspect this seller's response matches the thinking of others who attach the RC designation to the 57 Kahns.

That's quite a stretch.

Agree. Just because a particular card manufacturer wasn't active yet when a player was a rookie does not make all their first issue cards rookie cards. Is a '49 Leaf Joe DiMaggio his "rookie" Leaf card? Nonsense.

jason.1969 11-12-2015 10:19 AM

I agree. I wasn't endorsing the viewpoint but merely sharing it.

In the case of Clemente, it feels particular odd to me given that Topps is Topps and Kahn's Wieners is...Kahn's Wieners. Now were things reversed and Clemente had a 54 Kahn's Wieners but only a 55 Topps, I would definitely endorse the 54 as his true Rookie and the 55 Topps as his "major issue" RC.

Moving over to Mantle for a bit, that's kind of a tweener in that Bowman really was a major release, just not Topps. Still, I am in the camp that does not at all consider the 52T Mantle an RC. It's a spectacular card and a significant one to be sure, but to paraphrase Stan Lee, "1952 Topps Mickey Mantle...nuff said." I don't think it needs the RC label to underscore its prominence in the hobby.

Rookie Card

What is the official hobby accepted definition of a rookie card anyway ? :)

Admittedly bad form but am posting again now that the card is in hand. Much nicer in person!

Paid a little over VCP, but I thought it looked great and might bump since it was slabbed before half grades.

Bestdj777 11-12-2015 08:35 PM

Not exactly a card but figured people on this side of the board may appreciate it a little more. The large image of Mantle was cut from a Jello advertising poster (the smaller image is a reproduction of what the entire poster once looked like) and then signed by Mantle. As a bonus, I discovered a Moose Skowron autograph on the back of it when I received it. By far one of my favorite pickups in a really long time and cannot wait to hang it in the future.
