Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Back in the mid-1990's in Cooperstown, NY I was set-up next to Jimmy Spence at the HOF weekend
BB card Show. I let him examine it and his opinion of this inscription was that it was real.
Prior to Jimmy looking at it, I had several other opinions from qualified dealers back in the Willow Grove
Shows in the early 1980's. No one has ever dismissed this inscription as not real. Also at those shows,
several reputable dealers offered some pretty good $$$$ to buy this book.

The "Sincerely....Babe Ruth" inscription is written with a fountain pen in a book that was published
in 1930. It was part of an original sports memorabilia collection dating back to the early 1940's.

TED Z
Posted By: Dan Bretta
Of all the autographs that I've gotten in person that I didn't have to pay for these are my favorites. Jim Palmer was set up in the underwear department of the local Miller&Paine dept store signing for free. He was very talkative and signed as many items for you that you wanted. He offered me an autographed photo in his Jockey's, but I declined. Gordon and Saberhagen were youngsters with the KC Royals when they came to town to the local card shop to sign. Both of those guys were really nice as well.

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
The Mantle was in a box of UD All Time Heroes. I had a stack of the packs on my desk at work, and while on hold on the phone I'd open a pack or two. I'd stack up the pulled cards beside the packs, so I had 2 piles going, cards and packs. One day I came across that white card, with a hologram on the back. A few days later I called UD, gave them the #, my name, answered some questions... and the guy was about to say goodbye. I asked about my autographed card, he said I already had it, it would be in the pack with the white card. I hung up the phone and started going through the card pile. No idea who's autograph I'd have. I finally saw blue ink, and it was on a Mantle card... on the back was a matching hologram.

Stanky signed for me after a Sun Belt baseball game, at Western Kentucky University, in Bowling Green, KY. The game was over, I walked onto the field with pen and card in hand. Stanky saw me, smiled, and ambled towards me, a young college player at his side. The player said, "Look coach, he's got a damn antique!" as I held out the card. Stanky smiled, signed the card, and asked me where I got the card. That would have been in 1983, I think, which I believe was his last of 14 years as coach for the University of South Alabama, he had a 488-193 record there.

Bunning signed his rookie card for me when I mailed it in. A classmate of mine was doing an internship with him in DC. He first signed a baseball for me while he was visiting the President's office at Northern Kentucky University, only minutes from his home in Southgate. He was pleasant and happily signed.

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
All of this nice stuff above prompted me to dig out some more signed stuff...

From 1886, a $1000 bond for the New Jersey Junction Railroad Co. They needed money and were in receivership, the powers and forces figured a good way to have these bonds sellable was to have J P Morgan as one of the Trustees, that is his signature on the top line.

Next is a Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring card, the autographed Arwen card, Liv Tyler. Liv's Arwen brought additional energy into an already hot movie. I saw her performance and had to track down one of these cards.

And at the bottom is the signature page from Bill Walker's 1934 contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. For a few years I had this contract on loan at the Baseball Museum in St. Louis that was just outside the ballpark. They have some fine stuff, I suggest any of you in St. Louis check it out. I have Pepper Martin's 1934 Gashouse Gang contract, too. It is currently on exhibit at the Museum. Martin's contract has an extra clause typed in about attendance, as does this contract. Martin's is signed by Breadon, the president. This contract has a second extra clause, about abstaining from the use of alcoholic beverages, and you can see that the Cardinals' vice-president, Branch Rickey, signed. Wouldn't you have loved to have heard this contract being haggled out! I had a copy of Durocher's 1934 contract, it had an extra page in it, with the typed items initialled by Durocher and Rickey, with stuff about the club paying attorney fees, alimony, abstinance from gambling, and stuff like that. Rickey is a bit of a tough HOF autograph.
