M101 Ruth and CJ Jacksons in MH - Over/Under

I’ve been watching the Mile High auction and curious how the board thinks the Ruth and Jacksons will do tonight. It feels like the first high-end post National and post-“greater concerns on economy” auction ending. Softer prices? New highs?

Rhotchkiss 08-06-2022 03:44 PM

All I know is I am almost positive that Gimbels jackson used to be mine. I bought it for $8500 in 2016. Traded it later to Jeff K along with a famous and Barr Jackson for his PSA 2 1914 Joe Jackson. If that gimbels is over $50k, than the FB is probably worth the same, which means hopefully my 1914 CJ is worth $100k, or it was a bad deal. And if that was the case, the 1914 CJ in MH needs to be north of $220k. I don’t think my CJ is worth $100k and I don’t think the CJ tonight goes for $220k… I should never traded my 1916 Jackson’s

Predictions:

M101 Ruth: $400k+ (same exact card sold in an MH auction in December 2021 for $412k)

1914 CJ Jackson: $180k+ (could go over $200k)

As an aside, many items seem low. I expect some massive jumps in extended bidding

canjond 08-06-2022 04:16 PM

Totally agree on the prices seeming soft so far on a lot of lots. I had wondered whether were seeing a small correction.

At the moment the prices on many cards seems soft and it could be from the Nationals, From all the Auctions at once, a combination, or it could just be that extended time will see a big jump in bids. I believe it will be the later.

Regarding the Gimbels card, Sadly for both Ryan and I he is correct and it was his, then mine, then it moved on so I could get my dream Ruth card.

The Rookie Ruth should go for over $400K
the 1915 CJ Joe Jackson PSA is trending for $325K to $350K Range
The 1914 CJ Joe Jackson SGC 4 is stronger than I thought at this point and should go for $185k to $195K (rooting for it for Ryan's CJ 2 and also for mine since I have a 2 also)
The 1916 Gimbel Joe Jackson should go for $80K
The 1915 CJ Joe Jackson PSA 3 should go for 65Kto 70K(a 3 went for $76K in April in Mile High
1922 e121 Babe Ruth Holding Ball is trending in the $35K to 40K Range

all of these prices to me would indicate a strong card market and not effected by National and many other Auctions at least as they Relate to Jackson and Ruth

mrreality68 08-06-2022 10:04 PM

Wow I am way off on most of those predictions especially the 1914 and 1915 CH Joe Jackson’s
Bidding was soft in extended time. Very surprised
Only the Ruth Rookie ended strong

Rhotchkiss 08-06-2022 10:42 PM

I took a flyer on the 1914 CJ Jackson and think I got a great deal!

I think prices were mixed- some very strong and some a little lower. I don’t think any real conclusions one way or the other can be drawn. I think we will know money once we get through REA, LOTG, Heritage and ML

Nice upgrade Ryan.
Good to see some prices on other mid grade collector stuff come down a bit.

Seems like it. Steep drop on that '15 PSA 3 Joe Jackson from prior sale. The M101 also went down about 60k from that same card's last sale.

I could be mistaken but the M101 Ruth went up. With BP the card went for $440k which I thought was 20k more than last time. But overall the Ruth’s and Jackson’s were softer than I thought and many who said the prices seems to be softening (at least based on this auction were correct.

The next market test is REA with a week to go. Then Love of Games the Week after, and so on.

Might just be Auction Fatigue with so many auctions in such a short time.

This is accurate. It went up $27,471 from its previous sale in December 2021.

I'll play devils advocate here on the Psa 3 1915 CJ Jackson.

The example which sold for considerably more just 4 months ago was much nicer.

The deep long crease which extends from the left border through Jax's hands and jersey on the copy last night was a real eye sore. At least it was for me! And what is that blemish on his face??

If I were in the market for one the crease alone would have kept me from bidding on this card. Just my two cents.

$428k for an off center blank back M101-4 Ruth tells me all is well in the Ruth market. I find the Gimbels Jackson interesting. Amongst ad backs, Gimbels is one of the more common for Jackson. I wonder what a rare Jackson ad back would have sold for. More generally, I view the M101-4/5's as sets that are just starting to come into their own. Just like T206s, I see M101-4/5 rare front back combinations exploding in value. It's such a great set with not just the Ruth rookie but a fantastic representation of other HOFers and stars. Backs such as Mail Theatre, Everybody's, Block & Kuhl, Wares, Holmes to Homes, Successful Farming and some Gimbels straight letter variations are incredibly rare and have yet to be valued appropriately. Plus, I love the actual photographic images rather than lithographs.

The large cease and face imperfection certainly got me as well.

You are not mistaken - the Ruth M101 $440K sale is an increase and, to the best of my knowledge, a record price for a “3-VG” example in any public auction. Ruth is ultra-strong, and his high-end/scarce pre-1930 cards continue to fetch extremely strong pricing. For example, a PSA 1 1917 Collins McCarthy Ruth just sold for $114K in Huggins & Scott. No fatigue on rare Ruth’s.

Agreed, Jay. We talk about it all the time. Only upside for these cards under appreciated for many years. Don't forget the short prints pulled early for various interesting reasons..

Thanks Leon

Just tougher to add to the collection at these prices but the mission goes on

At National the MHCC rep predicted 450. I think this was a great deal.

I do not know about it going for 450K that might just be the auction house trying to hype it up.

But I do agree I believe you got it for a great price.

Congrats on the potential deal of the day

I anticipated the e121 ball in hand Ruth to go a bit higher as well it is a very quality copy for the grade but it still certainly went at a fair price.
