Nice piece Adam.

Excellent article, Adam. Thanks for posting it here because I quit reading SCD when the editor wrote that he'd never seen a T206.

Tao_Moko 01-30-2021 01:28 PM

Good read

Adam's article appears on Sports Collectors Daily--not in Sports Collectors Digest (the magazine). The two aren't related.

My mistake. Thanks for the clarification.

Heh, I didn't know the Digest still existed...

The first American Jack Johnson card might also be the E75. As far as I can tell no one has a very good sense of when specifically this set was issued, though it is often referred to as 1909 (PSA now says 1910, SGC says 1909, I think 1908-1910 is the only timeframe that can really be given). Admittedly it is a much uglier card than the British Ogdens that came before or the playing card.

1909 Ogden’s

I’m not sure how many followed it, but a Jack Johnson 1909 Ogden’s sold for 953.50 tonight on Ebay. It’s good to see at least some of the European boxing cards doing well.

Great article, Adam. At one time I tried collecting cards of the heavyweight champs that held the title during my lifetime (since 1952) but I gave that up. I changed focus to collect either a magazine cover or original wirefoto of each of them, at least through the 80s when my boxing interest died.

I'd be interested to know if you dug up anything on career contemporary cards of Sonny Liston.

The first Sonny Liston card is Swedish. It was on the front cover of the Rekord magazine, like the 1962 Clay. He does have a few cards from the run and the most common by far is a 1962. There is a 1959 too. I don't recall (my list is at the office) whether there is an even earlier one as well.

That was in line with recent sales of graded cards as well. A PSA 3 sold for $700 in mid-January. I would expect a PSA 3 to top $1,000 now.

Prices have been way up on the major names lately and not just the usual heavies. Duran and Pacquiao RCs got some serious respect. I'm real tempted to cash in some of mine. I haven't seen an uncut sheet of Hemmets with Clay or Pacquiao sell lately, so putting mine out there is intriguing.

Adam -

Have the the Kayo cards and other recent boxing cards increased in value like the other (same era) sports cards ?

Thx.

Yes. Roy Jones in particular if you can pull a 10. Market has become very fluid with some very weird stuff lately.

Kicking myself for selling a bunch of stuff less then a month ago...........but that's how it goes sometimes.

Unopened boxes from the junk wax era have dried up. Used to be able to find case quantities dirt cheap.

I think the fun has finally penetrated the boxing market beyond the Tyson and Ali RCs. My sales on other cards have been strong. Early Clay/Ali is hot right now and Louis hasn't been too shabby either. Johnson cards are always popular but have taken off lately. Also seen some stronger demand and pricing on HOF RCs like Duran, Foreman, etc.

The Johnson T227 currently at auction with REA is already over $3,800 with the BP.

Adam,

While I'm not a collector of Boxing cards, I always enjoy reading your pieces on them. Great job, as always.
