Bob Probert vs Marty McSorely, 1994

For a fun trip down memory lane, I recently bought a set of early 90s UD hockey from a fella here on the forum (Thanks, Fred). While sorting through them, I came across these guys and remembered watching this epic fight from when I was a kid. What's great is that Mickey Redmond still does the color commentary on current Redwings broadcasts, love that guy.

Anyway, this was a time in the league when the enforcers were pertinent to their teams. Yzerman and Federov and Lemieux and Jagr were able to do a lot of what they did because of the presence of these two guys. And what I love about their fight, is the respect they show each other at the conclusion. Anyway, I wanted to share one of my old hockey memories that was jogged by this set.

All time records for most PIM in a season, these boys both broke into the top 10. Ha!

Was all part of the game back then. If you didn't have an enforcer or 2 your stars couldn't shine. Simple as that.

IIRC, McSorley, and the fact his sweater always came off easily (intentionally done for obvious reasons) was the reason the rule changed in that regard?

My most memorable fight of McSorley was when Wendel Clark gave it to him pretty good for his cheap shot on Doug Gilmour.

Pound for pound I don't think anyone was tougher than Clark. Joey Kocur was a tough customer and maybe just as tough but since Clark and him were cousins, they never fought.

That's before my time. The best fight I saw in person was the Billings Bulls vs Great Falls or Butte. Billings hadn't had a team for 10+ years due to aggravated conflict between fans. Something about throwing rocks as a visiting bus was attempting to leave. Andy Moog played for Billings once on the original team. Anyway, in the early 90s Two young bucks were taken off the ice and sent in the penalty box. The separating glass wasn't high enough and one of the boys jumped the glass and continued the fight in the box. It was eye opening to an 7yo.
