Question for you photo experts - what have I got?

Naturally, being a big Joe D fan, I was thrilled to pick up these photos the other day. I have only ever seen one other pic of Joe wearing number 18, his national chicle card.

I normally collect bats, so I have no idea how to tell what these actually are. I am guessing some kind of wire photo or something? I say that because, although the image "feels" old, I can see that the picture is made from little vertical lines.

There is no writing on the back except that the sequence of six photos is numbered. 5 1/2" by 5 1/2", but they all look like they were hand cut, so I have no idea what the original size would have been.

What do the experts think please?

Thanks,
Sean

Yeah, looks like a sequential series of wire photos. Based on the sizes, they were probably originally two to a panel, and the front caption has been trimmed off.

Cool. Thank you!

Is there a way to tell if it is from the period, or from later on?

Without having them in hand, I'd guess they were of the era. Wire photos from the mid to late 30's usually had a sepia type tint to them, were generally of higher print quality with tighter and less distracting lines then those that came after that period, and often ran between 11" and 11 1/2" inches long/wide, which kind of jives with the size of these shots.

If I were to hypothesize, I'd guess they were separated as they are because they were originally laid out in the wrong order, if you follow his swing all the way through.

Thank you!

Most likely vintage, and most wirephotos are.

Also, if each is sequentially numbered on back, they were likely cut by the newspaper or magazine editor or printer.
