1952 Topps Mickey Mantle

I've been watching the 1952 Topps Mantle cards with great interest these days as I was lucky enough to pick a nice example up recently for my set. What do people think about the Mantle in the days, weeks and years to come? Will it depreciate, level off or continue to rise in value? Can it continue to sustain higher and higher prices (even in low grade) like it has as of late? Seems to be one of a few posterboard cards of the hobby even though it's a postwar card. Opinions?...

I think it will level off at some point but I don’t think it will ever come down to where it was a year or two ago. My dream of saving 25k for a decent looking PSA1 seems to be long gone.

Shouldn't you post a pic first? Should be a rule around here all those with a 52 Mick have to post a pic once a month...lol.

I can remember passing on PSA 1's for $1800 because I figured I would buy a better one eventually. I also remember EVERYONE saying every couple years this card will cool off, flatten out...can't really go any higher...etc etc...and all it has done is surprise everyone all the freakin time. I have no idea where it will stop but I think to say it will level off will get chuckles from someone reading these posts in 5 years...and if you search this site it's FULL of posts that we can chuckle about now.

Wishful thinking on my behalf I guess, John. I have visions of 30 years into the future when I’ve completed my 1952 - present day Topps run, all except for 1 card of that kid from Oklahoma that I can never obtain. Although I guess if it all works out at that point I’d be able to sell some 50s and 60s sets to raise the funds to buy the Mantle. And then start over again on those sets that I’d have sold. I love collecting!

Passed on psa 3 at 7500. That was too much.

I guess I'm just out of the loop

Unless the people.buying have to sell, I see it leveling iff

level off , stay around the same for a while, then go up again

When I bought a PSA1 for $1000 my wife said I was crazy.
Even though I'm older now I still occasionally pull it out and show it to her.

Cmvorce 04-01-2021 11:45 PM

Riggs, what year did you buy the PSA 1 for $1000?!

My opinion is that the 1952 Topps Mantle is way overpriced. There are too many of them available to sustain the current price.

Full disclosure - that has been my unfortunate opinion for the last 30 to 35 years. Which is why, as I sit here with over 500 Mantle items in my collection, I do so without the '52 Topps Mantle and with no hopes of ever getting one now.

This is how I feel about 2011 Topps Update Trout. But, it never falls in price!

I think anyone who does not have a 52 Mantle thinks it is overpriced and is patiently waiting for the price to come down. Being a variant collector I needed two of them

dio 04-02-2021 07:54 AM

For things that are not overprice, it means no one wants them.

I bought mine back in 2013...after missing out on several 3's @7500...i was fortunate to land this centered one, despite the scruffing..and no signs of the MK (pencing writing on the top border)--I LOVE IT!!!!

The nice looking ones in any grade will always appreciate in value over time.
