1951 Bowman the unofficial ranking

Ok so I've been curious about the what are considered the best cards in the 1951 Bowman set. The top 3 and 4 seems obvious. It's more so after that . With a ton of star power and high numbers along with iconic images it makes it difficult to decide imo.

So what I'm asking is what do you think the top ten cards. You can list the highest value , you can list you personal favorites , or you can skip the first four
Which I would believe to be mantle , mays, ford, Williams. I'm asking because
I want to get all the hofers rookies from the set. Minus the mantle because it is out of reach for me .

I'm not gonna bother with a top 10, but any list should include the Campanella. What a fantastic looking card!

Mantle
Mays
Ford
Williams
Berra
Campanella
Snider
Feller
Irvin
Fox
Spahn

I think the Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca cards from this set make a nice combination. I have them next to each other in my display.

Rookiemonster 08-10-2016 06:47 PM

Dan,I absolutely love the Campanella from the set!
Imo it's his best looking card as most of his cards are heads shots.
I personally prefer action photos .

Rats, great list I hope to some more top tens !

Andy, the Thompson is sweet I like cards with great background images .

Since a lot of the pictures on the 1951 Bowman set are just larger versions of the 1950 cards, I've always felt a little cheated by the set.

Its funny because for me I went after the the ford rookie and mays rookie first. Both of these card are not in the 1950 set . I know the Campanella is a different picture as well and a better image . But for the most part it seems like a lot of laziness on the behalf of the Bowman company.

DBesse27 08-11-2016 10:40 PM

Neal, your copy of that card is off the charts!!

Bob' Collection

Having seen it up close and personal, and having had to stack some of it, walk over and around parts of it, and dig some of it out of boxes....I agree Irv. Best post war collection I have ever seen.

skelly 08-12-2016 08:15 AM

I would include the Piersall Rookie in a top ten.

Rookiemonster 08-12-2016 09:10 AM

Bob f with a bomb !

Wow ! That's one way to make a top ten lol.

Wow - 15 posts in and Im the first to mention it.

The Larry Doby IS my favorite post-war card of ANY. Campanella, Rizzuto and Snider deserve mention as well.

It was probably next on my list.

It's OK, if you like that sort of thing.

Hi Bob! :)

In all seriousness, that's a great top 10. I would maybe replace Ashburn with either Doby or Preacher Roe.

You're a lucky man, Al. I imagine, I would be pretty much tongue tied/frozen in awe if I was you! :D

LOL.

I am also still getting use to it but I love it so far compared to what I previously had.

Not sure if it's Windows 10 or your printer/scanner settings but my scans/pics don't turn out as large as your's?

These scans were taken with both my old and new computer but both with the same printer/scanner.

I think this set is so awesome and would love to collect it. However, the Mantle scares me off. I am not sure I could ever afford one in the condition that would satisfy me. So I just admire from afar.

Just looking at the Nuxhall I posted, I can't remember if this is the size they always looked or if they are somewhat larger now?

I know, Leon's site automatically re-adjusts picture/scan size but now I can't help but wonder, with the latest tweeks the site has received, if the pics are now larger?

I reduced my Nuxhall manually (below) to see if anything changed?

Edit: Yep, much smaller.

I right clicked on my pic and then chose edit. Went to resize and chose 50 instead of a 100 and then saved the pic. If that helps you?

It is a cell phone picture. My hate of Windows 10 has to do with it runs way slower than the Windows 7 Professional I had. That and I don't know how to use/find everything yet. I found editing pictures way easier before.:)

I am in the same boat. I just couldn't justify the insane price of some of the cards in the set.

Unlike a lot of people I am very happy with nice reprint sets of the vintage Bowman sets.

I edited my post above and explained how I made my Nuxhall pic smaller.

Not sure if that will also work with you and phone pics, but it might be worth a shot?
