Show your favorite ERROR card(s)....my 2 are MAGIE & Magee (a.k.a. Bris Lord)

These two ERROR cards are the favorites in my collection....since they are mistakes by design (and, not the usual printing process flaws).

T206 MAGIE

As is well-known, the T206 MAGIE was printed ONLY with a PIEDMONT 150 back. PIEDMONT tobacco was the American Tobacco Company's "flagship" brand
in the early 1900's. ATC produced and sold considerably more Piedmont cigarettes than any of their other 15 tobacco brands during 1909-1911. Correspond-
ingly, the American Lithographic Co. printed significantly more T206's with PIEDMONT backs than any other T-brand.

My theory (circa 2005) suggests that American Litho started their initial press runs by printing PIEDMONT 150 backs on their first series of T206's. And, the
MAGIE error card reinforces this "PIEDMONT-first" hypothesis. Furthermore, there are 4 more T206 subjects with PIEDMONT backs that support this theory.

E104-1 Bris Lord **

Call it serendipity.....I find it very interesting that Sherry Magee is also the subject of my 2nd favorite ERROR card. This E104-1 (late 1910) card of Bris Lord
actually pictures Magee's portrait (in reverse).

Bristol Lord was a favorite of Connie Mack....but, otherwise not too well known a ballplayer. However, Bris was involved in one of BB's more ridiculous trades.
So, what trade am I alluding to ?

Perhaps, this trade is even more bizarre than the Mets trading Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi.

OK, there are certainly many other vintage printing errors. So, how's about showing and telling us of your favorite interesting (or unusual) error card(s).

I had a feeling you would chime in on this one.

It is somewhat puzzling that someone as astute a scout as Manager Mack was, that he didn't forsee the potential in Joe Jackson.

But we know that Connie Mack preferred College educated players, so Joe Jax did not fit in with the A's....so, he was expendable.

Spelling 101

1 Attachment(s)
I have always liked a couple of typographical error cards in my collection. The E220 National Caramel card of Jim Bagby has his name spelled Bagbyk, which certainly is different from the typical spelling mistake...not sure how this one got past quality control.

The other two cards pictured are Zeenuts of George Wisterzil. I like the fact that he had four Zeenuts issued (1918, 1919, 1920 and 1922), and his name is spelled three different ways--Wisterzill, Westerzil, and Westersil--none of which are correct.

Hey Barry
They are once removed from a very original collection from CA., and were found at th bottom of a box with a bunch of super scarce cards including 2 E100-2 Weavers and 10 or so other E100-2s. They walked into a show and up to the Beckett table and had them grade and sell them. This was the only two like them but some others were sold on ebay and also consigned to REA. I honestly think they are from a family that might have had ties to the production of the Bishops cards. My guess is that they are scraps of pre-production cards. They probably weren't cut from an ad piece because of their lack of color.

barrysloate 09-27-2012 07:10 AM

Pre-production pieces sounds about right because they look more than one step away from being ready for market.... I like them.:)

Wow, some really nice errors!

Ron, I have a similar Kleinow although I've often questioned whether these have faded over time due to sunlight and or chemical tampering based on feedback from some members. Both cards are now in SGC10 holders.

Brian, I believe that the spelling Westerzil is correct. I have four different sources from his Wichita days that all spell it this way. I didn't include a program that spells it this way too.

Not to be a wet blanket, but aren't miscut or cards with color differentiation not considered an ERROR?

Patrick

The original intent of this thread (starting with my MAGIE & BRIS LORD/Magee cards) is exactly as you suggest.....true ERROR's.
However, so far, most posts here are of ''printing process flaws". Not designs mistakes.

And, that's all fine, too.

I'm looking for any type of errors in printing; and, especially errors by design. Such as your T205 Hoblitzell.

I once had the rare T205 Hoblitzell (no stats).....sold it.

Thanks for posting.

Hi Doug

It looks like your BLUE Aaron missed the Yellow ink printing. So, we can wonder if that card was meant to be a "Yellow Letters" variation ?

I guess there is no way of knowing.

Thanks for posting your 1958 Aaron's.

PSA, before I removed it from the tomb, had it listed as having a "white name".

Error by design and color printing error

The #240 card in the 1949 BOWMAN set depicts Bobby Young (a St Louis Cardinals rookie in 1948). But, the name and the bio is that of veteran ballplayer
Norman "Babe" Young, who played with the Cardinals for the 1948 season. In 1949, Young was invited by the Yankees to Spring training. He injured his leg
during Spring training and retired.

Sometimes printing errors tell us things......

For instance the info on the mis-cut back of this tough T205 of Eddie Collins confirms that this card
was Double-Printed on its sheet.
