Beckett Vintage Collector Magazine

Anyone have any opinions on the Beckett Vintage Collector Magazine ? Looking for something to subscribe too ? Any recommendations now that "Old Cardboard" is not publishing ? Use to subscribe to SCD for years, but that was years ago ?

It is worth the subscription. There seems to be at least an article or two in every issue that makes them worthwhile. Board member, Jerry Spillman, has written several good articles recently.

I rarely see it at my local Barnes and noble but every time I’ve picked one up it’s been a fun read.

I buy it every time it comes out, usually as pointed put before there are one or two good articles in each issue.

I will say this though, the quality of both articles and writing has tailed off in the last year. There are many spelling errors in each issue and the depth of the articles has declined. I am hoping it is just a bad stretch and they will make a comeback on quality.

I re-started my subscription to SCD a year or so ago. There are usually some decent, interesting articles, and the cost is low. It is worthwhile to me.

I also agree with the poster above about the Beckett Vintage. Jerry's articles on PC760 Rose Co. postcards and W600 Sporting Life cabinets are both worth the price of admission. Lots of other great articles over the years too- the one on the Bond Bread Jackie Robinson cards comes to mind.

Thank you Kevin.

The Vintage Collector is published quarterly and generally contains about 100 pages. Although it favors baseball, it also contains football, basketball, and hockey articles. The last several pages of each issue are allocated for individual picture price guides for baseball, football, basketball and hockey.

A recent article in the VC covers a most complete story with well supplied full page pictures and details of each of the "Eight Men Out". Added is a complete coverage, with pictures of the cards issued, of each player.

In the latest issue "Printing The Monster" illustrates the original American Lithographic Co. Machines that produced the T206 cards. It explains the logistics of compiling player’s names, getting their permission and their pictures for so great a number in early 1900s. A detailed explanation of the chromolithographic process and the engineering required for the registration and layering of colored ink to combine to create each image. Card sheets were passed through six times for the different colors and each kept in perfect alignment. Determining the order of ink color sequence, the reasons for errors in printing and ghost cards are presented in detail.

Finally the magazine page designers do a fantastic job of creating eye-appealing artwork to introduce the theme of each article.
